Life Magazine Art Deco Showgirls Cartoon
Located in Wilton Manors, FL
Barbara Shermund (1899-1978). Showgirls Cartoon for Life Magazine, 1934. Ink, watercolor and gouache on heavy illustration paper, matting window measures 16.5 x 13 inches; sheet measures 19 x 15 inches; Matting panel measures 20 x 23 inches. Signed lower right. Very good condition with discoloration and toning in margins. Unframed. Provenance: Ethel Maud Mott Herman, artist (1883-1984), West Orange NJ. For two decades, she drew almost 600 cartoons for The New Yorker with female characters that commented on life with wit, intelligence and irony. In the mid-1920s, Harold Ross, the founder of a new magazine called The New Yorker, was looking for cartoonists who could create sardonic, highbrow illustrations accompanied by witty captions that would function as social critiques. He found that talent in Barbara Shermund. For about two decades, until the 1940s, Shermund helped Ross and his first art editor, Rea Irvin, realize their vision by contributing almost 600 cartoons and sassy captions with a fresh, feminist voice. Her cartoons commented on life with wit, intelligence and irony, using female characters who critiqued the patriarchy and celebrated speakeasies, cafes, spunky women and leisure. They spoke directly to flapper women of the era who defied convention with a new sense of political, social and economic independence. “Shermund’s women spoke their minds about sex, marriage and society; smoked cigarettes and drank; and poked fun at everything in an era when it was not common to see young women doing so,” Caitlin A. McGurk wrote in 2020 for the Art Students League. In one Shermund cartoon, published in The New Yorker in 1928, two forlorn women sit and chat on couches. “Yeah,” one says, “I guess the best thing to do is to just get married and forget about love.” “While for many, the idea of a New Yorker cartoon conjures a highbrow, dry non sequitur — often more alienating than familiar — Shermund’s cartoons are the antithesis,” wrote McGurk, who is an associate curator and assistant professor at Ohio State University’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. “They are about human nature, relationships, youth and age.” (McGurk is writing a book about Shermund. And yet by the 1940s and ’50s, as America’s postwar focus shifted to domestic life, Shermund’s feminist voice and cool critique of society fell out of vogue. Her last cartoon appeared in The New Yorker in 1944, and much of her life and career after that remains unclear. No major newspaper wrote about her death in 1978 — The New York Times was on strike then, along with The Daily News and The New York Post — and her ashes sat in a New Jersey funeral home...

Sailor’s Ball
By Margrete Levy
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Margrete Levy 1881-1962 Levy was a Danish artist; she worked in Paris from 1905-1911. Levy was niece to the Danish master painter Kristian Zartmann. She married French author Louis Nicolai Levy in 1911. She applied for technical school at Charlotte Sode and Julie Meldahl's school before applying for admission to the Academy of Fine Arts for Women, where she studied at Viggo Johansen 1900-1902. In 1902 she traveled to Florence as a nanny for a Danish family, giving her the opportunity to study the old masters of the art collections. When she returned home, she continued her education in 1904-05 at Bertha and Dorph's painting school. In 1905, she traveled to Paris and taught at various drawing schools while studying the collections of the Louvre, especially Leonardo da Vinci, who inspired her for the symbolic painting Five Sisters , 1905, which she debuted at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition the following year. 1906-07 she was a student at the French Academy in Rome. With a few interruptions she exhibited at Charlottenborg's Spring Exhibition 1913-43, and on several occasions she also participated in Charlottenborg's Autumn Exhibition and the Artists' Autumn Exhibition. She had several personal exhibitions, including 1910 in Ole Haslunds Hus, 1919 and 1923 in Kunstforeningen, 1927 at Møntergården and 1945 in Alfred Andersen's Art Shop. She participated in several foreign exhibitions, for example Modern Danish Artists in Brighton, England 1912, and Exposition présentée par le Club international Féminin , Paris 1958. She was often represented at exhibitions reserved for women, for example Nine Painters in Admiral Gjeddes Gaard, in 1936 and Nordic Artists in Stockholm 1948. She participated in the Women's Artists Retrospective Exhibition in 1920, which was organized by the Women's Artists Society, on whose board she sat. Along with 18 other members, including Anna and Helga Ancher, Christine Swane, Elisabeth Neckelmann and, Olivia Holm-Møller, she exhibited at the Kunstforeningen in 1930. For the painting Three Sisters , she was awarded 1931 Carlson's Prize by the Academy. The painting shows both back to the old masters and to the new realists such as Niels Strøbek...

A Liberated Lady On The Cliffs Nude Sunbathing Framed 1920s French Oil Painting
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Raymond Moritz. French ( b.1891 - d.1950 ). A Liberated Lady On The Cliffs, 1927. Oil On Canvas. Signed Lower Left. Image size 25 inches x 20.7 inches ( 63.5cm x 52.5cm ). Frame size 29.3 inches x 24.8 inches ( 74.5cm x 63cm ). Available for sale; this original oil painting is by the French artist Raymond Moritz and dates from 1927. The painting is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary frame (which is shown in these photographs), mounted with new fixtures. The canvas and the painted surface have benefitted from cleaning and conservation, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. This vintage painting is now in very good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower left. A later dedication to “Louise” dated April 1942 in the artist’s hand is set around the earlier signing. Raymond Moritz was a French impressionist artist and illustrator. He was born in Paris on 8 July 1891. His family came from the Alsace region and were poor and Catholic. On his mother’s side, the Staubs were from Wihr-au-Val where they had been coopers for several generations. His uncle, Marie Clement Staub, was the founder in Canada of the Sisters of Saint Joan of Arc. Moritz fought during the Great War in the Picardy region of the Somme with the 2nd machine gunner company. He won the French 1914-1918 War medal with bronze palm attachment, which signifies that the awardee was mentioned in dispatches at army level. Moritz obviously created some art during the war because during the inauguration of the new town hall in the town of Albert he was congratulated by the French President, Albert Lebrun, and the British press for the paintings he had produced. Albert was the main town behind the lines for the Allies on the Somme battle fields...

Female Nude Study Charcoal and Red Chalk Drawing by Georges Lucien Guyot
Located in Atlanta, GA
French artist Georges Lucien Guyot (1885 - 1972) signed this charming woman nude study. This painting features a lovely design of a woman getting out of the bath and wiping with a towel. Only a few lines in charcoal and red chalk or sanguine mark the silhouette and posture and capture the model's expression. The red color emphasizes the color of the skin and imbues the lascivious movement. The sketches of the bath towel are only suggested, but they give the whole thing a lot of softness and an incredible illusion of movement. Signed on the bottom left corner: Georges Lucien Guyot. The artist employed a method known as "sanguine" (red chalk paint) which is red crayon or chalk. The drawing has a blood-red, reddish, or flesh coloration. For centuries, painters from the 15th and 16th centuries, including famous masters like Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo da Vinci, have used it for drawing. The drawing has an elaborate off-white matte with acrylic glass protection and a modern wood frame with a deep-textured pattern in red and yellow. Measurements: With Frame: 20.87 in wide (53 cm) x 28.35 in high (72 cm) x 1 in deep (2.5 cm). View alone: 11.44 in wide (29 cm) x 18.94 in high (48 cm). Biography: Georges Lucien Guyot (born December 10, 1885, in Paris, where he died December 31, 1972) is a French artist, sculptor, and painter. From an early age, Georges Guyot showed artistic abilities, but the modest conditions of his parents did not allow him to study art. So he did his apprenticeship with a wood sculptor. Guyot excelled in copying works from the 15th, 16th, and 17th Centuries but rapidly showed an attraction for nature. This attraction led him to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, where he could study wild animals and translate his observations into sculptures and paintings. A familiar figure of Montmartre, Georges Guyot was the guest of the Bateau-Lavoir from the time of Cubism. In 1931, he joined the group of Twelve, created by François Pompon and Jane Poupelet...

City Street: Fifth Avenue
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Presenting a just discovered oil painting from the earliest period, c.1932, of American artist Ron Blumberg. After completing his fine art studies art at La Grande Academie Chaumiere in Paris Ron Blumberg left for New York in 1932, where he worked for eight years as a National Academy artist and a member of the Art Students League. Art Deco paintings might not have been as abundant as other decorative art forms when the movement first materialized in the early 1900s, as there wasn’t a painting-specific component of the 1925 Parisian exhibition that gave way to the term Art Deco. But many artists — such as those working as magazine illustrators, glass artists or sculptors — embraced the characteristics of the fashionable style even if painting wasn't their primary medium.

While sculpture and painting were initially secondary Art Deco media, Art Deco paintings were still lively and rich. As part of a reaction against the organic forms and floral motifs that underpinned Art Nouveau, Art Deco painters introduced geometric abstraction and distortion in their work. Painters working in the Art Deco style were inspired by Cubist forms and the bright colors of Fauvism, and an offshoot of Art Deco painting emerged in the 1930s as murals, a way to decorate buildings in the United States after the Great Depression.

Dunbar D. Beck, Witold Gordon, René Buthaud, Erté and Emil Fiala are some of the painters associated with Art Deco that you can find on 1stDibs.
