BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Natural Water-Clear Quartz Tower Point from Diamantina, Brazil
Located in Ametista Do Sul, BR
Showcasing stunning aesthetics, this Clear Quartz Obelisk point features unparalleled water-clear transparency and highly skilled craftsmanship, making it a masterpiece of natural artistry. It is an AAA Crystal Point from Diamantina that not only brings beauty to your space but also serves as a captivating natural artwork that creates a captivating display of light and energy. This specimen is a highlight of the Clear Quartz Crystals found in Diamantina, Brazil. It was meticulously cut and polished to preserve the Quartz Crystal's integrity, a vital aspect of the crystals we offer here at E2D Crystals. We chose to only polish the natural point, leaving its natural point shape as it was found. The lapidary work applied to it is spotless, and Cerium Oxide was used in the final polishing process, granting this specimen a jewelry-like finish and shine. It is a natural work of art in the form of a Clear Quartz Crystal. Discovered in Diamantina, Brazil, a center of diamond mining during the 18th and 19th centuries, it now yields the most astonishingly super-clear, high-energy quartz in the world. Speaking about it, the vibrations feeling of this specimen are simply amazing! As it is super clear, capturing all its beauty can be challenging. Please check the pictures and the video to see more of it, and feel free to message us if you have any questions or specific requests. ▫️ Diamantina Crystal Quartz Point...

Natural Blue Lace Agate Geode Butterfly Wings with Amethyst and Landscaped Back
Located in Ametista Do Sul, BR
A fascinating agate geode that was cut open to show the world its internal beauty, this Agate Geode Wings combines world-class blue lace agate, purple amethyst druzy, and careful craftsmanship to become this spectacular natural artwork. Exceptional from every angle, for sure this Geode Wings will be an amazing addition collection or a conversation starter in your decor space. The Agate layer pattern that can be seen reveals the entire process of growth. For millions upon millions of years, it evolved, and in the middle of it, the Purple Amethyst Druzy showcased Nature's remarkable craftsmanship. The agate layers grow one after the other, and millions of years separate the first layer from the last one. We carefully polished this specimen to highlight its natural features. On its front, the blue and white agate lines contrast beautifully with the Purple Amethyst. Meanwhile, on the back, a landscape reminiscent of islands in the middle of the sea has taken shape. It is very important to highlight the fact that these Agate Butterfly Geodes...

Abraham Palatnik, Elephant, Kinetic Sculpture in Acrylic Resin, Brazil, C. 1960
By Abraham Palatnik
Located in PARIS, FR
Abraham Palatnik (1928-2020) Sculpture "Elephant", c. 1960 Vintage label (made in Brazil). Polyester resin and pigment in black. Kinetic art - Beautiful and rare polyester resin sculpture from the HOME AND FARM collection representing an elephant signed in the base. This sculpture is part of the series of animal sculptures that Abraham Palatnik made from the 1960s, in small format, they are small jewels of kinetic art, a movement of which he was one of the pioneers. "Born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in 1928 to a family of Russian Jews, Palatnik moved with his family to Tel Aviv (then Palestine) when he was four years old. He attended Montefiori Technical School, where he specialized in internal combustion engines, and studied art under the tutelage of the painter Haaron Avni and the sculptor Sternshus at the Municipal Institute of Art. When he returned to Brazil in 1948, his output consisted mainly of figurative and landscape paintings and charcoal drawings. However, his encounters with the complex works made by schizophrenic patients at the Pedro II Psychiatric Hospital, where he taught painting workshops alongside Almir Mavignier and Ivan Serpa, caused him to abandon his early approach to traditional image-making: “I decided to start all over from scratch,” Palatnik said. “The discipline from the school, the studio, was no longer of any use.” Freed from the perceived restrictions of his training, Palatnik became closely associated with Grupo Frente, a movement started by Serpa and rooted in geometric abstraction. He used his knowledge of engineering and mechanics as well as his interest in natural forces to build his first Kinechromatic work. Titled Azul e roxo em seu primeiro movimento (Blue and Purple in First Movement), 1949, the piece debuted at the inaugural São Paulo Bienal in 1951. “In reality, it was luck that got me into the biennial,” Palatnik said in a 1986 interview. “At first, my machine was rejected, because it wasn’t a painting, a sculpture, a drawing, or a print.” The piece, which eventually gained entry, shocked the biennial’s grand prize jury, who gave Palatnik an honorable mention, calling his work an “important manifestation of modern art.” By 1969, he had participated in seven more editions of the international exhibition. Palatnik would also present work in the 1964 Venice Biennale, the 1966 Biennial of Córdoba, and the 1997 and 2005 editions of the Mercosul Biennial. His art was featured in significant exhibitions on kinetic art, including “Mouvement 2” (1964) at Denise René gallery in Paris; “Lumière, Mouvement et Optique” (1965) at the Brussels Palace of Fine Arts; “Kinetic Art” (1966) at the Museum of San Francisco; and, more recently, “Delirious: Art at the Limits of Reason, 1950–1980” (2017) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and “The Other Trans-Atlantic: Kinetic & Op Art in Central & Eastern Europe and Latin America 1950s–1970s” (2018) at Sesc Pinheiros in São Paulo. A major retrospective, “Abraham Palatnik—The Reinvention of Painting,” was staged at several venues across Brazil, including the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil Rio de Janeiro (2017); the Fundação Iberê...

Gallery Grade Lemurian Crystal Cluster with Gray Dreamcoat Lithium Phantom
Located in Ametista Do Sul, BR
Straight from the famous Araçuaí-Itinga mines, this rare specimen is an all-natural Lemurian with a Lithium Crystal Cluster, bringing beautiful aesthetics as well as the energy of two exceptional crystal varieties in one remarkable piece. It is undoubtedly a specimen to add to your crystal collection or to become a powerful tool in your healing arsenal. The first thing that captures our attention is the aesthetic formation of the cluster, featuring the main crystal point surrounded by smaller, perfect points that add depth and complexity. This arrangement creates a sense of balance and symmetry, drawing the eye to the central, gorgeous point. Another standout feature of this specimen is the main point, enveloped by Lemurian lines that reveal intricate natural drawings. It showcases two distinguished sides: one with a naturally polished finish and the other with a natural matte texture. We've chosen to maintain the specimen 100% natural, exactly as it was found in the mine, that way you can see the perfection of the main point as well as the intact characteristics of the coadjutant points. Importantly, this Lemurian Cluster is not only a natural wonder but also ethically sourced. Ethical practices ensure that the crystal has been obtained in a responsible manner, considering the well-being of both the environment and the workers involved. Lithium inclusions within quartz crystals typically occur during the crystal formation process when lithium-rich fluids are present in the geological environment. In the case of phantoms like these, the lithium ghost-like outline was present in only one stage of the crystal growth, making this specimen even rarer. Overall, this Lemurian with Lithium Crystal Cluster represents an exceptional combination of size, aesthetics, and ethical sourcing. Please take a look at the pictures and video, and don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or specific requests. 🤍 ▫️ Gallery-Grade Natural Lemurian Crystal...
