English Chinoiserie Blue and White Bowls Plates Copeland, Set of 3, Late 19th C

By Copeland

Located in New York, NY

An English set of three (3) cobalt‑blue and off‑white ironstone soup plates, in a Chinoiserie landscape pattern, by W. T. Copeland & Son, Stoke‑Pon‑Trent, England, circa late 19th century (1875–1890). These pieces are traditionally known as soup plates and are also referred to as deep plates — ideal for soup, pasta, salad, etc. Each plate features a crisp cobalt design depicting pagodas, bridges, birds, and trees, framed by a scalloped rim with a geometric border. The design is part of the classic Willow‑style family of English blue‑and‑white Chinoiserie patterns inspired by Chinese export porcelain. All three are marked on the reverse with W. T. Copeland & Son and Royal Ironstone...

Rare 18th century Moustiers Callot Faience Plate, Yellow
Rare 18th century Moustiers Callot Faience Plate, Yellow

Rare 18th century Moustiers Callot Faience Plate, Yellow

Located in Leesburg, VA

Hold a piece of 18th-century France. This exceptional earthenware deep plate, originating from the revered kilns of Moustiers, is a ceramic canvas of Rococo wit and whimsey. Executed in the highly sought-after yellow monochrome (ochre), the central well explodes with a vibrant, tiered tableau. Here, history is playful. We invite your eyes to dance among the intricate grotesques in the distinctive manner of Jacques Callot. It is a world of theatrical caprice: a dramatic winged beast, an elaborately costumed performer, and a whimsical unicorn-like rider sharing space with fluttering butterflies and palm trees. Every glance reveals a new, charming detail of this Commedia dell'arte-inspired scene. The scalloped rim, bordered by refined ochre bands and intricate floral sprigs, frames this spectacle. This item possesses a deep, honest patina of time. We view its imperfections—a fine, historic vertical hairline crack through the body, professionally stabilized to preserve structural integrity, and various wear marks—not as damage, but as the authentic signatures of centuries of curation and history. It is a tangible link to a grander era. This Moustiers plate...

Antique and Vintage Dinner Plates

Set the mood when you’re setting the table. The right antique and vintage dinner plates for the meals in your home can truly elevate the dining experience.

We haven’t had our own plate at dinner for very long. It wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century in Europe that individual dinner plates had become the norm, replacing the platters that diners had shared before them. Innovations at the dining table are believed to have been introduced by Italian noblewoman Catherine de’ Medici, who, when she married King Henry II of France in 1533, brought with her decorative table adornments for meals and fine tableware such as silver forks, replacing the fingers and knives utilized during dinner before her arrival. Italy was a bit faster on table settings, and, thanks to Catherine, tableware such as dinner plates would also replace the wooden trenchers and flat slabs of days-old bread that preceded them.

Today, while enthusiasts of mid-century modern furnishings might pine for vintage mismatched dinner plates — a mix of old and new can be refreshing — presenting ceramic vessels, glassware and decorative centerpieces that matched was once actually part of the point as setting the table became more refined during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And as Fornasetti dinner plates and Chinese porcelain tableware have long held weight as collector’s items and status symbols, your dinner dishes haven’t ever really been merely functional. From antique metal dishes and ornamental earthenware designed by celebrated English ceramics makers Wedgwood, dinner plates are statement-making works that bring elegance and likely stir conversation at your table.

Entertaining is an art form, and the kitchen bar island and dining room table in your space are cherished gathering places where families and friends convene and grow closer over good meals. Browse an extensive collection of antique and vintage dinner plates to pair with these important events today on 1stDibs.
