Medieval English Alabaster Statue
Medieval English Alabaster Statue

Medieval English Alabaster Statue

Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire

A medieval English alabaster statue, possibly dating as far back as the late 14th / early 15th century, mounted on one of our exclusive large display plinths. Well weathered over the centuries, this 600-year-old statue depicts a medieval cloaked figure, possibly a monk, offering a glimpse into English architecture and sculpture of the Middle Ages. This sculpture is possibly made from Nottingham alabaster. During the 14th and 15th centuries, Nottingham was the centre of alabaster carving and painting. Alabaster works were mostly made as small alabaster models with religious themes. During the 16th century Reformation, many alabaster carvings were destroyed under King Henry VIII's rule, making any surviving examples even more significant. Provenance From the collection of Peter Hone (b. 1941). A master plaster caster, he is an expert and experienced collector, building up an extraordinary, museum-worthy collection of items in his one-bedroom flat in London W11...

PAIR OF ANTIQUE ITALIAN ANTONIO CANOVA CORCORAN GALLERY OF ART WASHINGTON LIONs
PAIR OF ANTIQUE ITALIAN ANTONIO CANOVA CORCORAN GALLERY OF ART WASHINGTON LIONs

PAIR OF ANTIQUE ITALIAN ANTONIO CANOVA CORCORAN GALLERY OF ART WASHINGTON LIONs

Located in West Sussex, Pulborough

Royal House Antiques Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this extremely collectable pair of original Antique Circa 1880 Italian Grand Tour Alabaster Recumbent Lions after the original huge statues by Antonio Canova and as displayed in the Corcoran gallery of Art in Washington These are original examples not later copies, they have a stunning antique patina and look expensive and important in any setting Grand tour pieces were purchased by young men and women in high society when they finished their studies, they would go on a "Grand Tour" around Europe visiting the sites and collecting trinkets, these trinkets could be very small such as ingots, or if you were fabulously wealthy they would be much larger and heavier like these lions About Tomb of Pope Clement XIII The artwork, titled “Tomb of Pope Clement XIII,” is a sculpture created by Antonio Canova in 1792. Belonging to the Neoclassicism art movement, this masterpiece exemplifies the genre of sculpture. In the artwork, Canova masterfully arranges various sculptural elements to create a poignant and regal composition. The tomb consists of a carved effigy of Pope Clement XIII, situated in a reverent pose atop an elaborately adorned sarcophagus. The Pope’s figure is cloaked in flowing garments, kneeling in prayer, signifying his piety. Below, two imposing lions flank the monument, symbolizing strength and vigilance. An angelic figure, wings partially spread, gazes downwards with a sorrowful expression, embodying the eternal mourning for the departed. Adjacent to the angel, a robed woman stands, her somber posture accentuating the tomb’s solemn atmosphere. The architectural framework, with its towering columns and vaulted arch, adds to the grandeur and reverence of the entire composition, upholding the Neoclassical ideals of symmetry, order, and monumental form. Later in life the Canova Lions were replicated, they are located in front of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C, these were cast in bronze from molds of the originals. The pieces were installed in 1860 This pair as mentioned are sublime, they really set the scene for a room, I've had a pair on the top of my piano for years with a large Tiffany lamp...

French Alabaster Monkey Sculpture, Napoleon III Style, 19th Century
French Alabaster Monkey Sculpture, Napoleon III Style, 19th Century

French Alabaster Monkey Sculpture, Napoleon III Style, 19th Century

Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR

A charming French alabaster sculpture created in France during the late 19th century, this delightful work depicts a monkey quietly smoking a pipe, blending humor, craftsmanship, and remarkable naturalism. Animalier subjects enjoyed great popularity during the Belle Époque, and this sculpture perfectly captures the era's fascination with expressive animals rendered with lifelike detail and refined artistic quality. Expertly carved from fine alabaster, the sculpture features beautifully modeled fur, expressive facial features, and a relaxed pose that gives the monkey an unmistakable sense of personality. The realistic glass eyes bring the figure to life, creating an engaging focal point that reflects the exceptional attention to detail characteristic of French sculptors of the period. The warm tones and translucent quality of the alabaster further enhance the elegance and sculptural depth of the composition. Measuring 9.8 inches high (25 cm), 6.7 inches wide (17 cm), and 4.4 inches deep (11.2 cm), this sculpture is perfectly sized for display on a desk, library shelf, mantel, or cabinet. It remains in good antique condition, with only minor scratches and small chips to the base that are consistent with its age and do not detract from its overall beauty or decorative appeal. Whimsical animal sculptures...

Two rare Figures in Turkish Attire - Venice, early 17th century

Two rare Figures in Turkish Attire - Venice, early 17th century

Located in Bruxelles, BE

Rare Bronzes Depicting two Figures in Turkish Attire Possibly Suleiman the Magnificent at two different ages bronzes, alabaster bases Venice, early 17th century 19,5 x 6 x 5 cm These two rare bronze statuettes represent two figures dressed in elaborate "Turkish" attire. They are mounted on alabaster bases with bronze reliefs—one featuring the winged lion of Venice, and the other possibly symbolizing Turkey with a wolf depiction. One figure wears a grand külah, a spherical turban with a cone top, signifying royal authority, while the other has a wrapped turban, denoting rank and religious identity. Their garments are richly detailed with intricate engravings, suggesting luxurious fabrics of the Ottoman court. The statuettes may represent Suleiman the Magnificent at two different stages of life, as both young and old. The sultan depicted alongside the winged lion corresponds to a description from a Venetian delegate in 1534, when Suleiman was 43. At that time, he had conquered Iraq from the Safavids and achieved a decisive victory over the Papal fleet at the Battle of Preveza. He was described as having large eyes, an aquiline nose, and long red mustaches—traits visible in Cristofano dell'Altissimo’s portrait of Suleiman in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Unlike Mehmed II, who commissioned portraits by European artists for diplomatic purposes, Suleiman did not directly order such representations. Instead, his likeness spread through works by artists like Albrecht Dürer, based on sketches made by diplomats. Following his capture of Belgrade in 1521, his victory over Hungary in 1526, and his siege of Vienna...
