This beautiful 19th century framed engraving "The Fighting Temeraire" by James Tibbetts Willmore is based on an original painting by the renowned British artist J.M.W. Turner. It was published by James S. Virtue & Co. in London between 1859-1875. It depicts the once mighty British warship the HMS Temeraire being towed away down the river Thames by a much smaller steamboat to a ship-breaking yard to be broken up for scrap. The Temeraire was first launched in 1798 and represented the pinnacle of British ship-building. 180-feet long, constructed of English oak and armed with 98 guns, she was one of the largest warships of the period. The Temeraire became a symbol of British pride and military power that endured throughout the 19th century. The man-of-war served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and was among the last serving ships to have been at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It became one of the many older ships put out of service in the 1830s and 1840s. The once mighty and feared ship symbolizes a once magnificent, but now obsolete, technology. Turner seems to lament her inglorious final journey, being towed by a less magnificent, but modern steam powered tugboat.
The Turner painting was created in 1838 and is now held in the National Gallery in London. Willmore's engraving, created in 1859, captures the dramatic scene with great detail and skill. The image has become an iconic representation of the decline of Britain's naval power and the transition from sail to steam in the 19th century. The sunset in the background is symbolic of the sun going down on British naval power and tradition. The painting conveys profound and diverse themes that are central to the human experience: those of mortality and change, technology and progress, heroism and brutality. The painting demonstrates Turner’s skill as an artist. His ability to produce scenes of great beauty that are dramatic, but are also symbolic, stimulating both thoughtful analysis, as well as emotion. Bonvin's work has been compared with that of the eighteenth-century artist Chardin, whom Bonvin greatly admired, and from whose work he often borrowed particular motifs. Amongst the artists he personally encouraged were Théodule Ribot and Fantin-Latour.
He was one of a group of artists who challenged the idea that still-life was a mode of artistic expression inferior to the lofty genre of history and religious painting. Bonvin championed the Realist conviction that everyday subject matter was the trues form of artistic expression.
Bonvin was known for keen observation skills and great restraint. In his paintings, you can almost feel the moment between breaths as the subject matter is contemplated and then committed to canvas. This a superb, very personal and very quiet study of the village of Montfaucon on what appears to be an afternoon in the Argonne region in Northeastern France known its deep valleys and dense woodlands.
François is one of the most interesting painters of the 19th century. Bonvin was born in humble circumstances in Paris and had a very difficult childhood. He was the son of a police officer and a seamstress; when he was four years old his mother died of tuberculosis. Young François was left in the care of an old woman who underfed him. John Gould (18041881) is the most prolific publisher of ornithological subjects of all time. In 19th-century Europe, his name was as well known as Audubons was in North America. Unlike Audubon, whose lifes work focused on one region, Gould traveled widely and employed other artists to help create his lavish, hand-colored lithographic folios. John Goulds love of natural history was fostered in the gardens of King George III where his father was chief gardener at Windsor Castle. Although trained as a gardener, Goulds interests quickly evolved, and at the age of 20, he was appointed taxidermist to the Zoological Society of London. Beautiful and intense oil painting depicting the Austrian mountain lake Bergsee. The painting is characterized by a particular play between lights and shadows: the light indeed is distributed in an extremely suffused but homogeneous way on the view but it is also able to create that sense of magic that characterized the whole landscape. The color of the lake therefore assumes a transparency and an iridescent blue that tends to the green and reflects the color of the surrounding mountains. The sky appears full of rainy clouds but they still allow the rays of the last sun to shine on. The general vision conveys calm and tranquility thanks also to the refined use of color and the play of lights and shadows, the turquoise and the pale opaque blue of the lake is perfectly emphasized by the various green tones of the trees. The white, gray and light brown rocky mountains embrace the lake and the cloudy sky in shades of blue increases the feeling of tranquility.
The landscape is desolate; the only signs of life are the three fishermen on the shore: they are three small figures painted in different poses and illuminated by the light too. The surface of the water reflects in a spectacular way the surrounding landscape, it is similar to the surface of a mirror.
The style, fantastic and almost dreamy, is into the full Germanic Romanticism. Mindful of Caspar David Friedrich's memoirs (Greifswald, 1774 - Dresda, 1840), the author certainly took his cue from the style of the German and the Austrian Romanticism; tangible signs of Romantic painting are the choice of the subject, an uncontaminated Nordic landscape, and the almost fairytale atmosphere that we find in the composition.

James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician.

The artist John Vine was born with a disability that did not appear to interfere with his ability to draw and paint, largely self-taught as an animal painter, as his reputation grew he exhibited at the Society of British Artists in Grosvenor Square. Based at Colchester he painted many different subjects including farms, houses, children and animals.
Eric W. Towler was a remarkable man. He was born in 1900 and left school at the age of 12 to work in a Yorkshire pit and through a lifetime of hard work, self-improvement, luck and a refusal to limit his horizons achieved many of his aspirations.
As a Yorkshireman through and through, he believed in ‘spending the brass in his pocket’ and over time he was successful enough to acquire enough ‘brass’ to enable his purchase of Glympton Park and furnish it as a traditional country house with all the trappings – in his case collections of...
