Wonderful French period copy of the famous painting by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille, which the original is now in a museum in Paris. This piece came from a private collection in New Jersey where it had been since it was purchased in France back in the 1950s. The previous owner was an Art dealer in NYC during the 1950s-70s and she kept some of her favorite paintings, this being one of them. The piece was re-framed in the 1990s In 35 years of dealing in paintings, I have never seen another example of this scene, it is very rare.! This is a stunning painting of a racehorse signed and dated J F Herring Sen 1842. The horse is named above the water trough as Attilla. As Herring was a renowned painter of racehorses it is likely that this was done for a wealthy patron who owned several. Although he painted many of the winners of the St. Ledger Cup Attilla was not one of these. He then worked as a stable boy and coachman in Yorkshire until with the help of patrons he was able to study with Abraham Cooper RA, the only art education he appears to have had. He specialised in racing subjects and his few hunting scenes are rare. Herring painted the start of the 1844 Derby, which became known as ‘the dirtiest Derby in history’. He sometimes collaborated with his three sons, J.F.Jnr, Benjamin Jnr and Charles. He also collaborated with James Pollard on a number of racing scenes inc. ‘The Doncaster Gold Cup’, 1838, ‘The Emperor of Russia’s Cup at Ascot’ 1845 and ‘The Dead Heat for the Doncaster Great St. Ledger’ 1849 Herring painted 33 successive winners of the St. Ledger and not surprisingly lived a large part of his life in the Doncaster area before settling in Newmarket in 1830 and then in London in 1835. James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician. William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture, and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898.
