Superb antique silver bowl or Champagne cooler of epic proportions. Known as The Helenic Bowl, the triform lobed bowl was was made during the latter part of the 19th century and is a registered piece in the back catalogue of its maker, Hancocks. There is no mention of the purchaser at the time. Following advice from the Victoria & Albert Museum, we are given to understand that the friezes are based on classical scenes of the Trojan Wars including the capture of Troy by the Greeks. The three curved panels are hand chased in very fine detail and the protruding masks represent Poseidon, Greek god of the sea.* This magnificent bowl rests on three massive lion-paw feet which, in turn, are mounted on a triform base. * Poseiden was the Olympian god who presided over the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses. He was the protector of seafarers and the guardian of many Hellenic cities and colonies. Naturally we have filled this magnificent antique cooler...

A charming Art Deco English silver-plated novelty tea set, modelled as three elegant vintage motor cars and comprising a teapot, milk jug and covered sugar bowl. Highly decorative yet functional, the sculptural automobile forms bring wit and sophistication to the traditional English tea service. With polished silver surfaces, fitted lids and distinctive period styling, this collectable vintage car tea set makes an exceptional conversation piece for entertaining, display or gifting. Of English origin, the set bears a series of impressed maker’s and registration-style marks to the underside, as shown in the photographs. These marks contribute to its period character and may assist further attribution and dating. Combining the traditions of English silver-plated tableware with novelty automobile design, the set has particular appeal to collectors of vintage motoring memorabilia, decorative antiques and unusual British tea and coffee wares. Each piece is imaginatively fashioned as a classic open-top motor car, complete with sculpted wheels, sweeping mudguards and beautifully modelled bodywork. The largest car forms the teapot with a black angular handle, while the accompanying covered vessels complete the three-piece service. Playful without sacrificing elegance, this novelty car-shaped tea set is equally at home on a formal afternoon tea table, cocktail cabinet or collector’s display. Preserve the lustre of this vintage silver-plated tea service by polishing sparingly with a soft, non-abrasive cloth and a specialist product suitable for silver plate. Avoid dishwashers, abrasive cleaners and prolonged soaking, particularly around joints, handles and fitted components. After use, wash carefully by hand and dry immediately. Gentle handling will help maintain the polished finish, decorative details and distinctive character of these unusual English novelty silver-plated wares. Crafted in silver-plated metal, the set demonstrates inventive English decorative metalwork through its combination of functional serving vessels and meticulously shaped automobile bodies. Hinged or fitted lids, handles, spouts and three-dimensional wheels are cleverly integrated into the motor-car forms. The unusual construction makes this three-piece English silver-plated tea set particularly desirable for collectors of novelty silver, classic car memorabilia...
