This haven for nature has been cut for hay for over a thousand years and is one of the most species rich sites in the country. The left hand painting shows the bobbly purple brown flower heads of great burnet - an important indicator of an ancient meadow - and the right hand painting has the fuzzy creamy-white flowers of astilbe - a water-loving plant. I chose a delicate palette of pastel pinks, yellows and greens for this pretty wildflower meadow, to create the hazy shades of a bright summer's day. Yellow rattle is an important species in wildflower meadows as it suppresses the growth of too much grass and thereby allows more flowering plants to thrive. The seedpods rattle when you shake them! They made such an impression on me that I had to paint them. Several times, in fact, and there is a companion piece to this which would work very well in the same room - its dimensions are the same but whilst this one is portrait , the other is landscape proportion, so they might fit two different sized spaces. The dazzling display of white ox-eye daisies in a lay-by down a country lane, which caught my eye one sunny summer afternoon made such an impression on me that I had to paint them, not once but twice in fact. Here are two companion pieces - their dimensions are the same but whilst this one is portrait (height 150cm x width 120cm) the other is landscape proportion (height 120cm x width 150cm), so they can fit two different sized spaces. It's not possible to add the total width and total height to give the total area as they don't form a rectangle when placed side by side in their correct orientation.
