Ettore Cosomati (Naples 1871 - Milan 1960)
Still life of Marigolds with lemons and pipe
Oil on canvas in gilded frame
Size: 53 x 45 cm (73 x 64 cm including frame)
Epoch: the painting has a customs mark dated 1928, which circumscribes its era between 1912 (the period when he approached oil painting) and 1928
Ettore Cosomati was born in Naples where he lived until the age of ten in a small hamlet and then moved in with his uncle Filippo Cosomati. In 1894 he began his wanderings around Europe. In Paris, where he later returned several times, he mainly frequented the milieu of musicians. In 1895 he moved to Germany where he began his artistic career, at first devoting himself only to drawing. Very frequent, however, were the trips he made during that period through Germany, to Paris and Italy. Between 1897 and 1898 he studied at Bernhard Mannfeld's school where he learned the technique of etching. It was while working at Mannfeld's studio that Cosomati made the acquaintance of William Ritter, an art critic, who became interested in his work and advised him to continue working independently. His first tempera paintings date from 1909, and around 1912 he began to devote himself to oil painting, first using the brush and then the palette knife. Between 1896 and 1914 he was present at the Munich International Exhibition at the Glass Palace, exhibited his works in a number of group shows in Frankfurt and other cities in Germany. In 1904 he participated in the St. Louis World's Fair. In 1923 he had his first solo exhibition in Milan at the rooms of Bottega di poesia. In the same year he participated in the 2nd Roman Biennale, presenting twenty paintings, still lifes and landscapes. He remained in London until 1939 where he produced numerous city views. During the London period, he organized with his son Aldo the English section at the second Monza Biennale (the future Triennale) in 1925; in 1934, he was also invited to participate in the 19th Venice Biennale.
In 1940 he was in Italy: in fact, since the previous year he had been unable to return to London due to the outbreak of World War II. In Milan Cosomati remained until his death in 1960, on the eve of the opening of his last exhibition at the Palazzo Reale. The works of Cosomati, whose favorite subjects were mainly landscapes, still lifes and portraits, can be found in numerous Italian and foreign private collections and in a number of European museums, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Galleria d'arte moderna in Milan, and the Gabinetto nazionale delle stampe in Rome.

A descendant of the painting dynasty headed by the Austrian Andrea Markò, he painted a series of works between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that were characterized by skillful scenic layout: rare seascapes of the Ligurian Riviera, luminous and highly detailed in execution, numerous wooded landscapes, sometimes enlivened by figurines, and frequent views of cities such as Florence, Rome, Genoa, and Sestri Levante...Category
