Henry Arthur Roberts. French ( b.1819 - d.1900 ). Academic Life Study Of A Standing Male Nude. Pencil & Charcoal On Paper. Paper size 23.8 inches x 13.6 inches ( 60.5cm x 34.5cm ). Frame size 28.3 inches x 18.7 inches ( 72cm x 47.5cm ). Available for sale; this academic life drawing of a male nude is by the French artist Henry Arthur Roberts and dates from the early 1840s. The drawing is presented and supplied in a modest hand painted glazed wooden frame dating from the mid-20th century (which is shown in these photographs). This antique drawing is in good condition, commensurate with its age. It is in an untouched condition having never been restored. The paper has handling marks, some light surface dirt, the odd foxing mark and general age toning. The overall patina adds to the aesthetic and is supplied ready to hang and display. The drawing is not signed but came from a portfolio of drawings by Henry Arthur Roberts. Henry Arthur Roberts was a recognised French artist, notable for his portraits and paintings of religious subjects. Born in Paris in 1819, he was the son of British watercolour artist James Roberts, himself active in Paris from 1819 -1846. Henry became a student of his father. Henry Roberts’s talent as a young man was such that he was accepted as a student of Michel Martin Drölling and worked extensively with him. Drölling, the highly acclaimed neoclassic artist (1786-1851) was noted for his theatrical paintings of history and grand portraits. He produced many notable works, including a ceiling work for the Louvre, and works in the Palace of Versailles. Roberts would have studied with Drölling at an early stage in his career, as Drölling died when Roberts was 32. Learning with such a master would have had a huge impact on Roberts in terms of his academic skills and his own emerging style. Roberts exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1839, when he was only 20 years old, right through to 1867. His work in the Universal Exhibition of 1855 won him a Third Class Medal. He became Vice-President of the Association of Artists in Paris and in July 1898 he was elevated to the rank of Knight of the Legion of Honour with a foreign title. This was the highest state honour available to him, in recognition of his status as an artist. Work on canvas Black wooden frame 37 x 45 x 3 cm

This is an original 19th century hand-colored lithograph entitled "Petra, Shewing the Upper or Eastern End of the Valley" by David Roberts, from his Egypt, The Holy Land and Nubia volumes of the large folio edition, published in London by F. G. Moon in 1842. The lithographs were prepared by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) from drawings and paintings by Roberts. The resultant large folio editions of 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia' are considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. This is one of Roberts' most famous and collectible works. The scene captures a view of the magnificent ruins of Petra in what is Jordan today, as it appeared on March 8, 1839, on the day of Roberts' visit. Multiple Arab men are approaching Petra; some on foot and others riding camels. They are dressed in their colorful local costumes. Roberts' signature and hand written date are reproduced in the plate on the left. This hand-colored lithograph is printed on wove paper with wide margins. There is some loss of color in the text in the title and a faint dark curvilinear area in the upper right. The print is otherwise in very good condition. It is presented in a gold-colored wood frame with a tan mat. It is glazed with UV protected conservation glass. All framing materials used are archival museum quality. The frame measures 23.5" high and 30.5" wide. David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter who specialized in landscapes, architectural subjects, and scenes from the Middle East and Europe. Born in Edinburgh, Roberts began his career at age ten as an apprentice to a house painter and eventually became a scene painter for theater companies in Edinburgh and London. In the 1820s, J. M. W. Turner recognized his artistic talent and encouraged him to become a full-time artist. He began to focus on painting landscapes and architecture. In 1838 he traveled to Egypt and soon after to the Holy Land, concluding in Jerusalem. Roberts' travels in the Middle East had a profound impact on his art, and he produced a series of highly detailed and realistic paintings and sketches of the region's famous ruins and other landmarks, including the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Temple of Abu Simbel...

This is a hand-colored folio sized lithograph entitled "Grypus Naevius" (Saw-bill Hummingbird with Nest & Eggs) by John Gould, published in his "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds", published in London in 1850. This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithographic portrait of a Native American entitled "Tah-Chee, A Cherokee Chief", from McKenney and Hall's 'History of the Indian Tribes of North America'. It was lithographed by J. T. Bowen after a painting by Charles Bird King and published by E. C. Biddle in Philadelphia in 1838. Tahchee's name translates to Dutch in Cherokee, and he became known as William Dutch. He was born in 1790 in the Cherokee Nation, which is now in a portion of Alabama. Tahchee became known as a skilled warrior and leader among his people, and he was eventually appointed as a chief of the Cherokee Nation "Old Settlers". During his time as chief, Tahchee was a rival of the Osage people and he worked to protect the Cherokee people and their land from encroachment by white settlers. A fine & large antique maritime oil painting of the war ship HMS Britannia, by Robert Strickland Thomas (1787-1853), the painting circa 1835. He specialised in racing subjects and his few hunting scenes are rare. Herring painted the start of the 1844 Derby, which became known as ‘the dirtiest Derby in history’. He sometimes collaborated with his three sons, J.F.Jnr, Benjamin Jnr and Charles. He also collaborated with James Pollard on a number of racing scenes inc. ‘The Doncaster Gold Cup’, 1838, ‘The Emperor of Russia’s Cup at Ascot’ 1845 and ‘The Dead Heat for the Doncaster Great St. Ledger’ 1849 Herring painted 33 successive winners of the St. Ledger and not surprisingly lived a large part of his life in the Doncaster area before settling in Newmarket in 1830 and then in London in 1835. He suffered serious financial difficulties after his move to London which, thanks to a great friend and patron William Taylor Copeland (1797 – 1868) head of the Spode Porcelain factory at Stoke on Trent, was resolved. He painted many pictures of the Copeland family, some of which were adapted and used as designs on the Spode china...
