French Napoleon III Mantel Clock Signed E. Gleizes, Paris, 19th century
A charming and finely crafted French Napoleon III mantel clock dating from the third quarter of the 19th century, signed E. Gleizes, Rue de Rivoli, Paris.
The architectural case is executed in finely cast and chased gilt-finished bronze with richly detailed Louis XVI-inspired ornamentation, including floral garlands, scrolling foliage, ribbons, and a pair of birds surmounting the crest. The clock is raised on a white marble base embellished with decorative mounts.
The enamel dial, decorated with hand-painted floral garlands and blue Roman numerals, bears the retailer's signature E. Gleizes, Rue de Rivoli, Paris, identifying the prestigious Parisian marchand and decorator established at 240 Rue de Rivoli during the Second Empire period. Elegant pierced hands complete the composition.
