Romantic Paintings

ROMANTIC STYLE

In emphasizing emotion and imagination, romantic art shifted away from the restraint of classicism and neoclassicism that had dominated art in Europe since the Renaissance. Romanticism achieved its greatest popularity in art, literature, music and philosophy between 1780 and 1830, although its expression of individual experiences ranging from awe to passion informed culture in the decades after.

Landscape painting was especially popular during the romantic period, as were nature studies of wild animals and fantasies of exotic lands. Romanticism varied across Europe as it reacted to the rise of industrialization, a more personal relationship with faith that was distanced from the church and the rationalist thinking of the Enlightenment.

British painters such as John Constable and J.M.W. Turner responded dramatically to the light and atmosphere of the natural world, while William Blake conveyed humanity’s connection to the divine in his visionary art. In Germany, the late-18th-century Sturm und Drang, or Storm and Drive, movement, with its probing of the unconscious, inspired a sense of mystery in work by romantic artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge. In France, where the French Revolution had turned tradition upside down, Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix used lush brushwork to paint monumental canvases with tumultuous scenes of nature and history.

The romantic movement and its subject matter were a significant influence on the Pre-Raphaelites, Symbolists and the American painters of the Hudson River School, as well as on other cultural movements in the 19th and 20th centuries that saw artists build on this perspective in which art was guided by emotion rather than reason.

Orientalist Oil Painting of Damascus Gate in Jerusalem by Macco

By Georg Macco

Located in London, GB

Orientalist oil painting of Damascus Gate in Jerusalem by Macco German, Early 20th Century Frame: Height 66cm, width 84cm. depth 8cm Canvas: Height 42cm, width 59cm Imagined and brought to life by German artist and illustrator, Georg Macco (1863-1933), this captivating Orientalist oil-on-canvas painting showcases the vibrant scene at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem. Depicting a bustling thoroughfare, the canvas is alive with the energy of traders and their vibrant market stalls lining either side of the street. Amidst this animated marketplace are animals like goats and chickens, adding a further layer of authenticity to the scene, and showcasing the artist’s masterful range. A focal point is an elderly man, clad in warm shades of brown and beige, complemented by a vivid head scarf, as he ambles towards the viewer. Adjacent to him, a woman is immersed in a negotiation with a market vendor for an array of fruits and vegetables. Further in the backdrop, a colourful assemblage of individuals can be seen, swathed in a rainbow palette of red, yellow, brown, and blue. Their activities range from strolling towards the viewer, moving into the distance, or engaged in lively discussions. The painting's left side offers a more serene ambiance, with fewer market stalls and people. It features a female figure seated beside a stack of brown bags...

Mid Century Spanish Romantic Couple Mantilla Portrait Figurative Oil

By Jose Puyet

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Mid Century Spanish Romantic Couple Mantilla Portrait Figurative Oil Artist: José Puyet Padilla Title: Majos Medium: Oil on canvas Period: Mid-20th century Dimensions: 51 × 72 cm (20 × 28.3 in) Signature: Signed lower right Inscription: Titled Majo on the reverse Frame: Unframed Condition: Very good overall condition. Stable pictorial surface with visible expressive brushwork consistent with the artist’s technique DESCRIPTION Elegant Mid-Century figurative composition by José Puyet Padilla depicting a romantic Spanish couple in close interaction, rendered with the artist’s characteristic expressive brushwork and atmospheric palette. The female figure, wrapped in a luminous white mantilla, leans gently toward her companion in an intimate gesture that recalls the refined tradition of Spanish costumbrista portraiture reinterpreted through a modern painterly language. The soft transitions of light across the veil contrast with the deep reds and greens of the surrounding composition, creating a strong visual balance typical of Puyet’s mature style. The painting demonstrates the artist’s distinctive handling of facial modeling and fabric textures, especially visible in the treatment of the mantilla and the subtle tonal structure of the background. Works of this type belong to the elegant figurative tradition of Mid-Century Spanish painting, where portraiture and social atmosphere merge into decorative compositions particularly appreciated in international interiors. A refined example of José Puyet’s romantic Spanish figuration with strong decorative presence and collector appeal. ARTIST BIO José Puyet Padilla (1922–2004) was a Spanish painter known for his refined portraits and elegant figurative compositions inspired by Spanish cultural themes and society imagery. Trained under the influence of his grandfather, painter José Padilla, he developed an internationally recognized career with exhibitions in Spain, the United States, Canada, Germany and Italy. His work combines expressive brushwork with a luminous palette and a distinctive interpretation of traditional Spanish subjects. In 1988 he was elected member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Telmo in Málaga. His paintings are held in numerous private collections in Europe and North America. ARTISTIC CONTEXT / INSPIRATION This painting belongs to the tradition of modern Spanish figurative portraiture that revisits historical costume and romantic themes through a painterly Mid-Century language. Comparable decorative and atmospheric resonances can be found in the society portrait tradition of Ignacio Zuloaga, the expressive elegance of Ricardo Macarrón, and the refined figurative interpretations of Spanish identity developed by 20th-century portrait painters working between Madrid and Andalusia. The mantilla motif remains one of the most recognizable visual symbols of Spanish portraiture and continues to hold strong appeal among collectors of European figurative painting. jose puyet painting spanish romantic painting mantilla portrait painting mid century spanish painting spanish figurative oil romantic couple painting...

L. Franssen Mother and child with a rose Oil on wood, 44,5 x 33,5 cm signed The artist of this outstanding painting is completely unknown so far. There is no entry under "L. Franssen" in any encyclopaedia or reference work. There was a Dutch artist, Jan Fransen (1604/5 - ca. 1646), who was mainly based in Amsterdam. According to Thieme/Becker, he created numerous paintings with biblical depictions, study heads and still lifes. However, it could also have been Jan Franssen or Frantzen, who was not born until 1644 but was also active in Amsterdam. However, no confirmed works by either artist are known. Just as interesting as the attribution is the depiction: a young woman holds her child on her lap while she prepares a meal on a hob. At the same time she holds a rose in her hand. Most likely, Mary is depicted here with the young Jesus...

Romantic Pastel on paper “Aristocratic Portrait”, Signed Edmond Jewrin

Located in Valladolid, ES

A refined and unique portrait of a young noblewoman or aristocrat, executed in pastel on paper, signed by Edmond Jewrin and dated 1843. She is depicted in three-quarter view, seated in an armchair, with an innocent expression, her head slightly inclined to the left, looking directly at the viewer. She wears a beautiful white lace dress with bare shoulders, her arms resting in her lap. The leaf headdress is not merely an aesthetic embellishment, but rather part of the coded language of fashion and Romanticism of the period, symbolizing fidelity, marriage, and unwavering affection. Furthermore, during the 1840s and 1850s, there was a strong influence of classical mythology on formal court hairstyles. Adorning the hair with garlands of leaves (in the style of a laurel wreath or Bacchus wreath) evoked nymphs and goddesses of nature, projecting an image of purity, youth, and connection with nature. Despite the neutral, flat background in pastel blue, the artist manages to create space using a careful and precise technique, which meticulously captures the sitter's sweet facial features. It follows in the footsteps of the great 19th-century portrait painters of the Central European school, such as Franz Xaver Winterhalter. It retains its original oval, gilded wooden frame, protected by glass. The 19th century has sometimes been called "The Century of the Portrait." From its very inception, portraiture was associated with figures of economic, social, or political power who wished to display and perpetuate their influence, but it experienced its golden age during this century, especially in the last third, as it became a coveted form of distinction among those who could afford it. It extended to all kinds of techniques: painting, sculpture, medal making, miniatures, watercolor, drawing, etching, lithography, photography… Moreover, the influence of photography and the arts' growing move towards realism led to increasingly naturalistic depictions of effigies. A magnificent work that visually enriches any setting, adding distinction and historical narrative. Technical Data Technique on support: Pastel on paper Author: Signed Edmond Jewrin, Central European School Title of the work: “Female Portrait” Year: 1843 Good condition for its age and use. Head Study

Located in London, GB

Joseph-Auguste Rousselin French 1841 - 1916 Head Study Oil on board, signed with initials and signed verso Image size: 12 x 11 inches This head study provides an unbelievably moving portrait of an androgynous sitter. Employing incredible technique, the artist has achieved the highly finished porcelain skin, thoughtful eyes and pink lips of the sitter with incredible softness. The unfinished quality of the background make the composition of the work particularly satisfying to the modern eye. Loosely sketched dashes and brushy swoops outline the model's head. The mix of finished and more expressive elements reveals the artist's brilliant eye, technique and personality. Artistically, Rousselin does not seem to be influenced by the friendships that he forged with the Impressionists but rather he has remained rather faithful to the academic technique of William Bouguereau, whose studio he also used to frequent. This study is certainly comparable to the work by Bouguereau, specifically his graceful portraits of women. Bouguereau championed the traditional academic style and his methods were taught to him by a pupil of Ingres. Similar academic inspiration is apparent in this work, from the conscious posing of the subject to the evenly laid colours. Indeed, alike the work of Bouguereau this follows the same classical approach to composition, form and subject matter. The Artist Born in Paris in 1841, Rousselin grew up to be a French painter and art collector. From a young age he studied in the workshops of Charles Gleyre and Thomas Couture, here he met the young impressionist generation. His studio peers included Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Édouard Manet, with whom he forged strong bonds of friendship. It was at his invitation that his two friends Renoir and Sisley exhibited at the Salon of the Society of Friends of the Arts in Pau, a region where Rousselin had family ties. Manet invited him to his family home in Boulogne-sur-Mer where he had him pose in the summer of 1868 for 'Le Déjeuner dans l'Atelie'. Rousselin can be seen in the background of the painting as the man with the cigar, wearing a grey hat...
