Japanese Contemporary Blue Pink Platinum Porcelain Vase by Master Artist, 6
Japanese Contemporary Blue Pink Platinum Porcelain Vase by Master Artist, 6

Japanese Contemporary Blue Pink Platinum Porcelain Vase by Master Artist, 6

Located in Takarazuka, JP

Exquisite contemporary Japanese dimpled decorative porcelain vase, hand painted in vivid blue, green and pink on an elegantly shaped porcelain body against a striking platinum background, a signed piece by highly acclaimed award-winning Japanese master porcelain artist in the Imari-Arita tradition. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. The artist is the recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and his unique signature gold and platinum work on porcelain. This elegant vase is the perfect canvas for a stunning floral pattern, set against a dimpled platinum background. The artist continues the platinum work to decorate the inside of this magnificent piece. The unfired porcelain shell is impressed with hundreds of dimples, to which gold and platinum are applied at the final stage of production. The dimples are designed to accentuate the luster of the precious metals by varying the thickness of application and allowing the cratering to convey a sense of depth. “Fired-on gold,” his signature style, highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as five-ten firings. This artist's profile is available upon request. This stunning decorative porcelain vase showcases elegant Japanese toad...

Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Basket by Yamamoto Chikuryosai I Shoen
Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Basket by Yamamoto Chikuryosai I Shoen

Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Basket by Yamamoto Chikuryosai I Shoen

Located in Atlanta, GA

An important Japanese bamboo Ikebana basket by Yamamoto Chikuryosai I (also known as Chikuryusai I, Shoen after 1929) (1868-1945). Active in Osaka, Kansai region, he was advised by Wada Waichisai I. After 1929, he signed his work as Shoen (Shoen made this), such as this one. This basket was made using "sooted" bamboo (susutake in Japanese). This bamboo materials was collected from traditional thatched-roof houses that had been exposed to decades of smoke from a hearth or cooking fire, therefore the basket displays a deep rich patina that is hard to attain by color-lacquering. The basket featured a large rounded barrel form with handle. The body was constructed with a twill plaiting variation of a more relaxed and loose weave. It allows the light coming through to render the piece a lighter sense. Parallel plaiting was used to reinforce the body with stripes of bamboo, while adding more visual constrict to a free spirited background. Twisted bamboo strips form rope-like handle and the top rim. It is signed "Shoen Made This" on the base. Two-piece water container made from bamboo trunk is retained with the piece as shown. For the artists other and similar work, see baskets masterpieces of Japanese Bamboo Art...

Ceramic Nippon Morimura Brothers Decorative Dish Vide Poche or Catchall, 1800s
Ceramic Nippon Morimura Brothers Decorative Dish Vide Poche or Catchall, 1800s

Ceramic Nippon Morimura Brothers Decorative Dish Vide Poche or Catchall, 1800s

Located in Oklahoma City, OK

A rare find, this decorative oval shaped Nippon catchall by Morimura Brothers is a fabulous example of early Japanese ceramics. A lovely ceramic dish for holding change or other items, it will be a fabulous chintz addition to any nightstand or foyer table. Highly decorated in bouquets of pink and yellow flowers, the center of the dish is the showstopper. A chinoiserie bird in flight with a pink breast and yellow, blue and green feathers takes center stage. Surrounding him are more bouquets of flowers and a single pink and blue bird. The rim of the dish is encircled with a blue ribbon adorned with intricately painted flowers such as white daisys and pink and yellow peonies. Two handles are at each end for carrying. The handles and the rim are both painted in gold. The back stamp at bottom reads in green, “M-in-Wreath, hand-painted ("M" stands for importer, Morimura Bros.); Nippon.” Mark used since 1911. The practice of painting of the word “Nippon” on ceramic bases began in 1891 in response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren’t “plainly marked...
