A fine vintage rectangular porcelain ashtray (suitable for use as a vide-poche or trinket tray) manufactured by Hermès Paris during the 1980s. Iconography and Design: The central well features a detailed polychrome illustration of a male mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) floating on water, displaying its characteristic emerald-green head and blue wing speculum specile. Drawing inspiration from the traditional hunting and equestrian themes of Hermès' historic silk carré scarves, the design extends onto the flared inner rims with delicate, symmetrical arrangements of marsh reeds and cattails. The upper rim is enhanced by a hand-applied fine gilt edge, interrupted by two parallel side indents serving as cigarette rests. Markings and Authenticity: The piece displays the standard authentication markings for Hermès porcelain production from the late 20th century: Underside (Side A): Heat-stamped in gold capital letters with the copyright symbol: "HERMÈS - PARIS ©". Underside (Side B): Country of origin mark "Made in France" printed in gold script font.
