Artist Statement: "The art of making, for me, is very much a response to the human condition of needing to connect to one another, as well as to what lies just beyond the borders of our realities. I am drawn to the idea that art can have the ability to affect those who look upon it, allowing these portraits to be conduits to a realm within our subconscious. Although my females are hard ceramic sculptures, their hollow, eggshell-like interiors feel like a glove or a mask that can easily be slipped on and off, like the psychic armor of a distant self. An introspective dialogue is started as I make each piece, invoking a surreal understanding of the physical and emotional auras of these strange beauties. Heavy in symbolism, they illustrate the psychological scope of a hybrid creature. Their wide-eyed gazes are meant to portray an emotional duality that is constantly evolving. Joe Funk was an American artist and print maker born in Los Angeles, California, to Polish and German immigrant parents. He died in 1981 in Santa Cruz, California.
As a young person in Los Angeles, Joe Funk showed an interest in art. He studied at the Otis and Chouinard Art Institutes and worked on several murals throughout Los Angeles in the Works Progress Administration. He served in the United States Army, from 1943 to 1946, in Korea and Okinawa a s a heavy anti-aircraft artillery mechanic and instructor, warehouseman, and artist, publicist, and graphic designer for special events at Headquarters Company, Asiatic Command. At the ASCOM University in Korea, he was an instructor in pencil sketching. It was during his time in Korea that he developed a lifelong interest in Asian art. Using the G.I. Bill, after the Korean War, he earned a Masters Degree in fine art from the University of Southern California.
In the 1950s, Joe met Lynton Kistler and worked at Kistler’s facility in Los Angeles, the only lithographic press open for business on the west coast at that time. During his time as an apprentice, Joe printed for many well-known artists, such as Jean Charlot, man Ray, Max Ernst, Emerson Woelffer and June Wayne.
When June Wayne opened the Tamarind Lighography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1960, she offered the status of fellow printer to Joe Funk. At Tamarind, he began work printing lithographs for guest artists and training future printmakers.
After Tamarind, Joe became the technical director at Kanthos Press from 1961-1962, where he printed for Jose Cuevasand and Aubrey Schwartz. In 1964, he became co-owner of Joseph Press and was printmaker for Sam Francis, Arnold Belkin and Rico Lebrun. From 1962-1964, Joe taught at the Chouinart Art Institute.

In his recent works sculptor Nicholas Crombach uses the markers of tradition to critique social rituals. Through the employment of the mythology and the rich visual culture of the hunt, Crombach assembles works which revel in contradiction. He has created a series of unexpected juxtapositions that examine the cultural significance and the complex issues percolating around hunting and sporting traditions in the 21st century.
For this exhibition, Crombach riffs off the myth of Diana and Actaeon, which provides a poignant framework for his theme. In the original story, Actaeon, the hunter and grandson of King Cadmus, is in the forest with his dogs, when he spies Artemis (Diana) in her bath attended by her nymphs. Diana was the goddess of the hunt, but when the mortal Actaeon sees her, her nymphs try to cover her modesty. She splashes him with water, turning him from a mortal man into a stag, who flees into the forest only to be hunted down and killed by his own dogs. The hunter becomes the hunted.
Crombach’s Fetch (2018) refers to the mythology of Diana and Actaeon as he transforms the lofty and classical story of metamorphoses into a game of fetch in the local park, constructed on a grand scale. In Fetch (2018), Crombach creates a hybrid between the art historical imagery from paintings of hounds hunting stags with the flashy colours and synthetic materials of modern day dog chew toys. The sculpture is displayed alongside a variety of chew toys that act as an index for the sculptures interpretation, some transformed into porcelain that has been marked with the aristocratic hunting motifs found on antique English pottery. Here, the assembly of works create a conversation on the blurred boundaries between: histories of domestication, the working relationships we have with animals, contemporary issues of hunting as “play”, tradition and survival.
A second major new sculpture “End of the Chase” is a collapsed version of a Victorian period rocking horse housed in London’s V&A Museum Of Childhood. The sculpture responds to the 2014 hunting act that passed in Britain which in turn attempts to obliterate the tradition of hunting with hounds, most commonly associated with the fox hunt...

Very Big Ceramic from "Les Argonautes" Vallauris
Workshop "Les Argonautes", Vallauris: Isabelle Ferlay (1917-?) And Frédérique Bourguet (1925-1997)
Isabelle Ferlay and Frédérique Bourguet founded their ceramic workshop in Vallauris in 1953, which they named "Les Argonautes", in reference to the famous Greek epic.
Isabelle studied painting at the Fine Arts school of Lyon in 1940, then she attended the Fine Arts in Marseille. Finally, she finished her artistic training in Montpellier, at the Fontcarade national school, where she learned ceramics.
Françoise dit Frédérique Bourguet studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier until 1945 and it was in Sèvres, in Françoise Bizette's studio, that she trained in the art of ceramics. She created her first workshop in Paris in 1945, which she shared with Valentine Schlegel until 1951. The two women ceramicists then practiced
modeling technique. It was in 1953 that she met Isabelle Ferlay and together, they decided to set up a workshop in Vallauris. They produce
shaped pieces, sometimes molded, made of earthenware, enamelled in bright colors. In the 1970s they made stoneware cooked over a wood fire. Some ceramists frequented their workshop, notably the very talented Jacques Innocenti and François Raty.

The ceramic sculptures of SunKoo Yuh are composed of tight groupings of various forms including plants, animals, fish, and human figures. While Korean art, Buddhism, and Confucian beliefs inform some aspects of his imagery, implied narratives that often suggest socio-political critiques largely drive his work. Yuh is currently Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. The Rubin Center has exhibited two monumental columns that showcase Yuh’s mastery of his complex narratives and the ceramic medium. Yuh’s work is included in the collections of the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among others. Honors and awards he has received include the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, the Grand Prize at the 2nd World Ceramic Biennale International Competition, Icheon, Korea, The Elizabeth R. Raphael Founder’s Prize, and the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant.
