Antique Scottish Highland Loch landscape, with sunlit streaming onto the water
Located in Woodbury, CT
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolor of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolors have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolors are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of oils. Jamieson is known to have traveled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'. - Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at the usual sites. Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc. You may also find some listings under his various pseudonyms of Arnould Pienne, Charles Maurice, Graham Williams...

Coastal Landscape - British Victorian art marine oil painting France boats
Located in London, GB
This lovely British Victorian coastal oil painting is by noted artist Thomas Eyre Macklin. It was painted in 1882 and the location is France. The composition is fisherman in the foreground around upturned boats on grass. A couple of ladies are sat on the grass over looking the sea, one with a sun umbrella. Beyond is the sea or harbour with buildings, including one with a French flag, on the land across the water and the cliffs of the headland. The detail and brushwork are superb as are the vibrant greens of the grass and red roofs. This is a lovely 19th century figurative coastal landscape and an excellent example of Macklin's work. Signed Thomas Eyre Macklin and dated (18)82 lower left. Provenance. Sussex collection. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 21 inches by 11 inches. In good condition. Housed in a gilt gallery frame which compliments the picture, 25 inches by 15 inches framed and In good condition. Thomas Eyre Macklin RBA (1863-1943) was a British painter in oils and watercolour, illustrator, sculptor and designer of monuments, who signed his works T. Eyre Macklin or T.E. Macklin. After a promising career at various art schools, including the Royal Academy, in the late 19th century Macklin produced Romantic black-and-white illustrations for books, numerous landscapes, figurative paintings and civic portraits, all of which came to the attention of local newspapers in his native Newcastle upon Tyne. In the 20th century he concentrated on Art Deco monuments and other sculpture, his best-known works being the South African War Memorial in Newcastle, the Bangor Memorial, County Down, and the Land Wars Memorial at Auckland, New Zealand. According to Macklin, his ancestors were from County Donegal. He was the son of John Eyre Macklin, a soldier, journalist and landscape painter; both were Newcastle-born. Macklin married writer Alice Martha Alys Philpott and they had one child, but she later petitioned for divorce on the grounds of infidelity. He had bouts of illness during later life and died in Devon in 1943. Encouraged by his father, Macklin showed a remarkable aptitude for drawing from childhood, and devoted himself to art from the age of ten, being one of W. Cosens Way's students at the Newcastle School of Art, where he was one of the most successful pupils ... On one occasion he carried off the four head prizes of the year. Macklin was selling his pictures by the age of thirtee. In 1884 he moved from Newcastle to London to sketch antiques at the British Museum, and trained at Calderon's Art School until c.1887. After that, he studied at John Dawson Watson...

Cattle Watering in a Landscape - British 19th century art Victorian oil painting
Located in London, GB
This lovely British Victorian landscape oil painting is attributed to noted artist Sam Bough. It was painted circa 1855 after Bough had moved to Hamilton Lanarkshire in Scotland to focus on painting landscapes along side fellow artist Alexander Frazer. The composition is several cattle watering in a stream under the boughs of an ancient tree. There is superb impasto, for example on the clouds and this is a charming 19th century oil painting. Provenance. London estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 29 inches by 16 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt Victorian frame, 36 inches by 23 inches framed and in good condition. Samuel Bough RSA (1822–1878) was an English-born landscape painter who spent much of his career working in Scotland. He was born the third of five children in Abbey Street, Carlisle in northern England, the son of James Bough (1794-1845), a shoemaker, and Lucy Walker, a cook. He was raised in relative poverty, but with a keen encouragement in the arts. He was self-taught but mixed with local artists such as Richard Harrington and George Sheffield, and was strongly influenced by the work of Turner. After an unsuccessful attempt to live as an artist in Carlisle he obtained a job and as a theatre scenery painter in Manchester in 1845, later also working in Glasgow in the same role. Encouraged by Daniel Macnee to take up landscape painting he moved to Hamilton from 1851-4 and worked there with Alexander Fraser. In 1854 he moved to Port Glasgow to work on his technique of painting ships and harbours. His paintings were noted for their sensitivity to atmosphere and light, were often of cloudy shorelines and busy harbours. He also began supplementing his income by illustrating books, before moving to Edinburgh in 1855. On coming to Edinburgh he lived in a terraced house at 5 Malta Terrace in the Stockbridge area of the city. Following Turner's example, he became a skilful painter of seaports. He was buried in Dean Cemetery Edinburgh on 23 November 1878. The grave bears a bronze medallion of his head by William Brodie...

19th Century genre oil painting of a soldier collecting his daughter from school
Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Andre-Henri Dargelas French, (1828-1906) Villa du Connetable, Ecouen Oil on panel, signed Image size: 21.75 inches x 17.5 inches Size including frame: 28.5 inches x 24.25 inches Provenance: Alexander Gallery, Bristol A finely painted genre scene depicting a soldier collecting his daughter from school at the Villa Du Connétable in Ecouen. The soldier, wearing his order of the légion d'honneur, walks with his daughter past a boy with dogs as other parents and school children follow behind. The ‘Villa Du Connétable’ or The Constable’s Villa was the local name for the historic Château d'Écouen. Dargelas lived at Ecouen so would have known the building and area well. Originally a fortress inherited by Anne de Montmorency, the Grand Constable and Commander of the French Army, it was rebuilt by him as a much grander property in 1539. It remained in the Montmorency family until 1632 when it passed to the Bourbon-Conde family. Like many estates owned by the aristocracy, it was confiscated by the state during the French Revolution. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte gave it to the Legion d’Honneur and it became a school for the daughters of the chevaliers of the order. Although it was returned to the Conde family after the restoration of Louis XVII, it was re-established as a school for the Legion d’Honneur in 1850 by Napoleon II. In 1862, the château was declared a Monument historique. It remained as a school until 1962 and in 1969 become the home of the collection of Renaissance art of the Cluny Museum. It opened as the French National Museum of the Renaissance in 1977. Andre-Henri Dargelas was a genre painter born in Bordeaux, France on 11 October, 1828 to Jean Baptiste Dargelas and Jeanne Virginie Mimandre. In 1854, he left his home to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he became a pupil of François Edouard Picot (1786-1868). He lived at 49, Rue d’Hauteville, from where he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1857. He continued to exhibit at the Salon over the years, receiving a number of medals and honourable mentions. At some point during the early 1860’s, Dargelas moved to Sarcelles, a commune in Northern Paris. By this time, he had begun specialising in paintings of children in a naturalistic style at play. Many of his paintings featured school children, with some set outside against architectural backdrops, such as this fine example. His paintings proved highly popular with collectors in Paris as well as in London and New York. On 10 February 1866, he married Catherine Etienne Gabrielle Duverger. His wife was the daughter of the artist Théophile Emmanuel Duverger...

This superb French Victorian portrait oil painting is by noted French society painter Jules-Elie Delaunay. Painted in 1883 it is a three-quarter length profile portrait of the Marquesa de Escombreras. Her full name was Trinidad Maria Piedad Fulgenico de Aguirre. On October 22nd 1843 she married Frenchman Hilarion Roux (1819-1898) who was a banker from Marseille who settled in Cartegena in January 1843. After her marriage she was known as Trinidad Roux. The couple later lived in France again, in Marseille and later in Paris, where Trinidad died in 1905 aged 81. Interestingly there is no similar portrait of her husband.
