André Derain Drawings and Watercolor Paintings
French, 1880-1954
André Derain is best known as a leading figure of the avant-garde movement and — alongside Henri Matisse — a cofounder of Fauvism at the turn of the 20th century. Derain’s innovative use of expressive colors and simplified forms in his figurative paintings, landscapes and portraits continue to dazzle collectors and art enthusiasts everywhere.
Born in 1880 in Chatou, France, Derain began his formal art training at age 18 at the Académie Camillo, where he met Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck. In 1905, Derain, Matisse and de Vlaminck exhibited their works at the Salon d’Automne in Paris, where critic Louis Vauxcelles used the word fauves (wild beasts) to describe the loosely connected collective of artists’ prioritization of audacious, vivid color in their energetic works, eventually leading to wide adoption of the term Fauvism.
In 1905 and 1906, Derain traveled to London, where he produced a series of Fauvist “form through color” paintings. These included The London Bridge, Charing Cross Bridge and A Corner of Hyde Park. After seeing a retrospective of Paul Gauguin’s work, Derain painted The Dance, a nude that is demonstrative of Gauguin’s influence in its bold, flat colors and in Derain’s depiction of primitive dancing figures.
In 1910, Derain destroyed many of his unsold works and began painting landscapes in the Cubist style of Paul Cézanne. He befriended Pablo Picasso and grew interested in African tribal art. After World War I, he focused on figurative and nude drawings and, in the early 1920s, abandoned Fauvism and Cubism altogether in favor of classical art. In 1930, the artist publicly condemned modernism, leading to his ostracization by the avant-garde community.
Derain was later honored with a retrospective of his works at the Kunsthalle in Bern, Switzerland. Additionally, the Exposition des Artistes Independants invited Derain to exhibit in 1937.
Derain’s wide range of styles — from Fauvism and Cubism to classicism and Postimpressionism — influenced many artists throughout his lifetime. Today, Derain’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate gallery in London, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

Mordecai Dickstein (later Avniel) was born in 1900 in Minsk, present-day Belarus. He studied fine arts in Yekaterinburg, Russia (1913–19) and at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem (1923). Avniel immigrated to Palestine in 1921 where he first worked as a pioneer in citrus plantations near Petah Tikva. In 1923, at the urging of Boris Schatz, he went to Jerusalem to further his art studies at Bezalel. He later taught painting and sculpture at the school, and served a term as director of the Small Sculpture Section of the Sculpture Department (1924–28). From 1935 on, Avniel lived in Haifa. Avniel was also a lawyer and a founding partner of the Haifa firm Avniel, Salomon & Company.
Avniel regularly showed his work in group exhibitions of the Painters and Sculptors' Association of Israel. He was awarded the Herman Struck Prize (1952), Tenth Anniversary Prize for Watercolours, Ramat Gan (1958), Histadrut Prize (1961), and First Prize Haifa Municipality (1977). He represented Israel at the 1958 Venice Biennale and the 1962 International Art Seminar at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Avniel was a member of the Artists' Colony in Safed and maintained a studio on Mount Carmel.
Mordechai Avniel is best known for his deft and singular landscape work.
His works are held in numerous museums and collections both in Israel and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA. Avniel's manipulations of light and colour share much with those of compatriot artists Shimshon Holzman and Joseph Kossonogi.

Andre Derain was born in 1880 at Chatou, which was then a kind of artists' colony at the gates of Paris. His father was a successful patissier (pastry chef) and a town councillor and Derain was given a middle-class education. By the time he was forty, he was one of the most successful painters in Paris. But by the end of World War II, Derain's name usually came up only to be dismissed with a shrug.
One of the original "wild beasts" (Fauves), he has been difficult to appraise; but at its best, his work has also been almost impossible not to like. Only seemingly did Derain belong with his contemporaries; essentially he was a traditionalist. The trauma of his years in the trenches had turned him toward what is timeless.
Derain's father was prosperous enough to want his son to have the most respectable of careers, preferably engineering. But Andre was already painting, and his best friend was the young ruffian Maurice Vlaminck, whom Papa Derain would not let into the house. Then one day an older painter by the name of Henri Matisse saw some of Andre's work, spoke so glowingly of his talents and prospects that Derain's father finally relented. Maurice and Andre rented a shack on an island in the Seine and their careers finally began.
In 1906 Derain met Picasso and soon afterward signed a contract with Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler, Picasso's dealer. He married on the strength of his new financial security and with his wife, Alice, went to live in Montmartre, where his friendship with Picasso continued. He and Alice made a remarkable couple; he was described as slim, elegant, with an English chic and she as being calm and beautiful.
