LES BAS-BLEUS (The bluestockings) is a series of 40 numbered lithographs, which appeared in the Charivari between January 30, 1844 and August 7, 1844. ALBUM LES BAS-BLEUS. The series (“Les Bas-Bleus”) proved to be of such a success with the public, that apart from the Charivari edition a separate edition was published on single white sheets and sold at an up-market price to collectors. Apart from that, an album LES BAS-BLEUS was published in the same year (1844). ABOUT THIS PRINT. The Odéon theatre in Paris opened in 1797 and merged in 1946 with the Comédie Française. It reopened again in 1959 as an independent theatre under the name Théatre de France. This print shows an enthusiastic public applauding the author at the opening night. It seems that the female author had hidden behind a male name. The applause stops when the audience fully realizes the deception. This print can be seen in reference to George Sand's play "Cosima", which also had been rejected by the public under similar circumstances. BLUESTOCKINGS. The expression "Bluestocking” (or suffragette) dates back to 18th century England. At that time, angry young gentlemen of society met in London at the Montague House to discuss literary and political questions of their time. As a sign of protest against the establishment they wore blue wool-socks instead of black silk stockings. The expression was taken over by 19th century France to ridicule the new movement carried by Jeanne Désirée (1832), Cécile Fourmel, Suzanne Vailquin, and Claire Demar. Original Egypt Fly TWA vintage poster. Artist: David Klein. Linen backed in excellent condition, grade A. Ready to frame. A camel head dominates the image with a very colorful tassel-decorated harness. Beautifully contrasting with the clear blue sky and the TWA airplane. David Klein does not sign the poster. It was produced during the Israeli and Egyptian conflict going on at the time. He produced the artwork for the posters, but all posters going to Egypt remained unsigned. TWA (Trans World Airlines) was formed in 1924 as Transcontinental & Western Air. The airline's first route was from New York to Los Angeles, followed by multiple National routes. The airline expanded to serve Europe, the Middle East, and Asia after WWII when the company was under Howard Hughes's owner's control from 1939 until 1961. Hughes was a dominant force in expanding and promoting his company's routes. The economy was vastly improving, and travel by air for business and pleasure increased, too. Posters were a crucial element in promoting this form of travel and TWA. The airline started a decline in the 1970s that ended up in a third bankruptcy that caused its acquisition by American Airlines in 2001. The airline operated in 132 destinations worldwide and had a fleet size of 190. This Rome poster was created by the gifted American artist David Klein (1918 -2005), and depicts a member of the Pontifical Swiss Guard in the center wearing the iconic yellow, blue, and red uniform. "Meeting Plaza" is a place where people from all over the world are always welcome to meet in peace and enjoyment; an exquisite 25-color limited edition silkscreen done in collaboration with master printer Gary Lichtenstein. The work is evocative of New York's Rockefeller Center and the United Nations, but the flags are abstracted, to emphasize international unity, rather than single out any individual country. The artist explained: "I wanted to convey a city that welcomed all nationalities and all people… The flags for me are a counterpoint to the city’s geometric architecture, and their suggested movement and irregular shapes echo the organic morphology of the people below. I painted an evening sky. It is dusk. Nobody is rushing. People are conversing with each other, walking slowly or gathering in small groups enjoying a calm evening in the New York City…I, too, am one of the people converging at the 'Meeting Plaza' ...” Other examples of "Meeting Plaza" were exhibited in the 2021 show "New York and No Place Else: Art that Celebrates New York" at the Chashama Foundation, New York, and the print was featured in the invitational exhibition "Women on Paper" in April, 2021 at the Sager Reeves Gallery in Columbia, Missouri. Thelma Appel biography A co-founder of the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, Thelma Appel is a representational and abstract painter who has been working and teaching for more than six decades. Most recently, she was subject of a 50-year career survey (October, 2019 -February 2020) at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont, entitled Thelma Appel: Abstract/Observed curated by Mara Williams, and she exhibited at the Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut which acquired one of her fabric collages for their permanent collection. Thelma Appel was raised in Darjeeling, India and educated in London, England, at St. Martin's School of Art (now Central St. Martins) and Hornsey College of Art before emigrating to the United States in the 1960s. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues, including the Bennington Museum, the Berkshire Museum in North Adams, Mass., the Children's Museum of the Arts in New York City, the Mattatuck Museum, the Brattleboro Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont and the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts Gallery. In 1974 she was awarded a YADDO Fellowship, and in 1975, Thelma Appel, along with the painter Carol Haerer, co-founded the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, where many distinguished painters of the day, both abstract and representational, conducted master classes. Among them were Neil Welliver, John Button, Alice Neel, Larry Poons, Friedel Dzubas, Stanley Boxer, Elizabeth Murray and Doug Ohlson – a program that continued until 1980. She has also taught drawing at Parsons School of Design, painting at Southern Vermont College and at the University of Connecticut.
