This antique eighteenth-century Dutch Delftware wall plaque is made of tin-glazed earthenware, also known as Delft faience. The shaped ceramic plaque is painted in blue, green, yellow, iron-red and manganese. Its raised, self-framing border is outlined in blue and decorated with continuous scrolling ornament against a green ground. The centre is painted with an elaborate symmetrical fantasy ornament composed of three winged masks, volutes, foliage, shell motifs and scale-patterned fields. The central mask supports a two-handled vase filled with flowers, with a bird in flight above the bouquet. The plaque is pierced at the top for suspension and was made specifically for wall display. The composition belongs to the broader tradition of French-inspired grotesque ornament that circulated in the Dutch Republic through prints by designers such as Jean Bérain and Daniel Marot. By the mid-eighteenth century, Delft painters had adapted this ornamental vocabulary freely, combining masks, scrolls and fantastical forms into highly decorative compositions. Delftware wall plaques held a distinct place within eighteenth-century Dutch interiors. In contemporary household inventories, they were sometimes recorded as porceleine schilderijen, or “porcelain paintings”, reflecting their function as ceramic counterparts to paintings on panel, canvas or copper. During the eighteenth century, Delft potters increasingly produced plaques in moulds with shaped outlines and raised borders, creating complete, self-framed decorative objects. Polychrome Delftware Wall Plaque with Bird and Flower Basket Delft, circa 1750 This antique eighteenth-century Dutch Delftware wall plaque is made of tin-glazed earthenware and painted in blue, green, yellow, iron-red and manganese. The lozenge-shaped plaque has a raised, self-framing border and is pierced at the top with two holes for suspension. The centre is painted with an exotic bird perched among flowering branches rising from a rectangular basket. The flowers and foliage are enclosed within a shaped cartouche outlined in yellow and green scrollwork. Large stylised flower heads interrupt the surrounding blue diaper-patterned ground, while the outer border is decorated with continuous scrolling ornament in blue, yellow and iron-red. The combination of an exotic bird, abundant flowers and geometric patterning reflects the continuing influence of Chinese and Japanese porcelain on mid-eighteenth-century Delftware. Delft painters did not simply reproduce Asian designs, but combined individual motifs with European cartouches, scrollwork and shaped borders to create new decorative compositions. Wall plaques of this type were produced specifically for display. In contemporary household inventories they were sometimes described as porceleine schilderijen, or “porcelain paintings”, reflecting their role as ceramic counterparts to framed paintings. Antique German Lidded Blue Glazed Earthenware Beer Stein Jug Merkelbach & Wick German Earthenware, Metal c. 1900 Dimensions: H x D: 18.5cm x 13.5cm This fine beer stein was made by Merkelbach & Wick, a German stoneware factory based in Grenzhausen. Founded around 1872–1873 by Friedrich Wilhelm Merkelbach II and Georg Peter Wick, the firm became known for its fine earthenware and, from the early 1880s onward, its ivory stoneware, which blended traditional craftsmanship with emerging artistic styles. Their creations gained particular popularity in North America, with roughly half of their production exported there by the late 19th century. Merkelbach & Wick’s beer steins were especially notable: many 19th and early 20th century pub steins, including those produced for major breweries, were crafted in salt-glazed or ivory stoneware and often bore the distinctive ‘M W Gr.’ impressed seal - such as the one on this example - making them highly prized by collectors today. Crafted from earthenware, this stein features moulded high-relief decoration encircling the entire body. Various geometric borders frame a central band filled with naturalistic and mythological motifs. Oval cartouches contain classical busts, while the spaces between them depict centaurs, symbolising the duality of human nature and the tension between intellect and instinct. The deep blue glaze accentuates the raised decoration while allowing parts of the ivory-coloured earthenware to remain visible for contrast. The prominent earthenware handle is decorated in the same style as the body, and the vessel is topped with a hinged metal lid. Its generously sized thumb lever allows the drinker to comfortably raise the lid, and the top is inset with a beautifully modelled earthenware panel. On the base remains the original Merkelbach & Wick label, highlighting the firm's international reach with branches in Philadelphia, Vienna, and Munich. A Neoclassical red transferware tile made by Spode 1806-1810, with the ‘Zeus in His Chariot’ pattern. Sir William Hamilton’s Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities, first published in 1766 by Pierre d’Hancarville, was a landmark publication in English design. It intended to disseminate the Antique style through its engravings of Attic pottery. The catalog’s faithful reproductions of Classical vases led British potteries, including Spode, to adapt or even copy the ancient art for modern life. These Spode Greek pattern tiles reflect the major influence of Hamilton’s catalog on English Neoclassicism. The central scene was taken directly from the catalog. This tile can be dated to a narrow window of production in the Spode factory, 1806-1810. During that time, Spode used a technique known as the “Pluck and Dust” method to print in red transfer designs onto creamware. Using this method, source prints were transferred overglaze using tissue imprinted with a very faint rendition of the design outlined in sticky oil. The decorator applied the tissue to the object then carefully “plucked” or pulled it away, leaving the sticky oil design behind. Then, a finely-ground enamel color was “dusted” onto the surface, sticking to any areas that had the oil. A final firing at a low temperature in the enamel kiln made the pattern permanent. The Pluck and Dust technique improved upon bat-printing and enabled larger designers to be transferred. It was short-lived, however, as under-glaze transfer printing soon took over as the preferred method for producing transferwares. Dimensions: 5 in. x 5 in. x 1/4 in. Condition: Excellent.
