Alabaster sculpture designed and produced by Mario Urbani in 1930, Volterra. Single piece. Biography Urbani, Mario, architect, painter, artist, (Rome 1885 - Pesaro 1961), SIUSA Mario Urbani studied at the School of Fine Arts in Rome and attended the Architecture Course, graduating in 1909. He worked for three years as a technical draughtsman in the State Railways, then attended the Higher School of Painting of Aristide Sartorio, with whom he made, in 1910-11, some frescoes in the Parliament Hall that celebrated the history of Italy, whose sketches were exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1909. In the same years he worked alongside some Roman architects: Bazzani, Calderini, Garroni, Pazzi, Pio Piacentini, Pistrucci and Quaroni, contributing to the design of the pavilions for the Universal Exposition in Rome, in 1911, on the occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of Rome. In that year, after winning a national competition, he furnished the courthouse of Rome and also executed some frescoes, still extant, at the Viminale and the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce inspired by De Carolis, artist present in Rome at the end of the nineteenth century, beginning of the twentieth century. Soon after Urbani began his career as a teacher in Sant'Angelo in Vado, at the Zuccari School of Art. Rare Bronzes Depicting two Figures in Turkish Attire Possibly Suleiman the Magnificent at two different ages bronzes, alabaster bases Venice, early 17th century 19,5 x 6 x 5 cm These two rare bronze statuettes represent two figures dressed in elaborate "Turkish" attire. They are mounted on alabaster bases with bronze reliefs—one featuring the winged lion of Venice, and the other possibly symbolizing Turkey with a wolf depiction. One figure wears a grand külah, a spherical turban with a cone top, signifying royal authority, while the other has a wrapped turban, denoting rank and religious identity. Their garments are richly detailed with intricate engravings, suggesting luxurious fabrics of the Ottoman court. The statuettes may represent Suleiman the Magnificent at two different stages of life, as both young and old. The sultan depicted alongside the winged lion corresponds to a description from a Venetian delegate in 1534, when Suleiman was 43. At that time, he had conquered Iraq from the Safavids and achieved a decisive victory over the Papal fleet at the Battle of Preveza. He was described as having large eyes, an aquiline nose, and long red mustaches—traits visible in Cristofano dell'Altissimo’s portrait of Suleiman in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. 19th century Pair of desks with portraits of Petrarch and Leonardo (2) Alabaster, 34 and 35 cm diam The pair of alabaster discs features a central cameo with the effigy of Petrarch and Leonardo, probably part of a larger series that featured illustrious characters from Italian history. On the openwork frame of Petrarch there are portraits of some characters who face each other, combined for centuries, as can be seen from the shapes of the garments that span several centuries: from the thirteenth century, in which men wear long-tipped bonnets, to the fifteenth century and Sixteenth century, the two characters at the top, in the seventeenth century, with wide collars, up to the eighteenth century. Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) embodies the figure of the humanist intellectual par excellence, entirely dedicated to the study of Latin conceived as the only form of expression worthy of a man of letters, so as to serve any form of written communication, including letters and the reflection on himself witnessed in the Secretum. A personality made more complex by obsessive perfectionism, which led him to a continuous and infinite editing of the work which he also flaunted to consider as minor and which instead ensured him an undying fame among posterity, the Canzoniere. But the only aspect fixed in the collective imagination is that of the lover who idolizes the places where his ideal love blossomed...
