"Napoli 1889", Framed Oil Painting on Wood Panel, Neapolitan Harbor

Located in Genève, GE

Dimensions with frame: 25 x 31 x 4,5 cm Signed "Buono Napoli 1889" in lower left corner. This evocative harbor scene depicts the lively waterfront of Naples, capturing the city’s close relationship with the sea. Warm-toned buildings line the shoreline, their facades reflected in the gently rippling water, while a sailboat glides calmly across the harbor, anchoring the composition in a distinctly maritime atmosphere. Figures bathing and moving in the foreground introduce a sense of daily life and human presence, reinforcing the authenticity and intimacy of this Neapolitan coastal setting. The artist’s confident yet sensitive brushwork allows light and reflection to animate the surface of the water, creating a harmonious dialogue between architecture, figures, and sea. The palette of soft blues, earthy reds, and sunlit ochres evokes the Mediterranean climate and character of Naples, conveying both warmth and tranquility. This painting offers a timeless vision of harbor life in southern Italy, balancing architectural structure with fluid, atmospheric elements. A refined and atmospheric work, ideal for collectors of European harbor scenes, Mediterranean landscapes, and traditional maritime paintings. Gorgeous tonalist oil painting woman walking in field by pond with home in background by Willis Seaver Adams (American, 1844-1921), circa 1880. Trees and an amazing sky in the background add depth and interest to this beautiful piece. Signed "W. S. Adams" lower right corner. Condition: Previous restoration includes relining of canvas. Frame is vintage gilt molded and wood frame and shows previous repair of molding losses. Image size: 20"H x 24"W. Auctions records for the artist exceed $6,000. Willis Seaver Adams was known for his landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. A relative recluse for much of his artistic life, his loneliness can be seen in much of his works. Oil miniatures were the focus for almost all of his later works. He is credited with over 425 oils, watercolors, and drawings. Willis Seaver was born in 1844 on a farm in Suffield, near the Connecticut River. He intermittently attended the Suffield Academy, and always wanted to be a painter. A wealthy doctor became his patron, and financed his studies in 1868 at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. When the doctor passed away, Adams returned home and struggled to make a living painting. After working for a photographer for three years, he opened his own studio. Adams helped organize Cleveland's first watercolor exhibit in 1876. Soon thereafter, he completed a portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes, then governor of Ohio, prior to his becoming President of the United States. This portrait enhanced Adams notoriety. In 1878, Adams traveled to Italy where he opened a studio in Venice, and became friendly with neighbor James Whistler. Prior to returning to Springfield, Adams lived in Florence, Italy for three years. He returned to became an instructor for the Springfield Art Association, and began to exhibit his works at the galleries of James D. Gill. His first one-man exhibit was held there in 1894. Other successful exhibitions took place in Chicago, New York, and Boston. Although his works garnered respectable prices and reflected his success, Adams felt he was due more recognition. In 1906, he moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts and converted a barn into a studio. There, he fell into relative obscurity, accompanied mainly by his dog, Collie. In 1921, Adams passed away. Examples of Willis Adams works can be seen at the Kent Memorial Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Suffield Academy. Several Suffield residents are thought to own Adams paintings.

Impressionistic Summer Landscape with Road Painted 1889
Impressionistic Summer Landscape with Road Painted 1889

Impressionistic Summer Landscape with Road Painted 1889

Located in Stockholm, SE

Carl Johansson's "Summer Landscape with Road" is an exquisite landscape that encapsulates the serene beauty of the Swedish countryside. Painted in 1889, the same year Johansson showcased his work at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, one can't help but wonder if this very painting was among those displayed at the fair. "Summer Landscape with Road" offers a glimpse into the idyllic Swedish countryside through its masterful depiction. The scene is bathed in the distinctive light of the sun positioned at 30 degrees north-northwest, a unique aspect of Johansson's artworks. The viewer's eye is drawn along a winding dirt road that meanders through a tranquil pastoral landscape. Birch trees, with their white bark and tender green leaves, stand tall and sway gently, marking the passage toward a distant homestead nestled beside a calm lake. The rustic wooden fences and the clear sky, dotted with soft, billowing clouds, evoke a sense of peaceful solitude. Johansson's meticulous attention to detail and colour is evident in every brushstroke, from the lush greenery to the soft, earthy path leading to the horizon. The artist's signature use of light not only highlights the natural beauty of the North but also enhances the sense of depth and realism in the painting. Johansson's early works, such as this one, are exceedingly rare, making "Summer Landscape with Road" not only a visual delight but also a collector's gem. The painting's magnificent gold frame enhances the bright, vivid colours of the small-format artwork, creating an impactful presence. Carl Johansson's blue impressionistic depictions of Northern Sweden earned him the nickname "Ultramarine Johansson", and his paintings are celebrated in prestigious collections, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Kalmar Art Museum, and the municipality of Hudiksvall. oil on canvas signed and dated Carl Johansson . 89 . unframed 27 x 39 cm framed 41,5 x 53 cm Provenance: The previous owner bought it in 1988 at Åmells Stockholm...

Half-length portrait of a Pharisee - In the shadow of betrayal -

Half-length portrait of a Pharisee - In the shadow of betrayal -

Located in Berlin, DE

Hermann Prell (1854 Leipzig - 1922 Dresden-Loschwitz). Half-length portrait of a Pharisee, 1885. Sketch for the right-hand figure in the painting Judas Iscariot, 1886. Pencil drawing heightened with opaque white and black chalk on beige-grey wove paper (papier vélin), 34 x 27.8 cm (visible size), 52 x 45 cm (mount), signed, dated and inscribed "H. PRELL 1885 zu 'Judas'". Minor browning, collection stamp on the reverse. - In the shadow of betrayal - About the artwork This painting is the sketch for the head of the Pharisee offering the coins to Judas in one of Herrmann Prell's major works, the painting Betrayal of Judas, completed in 1886. The painting belongs to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and is illustrated in Adolf Rosenberg: Prell, Bielefeld and Leipzig 1901, p. 21 (Fig. 19). It is especially highlighted in Thieme-Becker (vol. 27, p. 376). Hermann Prell, Betrayal of Judas, 1886 The monumental head, which fills the picture and is distinguished by its ornamented robe, is almost a lost profile, which in the executed painting is justified by the Pharisee's turning towards Judas. Despite the fact that the sitter withdraws from the viewer by turning away, it was necessary to artistically elaborate the motivation for the purchase of one of Christ's disciples, which is why the drawing focuses on the expression of the face, while the 'accessories' are treated in a more summary manner. In characterising the face, Hermann Prell performs a balancing act: since the Pharisee, despite his destructive actions, is an actor in the history of salvation, the head must show a dignity appropriate to the event, but at the same time the physiognomy must also bear witness to the scheming attitude that led to the betrayal. To solve this dilemma, Prell draws on the traditional depictions of the heads of the apostles, shading the face to indicate the obdurate darkness of the spirit and moving the base of the nose slightly upwards while the mouth falls away, thus giving a physiognomic expression to the motivation of the action. The fatal drama of the betrayal is expressed in the monumentalisation of the head and in the thunderous white highlights that contrast with the darkness of the chalk. As a study, considered by the artist to be a work in itself, this drawing reveals the pictorial problems and brainstorming of monumental painting. About the artist In 1872 Prell, who was one of the most important exponents of monumental painting of his time, began studying painting with Theodor Grosse at the Dresden Academy of Art and continued with Carl Gussow at the Berlin Academy in 1876. Hans von Marées taught him in Rome in 1878. More influential on his work, however, were Arnold Böcklin and Max Klinger, with whom Prell had been friends since his student days and with whom he worked together on several occasions. Prell's first major work, which established his reputation as a monumental painter, were the frescoes in the banqueting hall of the Architektenhaus in Berlin in 1881/82, commissioned by the state and depicting the different periods of architecture. Prell then went to Italy for two years to study fresco painting. Other major commissions followed. These included monumental frescoes in the town halls of Worms (1884), Hildesheim (1882-92), Gdansk (1895) and Dresden, the staircase of the Silesian Museum of Fine Arts in Breslau (1893/94), the throne room of the German Embassy in Rome (1896-99) and the staircase of the Albertinum in Dresden (1900-1904). From 1886 Prell taught at the academy of arts in Berlin and in 1892 he was appointed professor at the academy of arts in Dresden. His students included Osmar Schindler and Hans Unger...
