Victorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan
Victorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan

Victorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan

Located in Incline Village, NV

The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time. These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva! Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...

1920s French Art Deco Porcelain ROBJ Russian Peasant White & Gilt Gold Decanter

1920s French Art Deco Porcelain ROBJ Russian Peasant White & Gilt Gold Decanter

By ROBJ

Located in Red Lion, PA

He is white glaze with gold gilt painted detailing. He has a red nose and a long brown mustache and beard. he wears a tall hat that also fuctions as the top of the decanter and his arms are straigt by his side with stylized art deco hands. He is signed on the bottom ROBJ Paris Made in France. Please mention the history of ROBJ, the importance and collectability of these decanters, the museum collections they are in and the history of this piece in particular. This 1920s French Art Deco porcelain decanter is a sophisticated example of the whimsical "anthropomorphic" bottles popularized by ROBJ Paris. Standing as a stylized Russian figure, the piece features a pristine white glaze punctuated by luxurious gold gilt detailing. His expressive face is defined by a bold red nose and a long, meticulously painted brown mustache and beard. The figure is capped with a tall, architectural hat that doubles as the decanter's functional stopper, while his arms rest straight at his sides, ending in the characteristic, highly stylized hands that define the Art Deco aesthetic of the period. The base bears the authentic stamp "ROBJ Paris Made in France". Founded in 1908 by Jean Born (using an anagram of his name), ROBJ was not a manufacturer but an éditeur, commissioning elite porcelain factories like Manufacture de Sèvres, Villeroy & Boch, and several esteemed Limoges workshops to produce its designs. After Born’s death in 1922, Lucien Willemetz took over, steering the house toward the iconic "art trinkets" that won a bronze medal at the landmark 1925 Exposition of Decorative Arts. These liquor decanters, introduced in 1928, became ROBJ's most famous and sought-after line, celebrated for their playful "Jazz Age" humor and modernist silhouettes. Today, ROBJ decanters...

1920s Art Deco White 7 Gold ROBJ France Scotsman w/ Bagpipes Porcelain Decanter

1920s Art Deco White 7 Gold ROBJ France Scotsman w/ Bagpipes Porcelain Decanter

By ROBJ

Located in Red Lion, PA

This exceptional 1920s French Art Deco porcelain decanter, modeled as a kilted Scotsman with bagpipes, is a premier example of the whimsical "bibelots" popularized by the renowned Parisian firm Robj. Established in 1908 by Jean Born, Robj became a beacon of Art Deco style under the management of Lucien Willmetz following Born's death in 1922. Robj functioned as an éditeur, commissioning elite porcelain manufacturers, including Manufacture de Sèvres, Villeroy & Boch, and various Limoges houses, to produce their avant-garde designs. This specific "Kilted Scotsman with bagpipes" figure was part of a hugely successful series of anthropomorphic liqueur bottles launched in 1928, designed to bring a sense of humor and "art de vivre" to the modern home bar. The decanter features a striking architectural form, entirely glazed in a pristine white with elegant gold gilt accents that emphasize its geometric Art Deco lines. The Scotsman is depicted playing the bagpipes, which are adorned with large, meticulously painted gilt tassels. He is enveloped in a sweeping cape, cleverly designed to expose only a single knee, his kilt, and a portion of his high sock, a detail that showcases the characteristic Robj blend of playful caricature and refined craftsmanship. His hat serves as the functional lid to the vessel, and remarkably, the original cork remains intact. Signed "ROBJ Paris Made In France" on the base, the piece is in excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks, showing only minor expected wear to the gilt on high-contact areas.Today, Robj decanters...

20th Century Cockatoo Solid Silver & Porcelain Claret Jug, Asprey & Co c.1912

20th Century Cockatoo Solid Silver & Porcelain Claret Jug, Asprey & Co c.1912

By Asprey & Garrard Limited

Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent

Antique early-20th Century English solid silver and mounted on Spode Copeland's China novelty wine jug, in the form of a standing cockatoo, set with coloured glass eyes and white porcelain body imitating textured plumage, mounted with a realistically modelled silver head and feet. Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), Sheffield, year 1912 (u), Maker A&CoLt (Asprey & Co Ltd). The world-famous English luxury manufacturer and retailer Asprey & Co started as a small silk printing business by William Asprey in Mitcham, Surrey. Soon the company largely expanded its offering by purchasing some other firms. By 1847 Asprey moved to its iconic premises at New Bond Street in London and established its flagship store, where one could buy all ranges of exquisite goods, from books to dressing cases with silver details. At the International Exhibition in 1862, Asprey high-quality dressing cases won a gold medal, which brought the company a worldwide reputation for exquisite craftsmanship. The Royal Warrant, which was awarded by her Majesty Queen Victoria the same year, just perpetuated that reputation. Since then, Asprey has received a Royal Warrant from every British monarch. Besides dressing cases, the company produced and retailed a wide range of exclusive goods, including silver, gold, jewelry, stationery, cutlery, tableware, etc. In the 20th century, commissions poured from all over the world and by the 1920s Asprey created them not only for British Royalty, but for foreign Royals and heads of states as well. The most sensational orders of all were the exquisite pearl necklace for Queen Mary and the teak and silver traveling trunks for the five beloved wives of the Maharaja of Patiala. The 20s and 30s were the golden era of the Art Deco style, of which Asprey was a big adopter, many of its luxury goods from that time became iconic, such as Asprey cigarette cases...
