Located in PARIS, FR
Beautiful roaring lion in gold patinated bronze by the artist and sculptor Louis Vidal (1831-1892) of the Romantic period, France 19th century. Dimensions in cm ( H x L x l ) : 17 x 36 x 9 Secure shipping. Louis Vidal, Vidal the blind or Vidal-Navatel is a French sculptor born on December 6, 1831 in Nîmes and who passed on May 9th, 1892 in the 12th district of Paris. Born to an unknown father and Sophie Vidal-Navatel, he grew up in a family of artists, having for stepfather the painter Alexandre Colin who married his mother in second marriage and for half-brother Paul-Alfred Colin. He studied anatomy but became blind around 1853, which prevented him from pursuing this path. He studied with the animal sculptors Antoine-Louis Barye and Pierre Louis Rouillard and became an animal sculptor himself by replacing sight with touch. This faculty enabled him to create portraits, he perceived the shape of faces by touching them and sculpted them in clay, and remains known as the author of a sculpture representing a roaring lion, as well as that of a bull in bronze, donated by the State to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes in 1867. Louis Vidal worked in particular with Alfred Barye, son of his master Antoine-Louis Barye. He became a professor of modeling in 1888 at the École Braille in Paris. A portrait of the artist taken by the photographer Étienne Carjat...

French, Antique Bronze Sculpture of Aberdeen Angus Bull by Isidore Bonheur
Located in Shippensburg, PA
ISIDORE JULES BONHEUR French, 1827-1901 Taureau Aberdeen-Angus" (Standing Aberdeen-Angus Bull) Patinated sand-cast bronze Signed to base "I. BONHEUR" Item # 211HDB17Z An exquisite and very rare casting of an Aberdeen-Angus bull, an unusual and distinctive breed of cattle from Scotland, this sculpture by Isidore Jules Bonheur is almost without a doubt cast by the foundry of his brother-in-law Hippolyte Peyrol and a rather early model as well in light of the distinctive construction method. In her text on the selection of 46 animal bronzes in the collection of the Georgia Museum of Art, Eleanor Luciano notes regarding this model that "Bonheur is never recorded to have been to Scotland, where he would have seen this unusual breed. Rosa Bonheur painted in Scotland, and its seems likely that Isidore would have drawn the idea for this bull either from one of her sketches or from an agricultural show in France. The animal's rich mane and strong modeling make this one of the most successful." Notable is the very fine surface patination which exhibits a glassy finish with a complex range of colors presenting in the body of the bull, overall being medium brown but augmented with an underlying reddish hue against auburn highlights. The base is signed "I. BONHEUR" in the typical manner. Museum Collections: * National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, acc. no. 2006.128.3 * Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia...

Rare French Antique Bronze Sculpture “Lion Assis no.2” after Antoine-Louis Barye
Located in Shippensburg, PA
ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE French, 1796-1875 "Lion Assis no. 2" Patinated bronze Signed in cast "BARYE" Item # 109YHP24E Initially modeled by Barye in 1846 as a commission by Louis-Phillipe for the Tuilleries Gardens at a cost of 10,000 francs, the life-size sculpture sat near to Barye's Lion au Serpent until it was later moved in 1867 to the grand entrance to Pavilion de Flore and a pair was crafted for it using a mechanical technique, a gesture which incensed Barye, as he preferred to sculpt a mate to oppose Lion Assis but the government refused on the basis of the high cost. There are similarities between Lion Assis and Barye's Lion of the July Column, both beasts with notable similarity in the multiple layers of their manes and the quiet repose and powerful presence of the motionless Lion Assis is a natural development over his violent clashing group of Lion au Serpent from thirteen years prior. Version no. 1 was first offered in Barye's 1847 catalogue as no. 99 and due to the popularity of the sculpture it was cast in four different editions with varying dimensions. Lion Assis no. 2 was originally set over two base types: the more rare naturalistic base seen in the present model and the more common molded base (which incidentally also gives that variation some additional height). It was cast posthumously by Auguste Delafontaine, Hector Brame, Colin, Barbedienne and Graech-Marly. The same model and the original plaster and wax are held in the permanent collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (acc. no. 2007.70 & 71). The present model is an early posthumous cast with a richly textured surface and exquisite detail finished in an overall dark brown patina with hints of reddish undertones; the surface is silky and translucent. Artist Listings & Bibliography: *Barye: Catalogue raisonné des sculptures, Polleti & Richarme, 2000, p. 182, cat. A57, ill. 143 *The Founders and Editors of the Barye Bronzes, Reinis, 2007, see p. 85-88 for discussion of Delafontaine and their role in casting Lion Assis (fig. 50), see p. 79-80 (fig. 25) for discussion of Ancienne Maison Colin...

Equestrian statue of William I and two candelabras with halberdiers
By Count Alfred Émilien O'Hara van Nieuwerkerke
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
Mantel garniture with clock and pair of candelabras in brown patinated bronze on Statuary marble and gilt bronze pedestals. Equestrian statue signed and dated : « E de Nieuwerkerke 1843 » on the base and bronze caster's mark « Susse Edt » Dimensions of the clock : H. 84 cm (33”1/16) x W. 46,5 cm (18”5/16) x D. 24,5 cm (9”11/16) Dimensions of the candelabras : H. 90,5 cm (35”5/8) x W. 25 cm (9”7/8) x D. 25 cm (9”7/8) At the “Salon des Artistes Français” in 1843, the young Count Alfred Emile de Nieuwerkerke (1811-1892), then aged 32, presented a plaster equestrian statue entitled William I, known as the Taciturn, Prince of Orange. A great nineteenth-century sculptor, Émile de Nieuwerkerke is best known for having been Head Director of the Museums since 1849, and probably the most influential man on cultural policy in France until the end of the Second Empire. Nieuwerkerke's fervor for art began when he became passionate for sculpture, at the age of 23, and took classes with the great James Pradier and Baron Carlo Marochetti. His connections allow him to realize official commissions, including the busts of the Empress Eugenie and Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. The Count de Nieuwerkerke made a name for himself at the 1838 Salon with the exhibition of the group The Death of the Duke of Clarence that really launched his career. Having been a pupil of Carlo Marochetti, a sculptor of Italian origin, the young Nieuwerkerke can only be strongly impressed by the equestrian statue of the Monument to Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy created by the master between 1833 and 1838 and adorning the Piazza San Carlo of Turin in Italy. There is no doubt that this monumental statue...
