This wonderful clock set, which is comprised of a mantel clock and pair of flanking vases, is designed in a fanciful French ‘Oriental’ style. The set is crafted from brass which has been silvered, parcel gilt and painted. The clock is also mounted with porcelain plaques which are beautifully painted with colourful depictions of birds and flowers. The mantel clock is composed of a tall rectangular body with a break arch top which is crowned by a covered twin-handled urn. The urn features a parcel gilt pointed finial on its cover and a silvered body painted with pink cherry blossoms. The urn stands on the arched top of the clock, which is decorated with a sculptural gilt scrollwork band and a gilt foliate border. The arch contains a circular porcelain dial which features a central painting of a pair of birds, encircled by black Roman Numerals within white cartouches. This dial is framed by a gilt beaded bezel. The shoulders of the clock body are mounted with parcel gilt and silvered elephant heads holding ring handles. Porcelain panels decorate the front and sides of the silvered clock body. These panels are beautifully decorated with paintings of colourful birds, butterflies and cherry blossom trees, set within gilt stiff-leaf frames. The clock body is set on a silvered rectangular base which is edged with a parcel gilt foliate band. The front of the base is mounted with a silvered and parcel gilt lion's head mask and flanking painted porcelain plaques. A highly unusual and richly conceived three-piece clock garniture, probably French and dating from the late 19th century, comprising a substantial mantel clock and a pair of matching five-light candelabra. The ensemble is distinguished by an exceptionally coherent decorative program centered on griffins and fantastical chimerical creatures. Sculptural griffin forms flank the body of the clock, further griffin heads appear beneath the lateral platforms, while a prominent fantastical mask forms the central element of the lower case. The same imagery is repeated throughout the hand-decorated porcelain panels, creating a remarkable visual relationship between the sculptural mounts and the ceramic decoration. The clock is surmounted by a large polychrome porcelain vessel held within an elaborate gilt-metal mount and decorated in a vivid palette of deep raspberry, turquoise, violet, red and gold. Similar colors and fantastical creatures appear throughout the numerous inset porcelain plaques and on the central dial. Individual black Roman-numeral cartouches surround the dial, contributing to the highly architectural character of the composition. The pair of tall matching candelabra continue the same elaborate decorative vocabulary, with five-light arrangements, scrolling branches, architectural finials, polychrome porcelain elements and griffin-form supports. Stylistically, the garniture belongs to the eclectic Historicist vocabulary of the later 19th century, combining Neo-Gothic and Renaissance Revival elements with a more exotic Orientalist or Japonisant sensibility. The pronounced use of fantastical animals, vivid color and elaborate architectural metalwork distinguishes the ensemble considerably from more conventional porcelain-mounted French clock garnitures of the period. Of particular interest, inspection of the porcelain components revealed at least three concealed handwritten inscriptions apparently reading “Gallé” on reverse or interior surfaces. These inscriptions are hidden once the components are assembled and appear to have served a workshop or production-related purpose. The inscriptions are recorded exactly as observed. No definitive documentary attribution to Émile Gallé or the Maison Gallé has presently been established, and any such attribution remains preliminary. Their repetition on several separate porcelain components is nevertheless noteworthy and merits further research. The garniture is exceptionally substantial in construction. The clock alone weighs approximately 10 kg, while each candelabrum weighs approximately 4 kg. The mechanical movement was tested continuously for approximately 24 hours prior to listing. During this test, the clock remained in operation and the striking mechanism functioned correctly. The movement was therefore found to be in good working order at the time of testing. This sophisticated gilt bronze mantel clock is an elegant piece of mid-19th century design, beautifully cast and gilded and set with two delicate Sèvres style porcelain panels. The clock case's finest feature is the charmingly naturalistic scene at its top, showing a full-length sculpture of a female figure sitting with a basket and two doves. They are displayed on a naturalistic, oval-shaped plinth, which is decorated all around its exterior with painstakingly intricate foliate motifs. Either side of the plinth there are two Sevres style porcelain panels, each of which shows a winged putto. One putto is shown writing, while the other is shown holding a dove. Each is set inside a turquoise blue border decorated with delicate gilt scrolls. In the centre of the plinth sits the clock dial, which is enamelled and contains Roman numerals. It is signed 'Prize Medal 1851 / Miroy Fres Brevetes / Paris' after the clock's maker, Miroy Freres...
