This fine clock set is crafted in patinated bronze, red marble and ornamented throughout with exquisite ormolu. It is the work of Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie, a French company highly celebrated for their superlative clock sets and garnitures. The set comprises a central clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock is set on an oval plinth of red marble with ormolu feet. To the front of the plinth is set a relief panel in patinated bronze. Upon the plinth is set a fluted column of patinated bronze with ormolu flowers and banding, surmounted by an ormolu urn. The circular clock dial is set to the front of the column, with a face of red marble and Roman numerals in ormolu. Next to the clock face column stands the full length figure of the Greek goddess of hunting, Diana, holding a torch cast in patinated bronze. The pair of flanking candelabra are set on square plinths of red marble with canted angles and ormolu feet. Atop this are set fluted columns of patinated bronze, and an ovoid urn with relief panels with reliefs of classical figures on the main body and twin ormolu handles. These magnificent candelabra were cast entirely of gilt bronze in the French Empire period of the early 19th century. Each candelabrum is formed as a cornucopia of scrolled branches holding four lights with drip pans, set on a single torch-form stem, held aloft by a Classical style figure. The figures, one male and one female, are shown draped in swathed clothing, with the male figure depicted holding a quill in his other hand, whilst the female figure clutches a delicate bouquet of flowers. The figures stand upon circular bases, set onto ovoid vases which featured fluted details and central bands of laurel leaf motifs. The vases themselves stand on undulating roundels formed of acanthus leaves, which are further set atop square-form plinths. Classically influenced works were popular during the French Empire period, when the Emperor Napoleon I sought to create a place in history for France alongside the ancient dynasties...

A quite superb pair of French Louis XVIth transitional ormolu and white marble figural candelabra. Set on a square ormolu base with white marble socle. Each figure beautifully sculpted and hand finished by the Graveur after the fire gilding process. Both boy and girl hold an ormolu flower pot in which are two ormolu candle holders in the form of tulips. While unsigned, the form may be attributed to Prieur . Very fine condition with superb and original fire/mercury gilt ormolu and retaining hand cut screws and threads. Circa 1770. 16 inches tall by 4 inches square at base. Prieur was accepted as a sculptor in the Académie de Saint-Luc, Paris, in 1765 and became a master bronze-caster and chaser in 1769. In 1766 he collaborated with Victor Louis and Philippe Caffiéri.
