Alexis de Leeuw was born in the Belgian town of Bruges in 1822. De Leeuw painted accomplished winter scenes capturing light with great accuracy. De Leeuw died at the young age of 45. One cannot help but feel that a potentially great artist was lost.

A Winter Scene, Alexis De Leeuw, 1848 – 1883 Bruges, Belgian Painter, Signed
By Alexis De Leeuw
Located in Knokke, BE
A brilliant work of nostalgia by Belgian Romantic Alexis de Leeuw. An incredibly fine painting that was been beautifully preserved through the years, capturing a crisp glimpse into the rustic beauty of winter in the late 19th century. The scene is set at golden hour as the sun is setting and a full spectrum of pinks, oranges, purples, and blues cascade across the cloudy skies. The nature and especially rural life are depicted in a very idyllic way. A Winter Scene Alexis De Leeuw 1848 – 1883 Bruges Belgian Painter Signature: Signed bottom right Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Image size 99 x 76,50 cm, frame size 125 x 102 cm Biography: De Leeuw Alexis was born in 1848. He was a Belgian painter of genre scenes and romantic winter landscapes, richly decorated with figures and animals. He also painted several pastoral landscapes. Almost nothing is known about his life, although he was successful, given the quality and scope of his oeuvre. Alexis de Leeuw was influenced by the Dutch Romantics and specialized in an idyllic winter landscape with horses and dogs. Alexis De Leeuw painted until 1883 and spent many years living and working in England. He exhibited in the 1860s at the Royal Academy, the British Institute of Art, the galleries of Suffolk Street and the Royal Hiberian Academy. His winter scenes were widely used to produce Christmas and greeting cards. He was one of the Belgian representatives of the ‘horse genre’, to which Wouterus Verschuur...
