Abstract Australian Post Modernist Sculpture Peter D. Cole Metal, Enamel, Marble
Located in Surfside, FL
Peter D. Cole (Australian, b. 1947) Symbols of Landscape, 1987 Mixed metal, enamel and marble signed P.D. Cole and dated 21 x 6 1/2 x 6 in (53 x 16.5 x 15cm) Provenance: Macquarie Galleries, Sydney, Australia, 1987. Sculptor Peter D. Cole was born in Gawler, South Australia and trained at the South Australian School of Art between 1965 and 1968. Since the 1980’s Cole has been based in the Kyneton District of Victoria, where he has established himself as one of Australia’s senior and most renowned contemporary sculptors, drawing on the landscape as a source of inspiration and recent research trips to Japan and India have added to his rich source material. As a public artist, Cole has made a significant contribution to the urban landscape and public spaces of Australia receiving the Australian National Trust Heritage Award and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture Award of Merit for Foundation Park, a permanent work at The Rocks, Sydney. He is highly sought for commissions and his work is prominent in many public and corporate collections throughout Australia, including Parliament House, Canberra, the National Gallery of Australia, and Brisbane International Airport and recently Windsor Railway Station precinct. He was awarded the H.P. Gill medal for top student and the Contemporary arts Society award for drawing in 1968 and has exhibited regularly since 1969 with exhibitions in Australia and America, with notably a solo exhibition in 1995 at The Carpenter Centre, Harvard University USA. Peter D. Cole ranks as one of Australia's senior and most renowned contemporary sculptors. Graphic, minimalist and refined, his uncompromising aesthetic vision encompasses both large-scale structures, aerial works, and more intimate, witty ruminations. An accomplished water-colourist and draughtsman, Cole's vision translates easily into works on paper, valued by collectors for the insight they provide into his practice. Cole's robust materials- brass, bronze, painted steel and aluminium- vibrant colours and precise shapes articulate spatial, intellectual, and philosophical concepts. He is also interested in the notion of 'diagrammatic' landscapes, ones that express the transition between the flat plains of the Australian bush, and a more city-centric urban cacophony. Cole's work observes and recognises the boundaries of modern life without limiting its scale, or its scope. Cole is the recipient of the Australian National Trust Heritage Award (1996), the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture Award of Merit (1995), and is highly sought for commissions. His work is prominent in many public and corporate collections throughout Australia, including Parliament House, Canberra, the National Gallery of Australia, and Brisbane International Airport. Hs work bears similarities to Peter Shire, Charlie Hewitt and Brad Howe. Cole lectured in sculpture between 1975 and 2001 and has worked continuously on his practice encompassing sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, design and architecture. His work is represented in many collections both private and public throughout Australia, America, Japan and Europe. Book Sculpture Paper Mache Enamel Painting Jean Lowe Please Don't Eat Daisy
Located in Surfside, FL
Jean Lowe (American, b. 1960) Book-form sculpture, 2004 "Please Don't Eat Daisy", Enamel painted papier-mache Hand signed and dated verso Dimensions 10.5"h x 12.75"w x 4"d This title is well suited for vegetarians, vegans and plant based diets! Jean Lowe is a California-based painter and sculptor. She creates installations and sculptural works of enamel-painted papier-mâché. Lowe earned a B.A. from UC Berkeley in 1983. She earned her MFA from UC San Diego in 1988. She was a lecturer at UC San Diego from 1992 to 2008. Lowe's installations are handmade, labor intensive and visually playful installations, with papier-mâché furnishings and objects juxtaposed to site specific wall painting. Lowe says of her installations, "Intellectually I am driven by an interest in challenging a status quo anthropocentric world view and formally interested in marrying that content to a 'domestic' decorative esthetic." Many of Lowe's installations have quoted 18th and 19th century French decoration, rife with romanticized images of animals and nature and imbued with a sense of class and privilege. Into this fabric she substitutes or integrate corresponding contemporary attitudes--both about our treatment of the land and its other inhabitants and our attitudes regarding decoration: the wrestling match between high and low art. Wry humor. Lowe creates sculptural representations of everyday objects using papier-mâché and enamel paint. She is known for her papier-mâché books and has created a large collection of them with evocative and amusing titles. Her work Books and Ideas in an Age of Anxiety comprises a collection of them in display cases and is situated in Byers Hall at UCSF as part of the J. Michael Bishop Art Collection at Mission Bay. Among the book titles are: Accelerated Zen Buddhism: How to Win at the Hereafter. Anxiety: The Unexploited Weight Loss Tool. Artistic Mammography. The Eco-Tourist's Guide to Las Vegas. A Guide to Box Wines. Hot Buttered Cop Porn. How to Dominate Women. Militant Feminist Veganism for All. The Triumph of Minimalism and other such titles. Exhibitions Lowe has exhibited in both New York and Los Angeles. She participated in the 1994 exhibition Bad Girls West. Curated by Marcia Tucker, Bad Girls was a humorous and transgressive look at gender and feminist issues. It featured work from artist across many media, including photo, painting, sculpture, performance, film, comics, advertisements, writings and more. Abstract Painted Ceramic Tile Pop Art Painting Italian Neo Figurative Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
This painted ceramic tile by Italo Scanga, epitomizes the characteristics of his oeuvre. Polychrome and vibrant art from the Memphis Milano era. This is signed with his initials. This is reminiscent of the mid century work of Jean Lurcat and Jean Picart le Doux. Italo Scanga (June 6, 1932 - July 7, 2001), an Italian-born American artist, was known for his sculptures, prints and, paintings, mostly created from found objects. In his youth in Calabria, Italy he worked as a cabinetmaker's apprentice and studies sculpture with a man who carved statues of saints. Italo Scanga was an innovative neo Dada, neo-Expressionist, and neo-Cubist multimedia artist who made assemblage, collage, sculptures of ordinary objects and created prints, glass, and ceramic works. Modern Italian abstract geometric folk art. Scanga's materials included natural objects like branches and seashells, as well as kitsch figurines, castoff musical instruments and decorative trinkets salvaged from flea markets and thrift shops. He combined these ingredients into free-standing assemblages, which he then painted. Although visually ebullient, the results sometimes referred to gruesome episodes from Greek mythology or the lives and deaths of martyred saints. He considered his artistic influences to be sweepingly pan-cultural, from African sculpture to Giorgio de Chirico. He often collaborated with the sculptor Dale Chihuly, who was a close friend. Constructed of wood and glass, found objects or fabric, his ensembles reflect a trio of activities—working, eating, and praying. These activities dominate the lives of those who live close to the land, but they are also activities that are idealized by many who contemplate, romantically, a simpler, bucolic life. Italo graduated from Michigan State University where he befriended fellow artists Richard Merkin and David Pease. He studied under Lindsey Decker who introduces him to welding and sculpture after his initial interest in photography. Also studies with Charles Pollock, the brother of Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock. His first teaching job was at University of Wisconsin (through 1964). where he met Harvey Littleton, a fellow instructor. He later moves to Providence, Rhode Island,I to teach at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Is colleagues with artists Richard Merkin and Hardu Keck. Starts a correspondence with HC Westermann. Spends summers teaching at Brown University; colleague of Hugh Townley. Moves to State College, PA, and teaches at Pennsylvania State University for one year. Meets artists Juris Ubans, Harry Anderson, Richard Frankel, and Richard Calabro, who remain friends throughout his career. 1967: David Pease helps him get a tenure track position at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA, . Artists he works closely with include Ernest Silva, Lee Jaffe, Donald Gill, and William Schwedler. Meets graduate student Dale Chihuly while lecturing at RISD and develops a lifelong friendship. 1969: One person exhibition, Baylor Art Gallery, Baylor University, Waco, TX. Works very closely with students Larry Becker and Heidi Nivling (who later run a gallery in Philadelphia, PA), and Harry Anderson. Welcomes many artists into his home including Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Bruce Nauman (a former student), Vito Acconci, Ree Morton and Rafael Ferrer. 1973: "Saints Glass" at 112 Greene Street Gallery, NYC. Installation at the Institute of Contemporary Art at University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. Meets Gordon Matta Clark and contributes to an artist cookbook. Goes to Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, WA, founded by Dale Chihuly, as a visiting artist. He continues to work there annually through 2001. Works over the years with Pilchuck artists Richard Royal, Seaver Leslie, Jamie Carpenter, Joey Kirkpatrick, Flora Mace, Robbie Miller, Billy Morris, Buster Simpson...
