Oil Portrait of a Victorian Lady, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Painted in the 19th century, this exquisite miniature portrait wonderfully exemplifies realism in traditional oil painting. The small artwork is painted in the conventional portraiture style of the Old Masters, and achieves soft realism with fine brushwork and a subdued, neutral palette. The half length portrait depicts a fine Victorian woman dressed in all black with a delicate lace collar and bonnet. She wears a ruby broach...

Title: "American Anhinga - Snake Bird" (Plate 420, No. 84)
Portfolio: The Birds of America, First Royal Octavo Edition
Year: 1840-1844
Medium: Original Hand-Colored Lithograph on wove paper
Limited edition: approx. 1,200
Printer: John T. Bowen, Philadelphia, PA
Publisher: John James Audubon and J.B. Chevalier, New York, NY and Philadelphia, PA

Image size: 6.63" x 4.63"
Condition: Minor toning to sheet and some faint discoloration in margins. Old glue staining along right binding edge as normal. It is otherwise in very good condition with strong colors
Notes:
Provenance: private collection - Cleveland, OH. Lithography and hand-coloring by American artist John T. Bowen (1801-c.1856). Comes from Audubon's famous seven volume portfolio "The Birds of America", First Royal Octavo Edition (1840-1844), which consists of 500 hand-colored lithographs. The preceding 1836 Havell edition of this work has a different title: "Black-bellied Darter", (Plate: CCCXVI - 396, No. 64).
Based on a drawing inscribed "New Orleans 1822 - redrawn ... 1836". This conspicuous bird had various names including "water turkey" and "Bec à Lancette".
The Anhinga, sometimes called snakebird, darter, American darter, or water turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from a'ñinga in the Brazilian Tupi language and means "devil bird" or "snake bird".
To make 'The Birds of America' more affordable and widely available, in 1839 John James Audubon began the first octavo edition, a smaller version of the folio which was printed and hand-colored by J. T. Bowen in Philadelphia. Employing a new invention, the camera lucida, the images were reduced in size, rendered in intermediate drawings by John James Audubon and his son John Woodhouse, and then drawn onto lithographic stones. These miniatures exhibit a remarkable amount of attention to quality and detail, as well as a meticulous fidelity to the larger works. Some compositional changes were made in order to accommodate the smaller format. Like the Havell edition, John James Audubon’s first...

'Berglandschap', Mid 19thC Oil on Canvas of a Mountain Valley in Switzerland.
By Alexandre Calame
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 19th Century oil on canvas view of a Swiss valley and mountainscape by Alexander Calame. The painting is signed bottom left. The canvas is on a fine stretcher with 'keys'. The painting has been in a private collection in the North of France since the early 20th Century. The painting is currently framed but needs extensive restoration, the frame can be included at no additional cost if required.
A very beautiful and expert rendition of one of Calame's iconic Swiss mountain views. Atmospheric view of light and shade, a moody sky with the sun just breaking through over a small mountain cottage retreat.
Alex Calame was born in Corsier-sur-Vevey, today a part of Vevey, Switzerland. He was the son of a skillful marble worker in Vevey, but because his father lost the family fortune, Calame could not concentrate on art, but rather he was forced to work in a bank from the age of 15. When his father fell from a building and then died, it was up to the young Calame to provide for his mother.
In his spare time he began to practice drawing small views of Switzerland. In 1829 he met his patron, the banker Diodati, who made it possible for him to study under landscape painter François Diday. After a few months he decided to devote himself fully to art.
In 1835 he began exhibiting his Swiss-Alps and forest paintings in Paris and Berlin. He became well known, especially in Germany. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. In 1842 he went to Paris and displayed his works Mont Blanc, the Jungfrau, the Brienzersee, the Monte Rosa and Mont Cervin.
He taught in Geneva, where Adolf Mosengel was one of his pupils as were some of the children of the Russian Imperial family of Nicholas I.
Alexandre Calame...

Portrait de Frederique Regamey - Oil Paint by Alphonse Legros - 1859
Located in Roma, IT
Portrait d'Homme is an artwork realized by the french artist Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) in 1859.
Oil on Canvas.
Good conditions except some rips on the edges.
Broche du nº 23 du catalogue Malassis-Thibaudeau "Portrait de Frederique Regamey". Collection Thibaudeau.
Alphonse Legros was born on May 8, 1837 in Dijon, France. While young, Legros visited the farms of his relatives, and the peasants and landscapes of that part of France are the subjects of many of his works. He was sent to the art school at Dijon with a view to qualifying for a trade, and was apprenticed to an interior decorator. In 1851, Legros left for Paris, but passing through Lyon he worked for six months as journeyman muralist for painter/art restorer Jean-Baptiste Beuchot, who was painting the chapel of Cardinal Bonald in the cathedral. In Paris, Legros studied with theater scene painter Charles-Antoine. He attended also the drawing-school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran (the "Petite école") where he found made friends with Jules Dalou and Auguste Rodin. In 1855, he attended the evening classes of the École des Beaux Arts.Legros sent two portraits to the Paris Salon of 1857: one was rejected, and formed part of the exhibition of protest organized by Francois Bonvin in his studio; the other, which was accepted, was a profile portrait of his father. Art critic Champfleury saw the work in the Salon, and sought out the artist to enlist him in the "Realists," a group anchored by Gustave Courbet.Legros picked up the art of etching by watching a colleague in Paris who worked as a commercial engraver, and taught himself both etching and medallion making. He considered the traditional journey to Italy an important part of artistic training, and in later years, gave part of his salary to augment the income available for a travelling internship. He moved to England in 1863 and in 1864 married Frances Rosetta Hodgson. In his early career, he lived from the sales of his etchings and teaching. He began teaching etching at the South Kensington School of Art and in 1876 became a Slade Professor at University College, London, succeeding Edward Poynter...
