Belle Époque Period Ormolu and Porcelain Mantel Clock in Moorish Style

Located in London, GB

This beautiful clock, formed from gilt bronze and porcelain, is designed and decorated in a discernibly Moorish style. The clock is supported by a flat shaped gilt bronze base, the base supporting four gilt bronze columns that support the gilt bronze clock drum. The cylindrical drum contains a circular dial, the dial of porcelain and inscribed with Roman numerals. The gilt bronze throughout is cast and chased with geometrical motifs—particularly evident on the front of the four vertical columns. These motifs are distinctively Moorish in scheme, the lattice-type geometrical sequences recalling Islamic decorative...

Austrian Art Deco Bronze Sculpture Mantel Clock by Anton Grath circa 1925

By Anton Grath

Located in Shippensburg, PA

ART DECO FIGURAL MANTEL CLOCK Anton Grath (Austrian, b. 1881) patinated and burnished bronze over marble signed "Anton Grath" and foundry marking monogrammed "HW" within an "H" to right side of base Circa 1925 Item # 203AXG01W A powerful figural clock of a partially nude male and female raising offerings of a laurel wreath and an empty vessel, they face one another before the bold architectural display of the clock flanked by coned finials. They are loosely symmetrical in garb, the burnished bronze capes flowing gently around and before them. The circular face of the clock rests on a pair of sleeping lions over a textured bronze rectangular plinth with a burnished bronze bas-relief of a young woman lying in the grasses of a setting sun raised on a variated marble base. This model was acquired formerly at the Sotheby's, New York sale on April 14th 2008, [Sale N08427, lot 155, achieved $ 5,000 USD] and the patina was enhanced at some point in the last fourteen years to include the parcel-burnished highlights in the figures. The right side of the base includes the signature and a monogrammed foundry mark (HW within an H). A very fine period example. Artist Listings & Bibliography: *E. Large French Gilt Bronze Figural Mantel Clock by Les Japy Fils, 1850s

By Japy Frères

Located in SANT ADRIÀ DE BESÒS, ES

An impressive French mantel clock dating to the mid-19th century, featuring an elegant combination of richly gilt bronze and finely patinated bronze. The sculptural composition depicts a young boy seated on horseback, raising a riding crop while gently holding the reins. Set upon a naturalistic rocky landscape with foliage and a bird, the finely modelled group rises above an elaborate Rococo Revival gilt-bronze clock case adorned with scrolling acanthus, flowers, grape clusters and gardening attributes. The beautifully pierced gilt-bronze case frames a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, creating a striking contrast with the dark patinated sculpture above. The original gilt surface remains exceptionally vibrant and well preserved, giving the clock remarkable visual presence. The movement bears the original “Les Japy Fils – Médaille d’Argent 1844 et 1849” award medallion. Founded by Frédéric Japy in 1777, the Japy workshops became one of the foremost manufacturers of French clock movements during the nineteenth century. The medallion commemorates the silver medals awarded to the firm at the French National Industrial Expositions of 1844 and 1849 and supports a manufacture date after 1849. The movement has been tested for more than twenty-four hours and is currently running correctly. Both the timekeeping and striking functions operate properly at the time of cataloguing. The clock is accompanied by its original winding key, a later pendulum and removable rear brass cover. A substantial and highly decorative French mantel clock that combines excellent sculptural quality, beautifully preserved gilding and a documented Les Japy Fils movement, making it an outstanding display piece for both traditional and eclectic interiors. Details: Dimensions: Height: 46 cm (18.1 in.); Width: 36 cm (14.2 in.); Depth: 14 cm (5.5 in.). Condition: Good antique condition. The movement has been tested for more than twenty-four hours and is currently running correctly, with both the timekeeping and striking functions operating properly at the time of cataloguing. The gilt bronze retains an excellent appearance with only light age-related wear. The white enamel dial has one fine hairline crack and a tiny edge chip. The riding crop held by the boy appears to have a small loss to its tip. Historic repairs and soldering are visible to the rear feet and within the back of the case. These repairs are stable, the clock stands securely, and they are largely invisible during normal display. Later pendulum. Original winding key and removable rear brass cover included. As with all antique mechanical clocks...

A refined French mantel clock garniture set executed in gilt bronze and white stone, dating to the 19th century. The ensemble consists of a central pendulum clock accompanied by a matching pair of decorative urns. The architectural composition with classical columns reflects the neoclassical taste characteristic of French decorative arts of the period. The clock features an enamel dial with black numerals and finely shaped hands, housed within a cylindrical case suspended between two columns. The case is adorned with cast gilt bronze mounts incorporating floral and classical decorative motifs, while the pendulum is decorated with a sun mask motif. The accompanying urns echo the design language of the clock, combining white stone bodies with gilt bronze mounts and twin handles, creating a balanced three-piece composition suitable for mantel or console display. Attribution and dating remain based on stylistic characteristics visible in the set. The exact stone type has not been professionally tested.
