Antique William III Britannia Standard Silver Quart Tankard

By John Smith

Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne

A magnificent, fine and impressive antique William III English Britannia standard silver flat topped quart tankard; an addition to our range of collectable 18th century silverware. This magnificent antique William III Britannia silver tankard has a plain tapering cylindrical form onto a spreading collet style foot. The surface of this 18th century quart tankard is embellished with an impressive engraved leaf and floral bordered coat of arms depicting party per pale to the first a chevron between three lion's heads erased and to the second a bend raguly. The upper and lower portions of the body are encircled with bands of tooled decoration, with an applied moulded border to the upper rim. This antique quart tankard retains the original double stepped flat topped, hallmarked cover surmounted with an impressive volute scrolling thumbpiece. The cover is further ornamented with a band of tooled decoration to the rim accented with an applied shaped thumbpiece to the anterior edge. The hinge is decorated with ribbed ornamentation and retains the original pin. This antique Britannia standard silver tankard is fitted with an S-scroll handle ornamented with a plain rounded terminal. The spreading collet foot is encircled with a band of applied moulded decoration to the rim. Imperial quart = 2 pints/1.14 litres. Britannia silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). The armourial bearings are those of the Wyndham and Penruddocke family, to commemorate the marriage of Henry Wyndham and Arundel Penruddocke on 11th September 1735. Antique Sterling Silver Mug
Antique Sterling Silver Mug

Antique Sterling Silver Mug

Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne

A fine and impressive small antique 17th century English sterling silver mug; an addition to our silverware collection. This fine and impressive antique William & Mary* sterling silver mug has a cylindrical tapering form. The surface of this hand raised silver mug is embellished with the impressive engraved chinoiserie decoration depicting simplified figures farming. The decoration to the body incorporates an organic bordered cartouche ornamented with the contemporary engraved initials 'SH'. The body of this sterling silver mug is further embellished with bands of tooled decoration, in addition to applied moulded decoration to the upper and lower rims. This 17th century silver mug is fitted with an impressive cast silver S scroll handle ornamented with thread decoration. Such examples from this period are rare to the market and becoming increasing difficult to locate. * This period of history saw the co-reign of King William III and Queen Mary II from 1689 until her death in 1694. Mary was the princess royal and daughter of Charles I and William III, who was also known as William of Orange, was the sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from the 1670s. NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. Due to this unfortunate event we are unable to associate a maker to this mug. Condition This 17th century silver mug is an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition. The engraved decoration is all crisp in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the mug are very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this small antique silver...
