Circa 1935

About the Item

Signed lower left, 'V. Isbrand' for Victor Isbrand (Danish, 1897-1989) and painted circa 1935. Precocious as a child, Victor Isbrand painted professionally from a young age and was invited to exhibit at the 1915 Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, a full two years before his graduation from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Over the course of a long career, he was the recipient of various national scholarships and stipends including the Ronge (1917), the Charlottenborg Art Academy (1919-1920) and the State Art Foundation Scholarship (1978-1988). Isbrand exhibited widely and with success including, for over seventy years, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle Charlottenborg. He was also the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including the Charlottenborg Gold Medal for 'Aphrodite and Eros' (1919). Initially influenced by Cubism, Isbrand developed his mature style over a prolonged period spent painting in in the East where he explored the roots of both Primitivism and Orientalism. In Java, he stayed for two years near the temple of Borobudur, which inspired many young artists in search of a perceived lost simplicity in life and art. From these studies, Isbrand derived both landscape and figurative motifs which he used for several years after his return, moving towards a more realistic style of painting. He developed this style further during his time in Paris in the 1920’s and a major work from this period shows students at the Croquisskole sketching school in Paris, where he has captured the colorful, international crowd at this famous art school. Isbrand traveled and painted widely, including in Siam, Malacca, China, Japan, France, Greenland and Southern Europe before returning to Denmark to where he accepted a teaching post at Copenhagen's School of Applied Arts. Here, he became a leading proponent of Modernism and his elegant articulation of Modernist art theory came to influence an entire generation of Danish painters. Victor Isbrand's works are held in private and public collections worldwide including the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark. Reference: E. • 'Still Life of Daffodils', Paris Modernist, Royal Danish Academy, Charlottenborg
    By Viggo Rorup
    Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1963. Exhibited: 'Copenhagen Art Association Exhibition, 1964', from exhibition stamp, verso, on stretcher bar. A substantial and vibrant Post-Impressionist still-life showing a profusion of fresh-cut daffodils informally arranged in a jade-green vase and set on a table in a sitting-room. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they founded the avante-garde group of artists named The Corner, which first introduced the principles of European Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and, most importantly, to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a great stylistic impact on his later work. As Rorup continued to paint in the south of France, his palette grew brighter and the earlier, more defined, contours of his forms became subsumed into scintillating nuances of light. We are pleased to offer this elegant and dazzling still-life from the artist's late period. The work depicts a ceramic vase placed on a wooden stall filled with pink peonies and yellow flowers. A beautiful piece in the artist's distinctive hand. Signature: Signed: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 24"x21" Unframed: 16"x13" Provenance: To be included in the forthcoming Georges d’Espagnat Catalogue Raisonné being prepared by Jean-Dominique Jacquemond. From the beginning of his career it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagne to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France. In 1903, d'Espagne was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont...
