Victorian Sterling Silver Gilt Goblet by Frederick Elkington, 1871
Victorian Sterling Silver Gilt Goblet by Frederick Elkington, 1871

Victorian Sterling Silver Gilt Goblet by Frederick Elkington, 1871

Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian sterling silver gilt goblet; an addition to our wine and drinks related silverware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver gilt goblet has a circular bulbous-shaped form onto a swept pedestal and circular spreading foot. The body of this impressive antique silver goblet is encompassed with a central band of chased and engraved scrolling foliate and floral decoration, incorporating swan and vase ornamentation, all on a matte background. The decoration to the body incorporates an impressive cartouche displaying the contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting between two arms embowed a sun in splendour. The cylindrical upper rim is encompassed with further scrolling leaf decoration, flanked with an applied dart decorated border to the nadir and a moulded border to the rim. The cast silver waisted pedestal features a spiralling bead design, incorporating scrolling motifs to the upper portion, replicating the details of an architectural column. The circular spreading foot is embellished with impressive cast figural mask designs alternating with layered leaf motifs, all ornamented with further bead decoration. The swept rim of the slightly weighted base is further ornamented with a leaf decorated festoon. This sterling silver goblet retains the original gilding; the gilding to the exterior of the goblet has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion. This exceptional goblet, crafted by the renowned silversmith Frederick Elkington of Elkington & Co, is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. Condition This antique 1870s silver gilt goblet is a magnificent gauge of silver, magnificent quality and in magnificent condition. The chased decoration is all very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of this Victorian silver goblet...

1970s Stirrup Cup With The Head Of A Stag or Elk. Vintage Silver plated stag head with large antlers stirrup cup. The stirrup cup can be displayed on their base and upside down on their antler. Beautifully detailed with textured top, the stirrup cup adorned with a cast stag head on its base, banded center and semi-gloss bottom. Playful stirrup cup from the 1970s in the style of Gucci. They balance with the animal heads up or down and can just be used as decorative objects if desired. This Classic Elizabeth II style stirrup cup, is of plain beaker form with a cast stag head to one end. Can be displayed as pictured or with the cup upside down, resting on the stag's antlers. This bar favorite stands out for the drink aficionado! Larger than many of the stirrup cups. In the early 19th century, stirrup cups were originally used as a vessel to hold a drink offered to a man on horseback before a hunting departure. Today in England and Europe stirrup cups are still used to serve drinks on horseback to the participants in a fox hunt or steeple chase, the beverage is given to guests just before the very moment of departure, referring to having one's feet in the stirrups. It is also the drink served at the meet before a fox hunt. The Italian fashion house, Gucci, made a very similar set during the 70s. Nowadays, stirrup cups are still commonly connected with hunting but are also used for decorative gifts on any occasion. Stag, Deer or Elk Stirrup Cup. Capacity: 8 oz. Height: 6.25". Diameter of the cup: 3.25" Antlers Width: 4". Made of Silver-Plate Figural English stirrup cup with stag. No maker's mark. Antique and Vintage Barware for Sale: Shop Glassware, Barspoons and Art Deco Decanters on 1stDibs

Whether it’s streamlined or sophisticated, a bar area is always a welcoming feature in any home interior. A cheery well-made drink with friends and family has the potential to yield some unforgettable moments alongside those that aren’t easily remembered. And the only way to conjure that exemplary cordial is by putting the proper antique or vintage barware to work.

Essential barware equipment ranges from sterling-silver barspoons for mixing your cocktails in tall collins glasses to jiggers, shakers and strainers that allow you to whip up martinis and old-fashioneds.

From a design standpoint, some barware, such as our array of Art Deco glass whiskey sets or mid-century modern silver-banded tumblers crafted by Dorothy Thorpe, can help position your bar as a bold and attractive centerpiece to a room. At the very least, a carefully curated collection of barware can elevate with subtlety the bar’s nearby fixtures, as a handcrafted crystal decanter might do for your vintage 1960s bar cart.

As cocktail hour draws near, find inspiration in our gorgeous gallery of home bars in locales ranging from London to New York to San Francisco, and browse the exquisite selection of antique, new and vintage barware and glassware on 1stDibs.
