Victor Isbrand'Still Life with Imari Bowl', Paris, Post-Impressionist Oil, Royal AcademyCirca 1935
Circa 1935
About the Item
Signed upper right, 'V. Isbrand' for Victor Isbrand (Danish, 1897-1989) and painted circa 1935.
A vibrant Post-Impressionist still-life showing golden marigolds and white daisies informally arranged in a porcelain jug, set beside a Japanese Imari bowl and contrasted against a printed Indian textile.
Precocious as a child, Victor Isbrand painted professionally from a young age and was invited to exhibit at the 1915 Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, a full two years before his graduation from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Over the course of a long career, he was the recipient of various national scholarships and stipends including the Ronge (1917), the Charlottenborg Art Academy (1919-1920) and the State Art Foundation Scholarship (1978-1988). Isbrand exhibited widely and with success including, for over seventy years, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle Charlottenborg. He was also the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including the Charlottenborg Gold Medal for 'Aphrodite and Eros' (1919).
Initially influenced by Cubism, Isbrand developed his mature style over a prolonged period spent painting in in the East where he explored the roots of both Primitivism and Orientalism. In Java, he stayed for two years near the temple of Borobudur, which inspired many young artists in search of a perceived lost simplicity in life and art. From these studies, Isbrand derived both landscape and figurative motifs which he used for several years after his return, moving towards a more realistic style of painting. He developed this style further during his time in Paris in the 1920’s and a major work from this period shows students at the Croquisskole sketching school in Paris, where he has captured the colorful, international crowd at this famous art school. Isbrand traveled and painted widely, including in Siam, Malacca, China, Japan, France, Greenland and Southern Europe before returning to Denmark to where he accepted a teaching post at Copenhagen's School of Applied Arts. Here, he became a leading proponent of Modernism and his elegant articulation of Modernist art theory came to influence an entire generation of Danish painters. Victor Isbrand's works are held in private and public collections worldwide including the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark.

- 'Roses with a Quimper Plate', Paris, Salon d’Automne, Fauve, Section d'OrBy Jais NielsenLocated in Santa Cruz, CASigned lower right 'Jais' for Jais Nielsen (Danish, 1885-1961) and dated 1913. An early twentieth-century, oil still-life of pink dog-roses shown loosely arranged in a cobalt blue glass vase, set beside two Breton tin-glazed earthenware plates, resting on an azure-turquoise tablecloth and contrasted against a coral-ochre background. An elegant, early work by this foundational Danish Modernist. Born in Denmark, Jais Nielsen initially studied at Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler under Kristian Zahrtmann and exhibited for the first time at the 1907 Autumn Salon at the Charlottenborg Palace. Nielsen participated in the early and groundbreaking, “Group of Thirteen" Modernist show, where his focus on dynamic figural painting and his bold use of color set him dramatically apart from his contemporaries. From 1907-11, Nielsen's use of 'primitive' Fauve colors would continue to reinforce his break with traditional Danish painting. During this period, he made study excursions to important art centres, including, in 1909, to Berlin. In 1911, he moved to Paris where he settled in the Latin Quarter near the Musée Cluny. His first formal Paris exhibition was at the Salon d’Automne of 1912. During this first Paris period, Nielsen attended meetings of the Section d’Or at the studio of Jacques Villon and, as a result, began to incorporate subtle, yet distinct, Cubist elements into his work. With the outbreak of World War One, Nielsen returned to Copenhagen, taking with him both his increasing compositional sophistication and a thorough understanding of the principles of Modernism. During this period, ports, dance and circus life became subjects of interest and he painted many canvases in the style of Analytic Cubism, of which he became the earliest and, arguably, the finest Danish exponent. From 1915 onwards, Nielsen also created Cubist sculptures and, from 1922-28, was employed as a sculptor by the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory. Here, he produced a series of ceramic sculptures on Biblical themes which included the Good Samaritan and several versions of Jacob Wrestling with the Angel...Category

- 'Still Life of Daffodils', Paris Modernist, Royal Danish Academy, CharlottenborgBy Viggo RorupLocated in Santa Cruz, CASigned lower right, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1963. Exhibited: 'Copenhagen Art Association Exhibition, 1964', from exhibition stamp, verso, on stretcher bar. A substantial and vibrant Post-Impressionist still-life showing a profusion of fresh-cut daffodils informally arranged in a jade-green vase and set on a table in a sitting-room. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they founded the avante-garde group of artists named The Corner, which first introduced the principles of European Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and, most importantly, to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a great stylistic impact on his later work. As Rorup continued to paint in the south of France, his palette grew brighter and the earlier, more defined, contours of his forms became subsumed into scintillating nuances of light. We are pleased to offer this elegant and dazzling still-life from the artist's late period.
