A river scene with a wooded foreground with plenty of animated detail of the river and the small wooden bridge that crosses it. The artist has animated the painting with raised brush strokes and lush hues of greens and lilacs. The canvas is slightly textured. It is signed in the lower right with an annotation, A. F Aberle, my friend since childhood. MORE ABOUT THIS PAINTING: Medium: Oil on stretched canvas Overall size: 13.5ins x 18ins or 34cms x 46cms (approx) including the frame Date: 1880's Condition: The painting is in good antique condition but you should expect imperfections associated with age, in particular, there are two very small areas of missing paint in the tree. The frame has had renovations throughout but it is in a sturdy condition. Signed: Gustave Césaire Garaud (1844-1914) He was a student of François-Louis Français. His first exhibit at the Salon came in 1878, and he would continue to have showings there until his death. In 1881, two of his works, "Bord du Gapeau près de Montrieux" and "Les Pins de Notre-Dame sous Fenouillet", received honorable mention and were purchased by the Musée d'Art de Toulon. In 1889, he was awarded two third-class medals and, in 1893, two second-class medals. He opened a workshop in Paris, dividing his time between painting there, in Provence and in Brittany. He also created some landscapes in Corsica. Although he never became famous, he enjoyed a good reputation among collectors and was able to organize two exhibits of his own, at the Cercle Volney, in 1891 and 1900. In addition to his canvases, he decorated some private buildings. During this time, he travelled widely; especially to what was then French Indochina. Inspired by these travels, he illustrated several books dealing with the Far East, notably L'Indochine française...

Gorgeous tonalist oil painting woman walking in field by pond with home in background by Willis Seaver Adams (American, 1844-1921), circa 1880. Trees and an amazing sky in the background add depth and interest to this beautiful piece. Signed "W. S. Adams" lower right corner. Condition: Previous restoration includes relining of canvas. Frame is vintage gilt molded and wood frame and shows previous repair of molding losses. Image size: 20"H x 24"W. Auctions records for the artist exceed $6,000. Willis Seaver Adams was known for his landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. A relative recluse for much of his artistic life, his loneliness can be seen in much of his works. Oil miniatures were the focus for almost all of his later works. He is credited with over 425 oils, watercolors, and drawings. Willis Seaver was born in 1844 on a farm in Suffield, near the Connecticut River. He intermittently attended the Suffield Academy, and always wanted to be a painter. A wealthy doctor became his patron, and financed his studies in 1868 at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. When the doctor passed away, Adams returned home and struggled to make a living painting. After working for a photographer for three years, he opened his own studio. Adams helped organize Cleveland's first watercolor exhibit in 1876. Soon thereafter, he completed a portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes, then governor of Ohio, prior to his becoming President of the United States. This portrait enhanced Adams notoriety. In 1878, Adams traveled to Italy where he opened a studio in Venice, and became friendly with neighbor James Whistler. Prior to returning to Springfield, Adams lived in Florence, Italy for three years. He returned to became an instructor for the Springfield Art Association, and began to exhibit his works at the galleries of James D. Gill. His first one-man exhibit was held there in 1894. Other successful exhibitions took place in Chicago, New York, and Boston. Although his works garnered respectable prices and reflected his success, Adams felt he was due more recognition. In 1906, he moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts and converted a barn into a studio. There, he fell into relative obscurity, accompanied mainly by his dog, Collie. In 1921, Adams passed away. Examples of Willis Adams works can be seen at the Kent Memorial Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Suffield Academy. Several Suffield residents are thought to own Adams paintings.

A fine and detailed, cabinet-size oil painting showing an elegant Parisian cafe and bar, the interior lit by luminous, floor-to-ceiling stained-glass windows and filled with fashionably-dressed patrons drinking and socializing beneath a haze of pipe and cigar smoke. A minor, period masterpiece, providing an animated view of the city's fin-de-siècle nightlife, and characterised by finely observed and fully-realized figures showing an unusual degree of both social commentary and psychological penetration. Edouard-Jean Dambourgez first studied with Jules Lefebvre and, subsequently, as an engraver and chromo-lithographer under Gustave Boulanger. In 1880, Dambourgez commenced exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français, and, in 1883, was elected a member of the Society. Throughout the 1880's, he exhibited frequently and with success at the major Paris salons including the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Independants and the Salon des Champs-de-Mars. In 1884, he was commissioned by the Louvre to engrave all illustrations for the catalog to the Thiers Collection, recently bequeathed to the Museum. The recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, Dambourgez was awarded an honorable distinction by the Salon in 1888, and an honorable mention in 1891. In 1888, the critic Albert Wolff recommended his painting, 'A Cheese Shop', for inclusion at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1891, the city of Paris bought his large canvas, 'The Cream and Cheese Market...
