Herman Hyneman (American, 1849-1907) Untitled, c. 1880 Engraving Sight: 13 x 8 1/2 in. Framed: 26 1/2 x 20 1/2 x 3/4 in. Signed bottom The following is from Peter Jung who credits "a friend named Jeff Gold on Long Island." Herman N. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master. In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay. In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. That painting received favorable reviews both in Europe, and later in Philadlephia where it was exhibited alongside the works of other Philadelphia Artists exhibiting at the Salon that included Thomas Eakins, Pearce, Edward May...

Portrait of a Young Woman

Located in San Francisco, CA

Ohio-born painter William J. Forsyth (1854-1935) spent most of his life in Indianapolis and initially trained at the Indiana School of Art. But by 1882 Forsyth wanted to hone his drawing and rendering skills abroad. He enrolled at the Royal Academy in Munich, Germany. Fellow Hoosier students in Munich included artists T. C. Steele and J. Ottis Adams, which helped the new arrival’s transition. Forsyth painted figures like this one while in Munich. One intriguing indication that this piece may have been done during the artist’s Academy period is that a very similar portrait of a remarkably similar sitter was described at auction as "German School, 1891" with the inscription "G. Büttner/Munich '91." However, while there Forsyth shifted his interest to landscapes under the influence of American artist J. Frank Currier...

Keith was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and came to New York with his family and apprenticed to a wood engraver. In 1859, he moved to San Francisco where he worked for an engraver and later set up his own engraving business. Studying with Samuel Marsden Brookes in 1863, he was determined to become a painter.
