Victor Isbrand Paintings
Danish, 1897-1989
Precocious as a child, Victor Isbrand painted seriously from a young age and was invited to exhibit at the 1915 Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition two years before graduating from the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts. Throughout a long career, he was the recipient of numerous prestigious national scholarships and stipends including the Ronge (1917), the Charlottenborg Art Academy (1919–20) and the State Art Foundation Scholarship (1978–88). Isbrand exhibited widely and with success, including annually at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg, where he exhibited continuously for over 70 years. He was also the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including the 1919 Charlottenberg gold medal for Aphrodite and Eros. Initially influenced by Cubism, Isbrand traveled abroad to Java and the East, exploring Primitivism and Orientalism as his style developed. He also visited and painted in Siam, Malacca, China, Japan, Paris, Greenland and Southern Europe before accepting a teaching post at the School of Applied Arts in Copenhagen where his theories influenced an entire generation of Danish Modernists. Victor Isbrand's works are held in private and public collections including the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark

From the beginning of his career it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagne to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France.

Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors."
Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work.
