Vintage ceramic bud vase features sculptural multi spouted shape and stunning textured drip glaze in earthy, organic brown palette. The gradation glaze color and abstract graphic pattern of the main decor emphasize the soft, rounded shape of the vase; the use of shades of brown, from dark espresso to mocha to off-shite cappuccino, creates rich and varied, but monochromatic palette that does not overpower the complex form and shape of the vase.
The vase is signed on the bottom with LEE, that was Lee Levy customary signature; it is not dated, but the style of the piece is consistent with her Mid-Century Modern pieces created in 1960s-1970s.
Leah "Lee" Levy (1922 - 2011) was an established pottery artist based in Upstate New York area. She was born in Pinsk, formerly in Poland, now in Belarus, and moved to the United States in 1929, growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts. She and her husband Irving started their first pottery studio in Long Island, New York, in late 1940s, while training at the Alfred University School of Ceramics alongside with some of the foremost artists and craftsman in America. Since 1946, Alfred University in Alfred, New York was a home for School for American Craftsmen, with the faculty that included Edwin Blanchard Brown, Ernest Frank Brace, Laurits Eichner, Philip Morton, Charles Reese, Ethel Mitchell, Robert Savage, Thomas Mclure, and most importantly for Levy, the renowned ceramists Linn Phelan and Herbert Sanders...

A massive stoneware tsubo floor jar created by Japanese contemporary ceramic artist Kai Tsujimura (1976-). The heavy jar with its impressive volume was made in the tradition of Iga ware with local coarse sandy clay that turned reddish after the firing. It took its shape from heavy medieval storage jars with a wide-open mouth. For a nearly identical form, see an Echizen jar from Heian period (794–1185) in the collection of MET (Accession Number: 1977.261). The surface showcases scattered white crystalized feldspars and a green vitrified ash glaze cascade down the body (known as biidoro in Japanese - after the Portuguese word for glass vidoro). These is a globular shape impressed on the jar. CIBOURE pottery was founded in 1919 on the Basque coast by Etienne Vilotte (1881-1957), Louis Benjamin Victor Floutier (1882-1936) and a man named LUKAS. In 1922, the date of the formal establishment of the company, Vilotte is the manager. From its inception, the style is clearly defined. A classical orientation, strongly imbued with the antique style and taking advantage of the neo-Greek wave. The characteristics of Art Deco are a source of inspiration as well as the regional style is an influence. The goal is clear: to offer high quality and decorative items whose forms are inherited from the ancient or traditional Basque containers. The sandstone reflects this enthusiasm for this growing area since the late 19th century.
In 1945, Rudolf Fischer bought the pottery on which it imposes its trademark in 1951 - RF CIBOURE - to replace the old - VE CIBOURE -. It will be replaced later by that of his son Max Fischer - MF CIBOURE -. He brings technical and artistic changes such as molding, baking more oxidizing and parts production utilities. This pottery owes its success, in addition to the decorative qualities and originality of its production, to an excellent marketing, particularly among Parisian department stores.
