This piece was published in the French Art Nouveau publication L'Estampe Moderne. Signed in plate. 15 3/4" x 12" art Henri Bellery-Desfontaines , born with Paris in 1867 and dead the October 6th 1909, is a French Noveau artist Jack-of-All- Trades, who produced tables, illustrations, posters, lithographies, drawings of carpet, pieces of furniture and banknotes, and even dabbled with decoration & architecture. In the 1900s, Paris was the perfect place for a group of young artists influenced by artistic currents like neogothic style or symbolism. Most of them started as painters and they switched later to decorative arts, attracted by the idea of an ever-present art, a lifeless art, a total art. Henri Bellery-Desfontaines was a member of this group and he started as as painter in Pierre-Victor Galland’s atelier. He entrusted him the decorative motifs which would frame Panthéon de Paris' drawings: Maillot, Bonnat, Humbert and specially Jean-Paul Laurens, who proposed him to join his atelier in l’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. With him, he decorated l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris or Le Salon Lobau, Henri Bellery-Desfontaines is thought to have Luc-Olivier Merson (1846-1920) as a teacher. During his years as a student, he started to illustrate magazines and books of tales and in 1895, Bellery-Desfontaines opted rapidly for illustration, probably due to financial problems, and he participated in magazines such as L’Image, L’Estampe Moderne or L’Almanach des Bibliophiles. This year, the Salon des Artistes Français hosted one of his design of tapestry. From 1900 on, he gradually evolved toward an ambitious decorative artist, making tapestries and furniture for rich leaders and patrons. Cuthbert "CB" Bradley for Vanity Fair Magazine "A Judge" - The Rev Cecil Legard 11 July 1901 Lithograph 21 x 37 cm CB's cartoon depicts The Rev Cecil Legard (1843-1918), the Rector of Cottesbrooke and heir to the baronetcy. As well as a clergyman, Legard was a noted sportsman and hound expert; he was a steeplechase rider, and also edited the Foxhound Kennel Stud Book. CB depicts him judging hounds, excellently outfitted; as the biography on the reverse of the mounted lithograph notes, he might be 'the best judge of a foxhound in England'. A copy of the cartoon is held by the Kingston Lacy Estate in Dorset. Cuthbert Bradley was also a sporting man - he famously authored 'Fox-Hunting from Shire to Shire with Many Noted Packs' and worked as a sporting journalist for The Field. As well as illustrating for Vanity Fair, he painted polo and foxhunting scenes, and other pictures of equestrian interest. The majority of his Vanity Fair cartoons are of hunting men. This rare original lithograph print is from 1899. It is one sheet of a huge 24 sheet poster that was created in 1899 to announce Buffalo Bills Wild West. The size of the complete 24 sheet poster would have been approx. 10 feet tall by 20 feet wide and would have been posted on barns and buildings in 1899 to promote Buffalo Bills Wild West before it would come to towns. This 1 sheet of the 24 sheet lithograph is in such good condition because it was found in the Lithographers draws of the print shop that created the poster. It is black and white because it was a proof that was used to create the final layout of the color poster. It indicates on the image that it is No. 2 Buffalo Bill San Juan Hill 1899, so it would have been the 2nd poster down on the left side of the large total image comprised of 24 separate sheets all unique to create the full image. You can see the two black printed lines on the left side indicate where the edge of the poster would have been. We have never seen a complete image of this rare 1899 poster. When we first acquired this rare proof over 20 years ago, we contacted the The Ringling Museum in Florida that houses a large Buffalo Bill poster...
