Antique Moroccan Fez Polychrome Ceramic Bowl with Silver Filigree, circa 1920. A beautifully handcrafted Moroccan polychrome ceramic bowl from Fez, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1920. Combining the celebrated blue-and-white ceramic tradition of Fez with intricate applied metalwork, this unusual piece has a particularly decorative and collectible character. Measuring approximately 10.5 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches high, the shallow bowl is hand-painted in a sophisticated palette dominated by the distinctive cobalt blue traditionally associated with Bleu de Fez pottery. The ceramic surface is decorated with an elaborate composition of geometric, floral and stylized Moorish motifs arranged in repeating symmetrical patterns. Three prominent lobed medallions occupy the center, each filled with finely painted geometric latticework and a stylized floral rosette. Surrounding these are additional floral and abstract patterns characteristic of the rich vocabulary of Moroccan Islamic decorative arts. What makes this example particularly distinctive is the elaborate nickel-silver-colored filigree metalwork applied over and around the ceramic decoration. Finely worked metal borders articulate the individual medallions and encircle the perimeter, creating a jewel-like framework around the painted pottery. The contrast between cool silver-colored metal and cobalt-blue decoration gives the bowl an unusually architectural appearance reminiscent of Moroccan carved plaster, metalwork and zellige compositions. The piece reflects the longstanding ceramic tradition of Fez, Morocco, one of North Africa's most important historic centers of pottery production. Fez ceramics are particularly recognized for their hand-painted geometric and vegetal ornament, cobalt palette and relationship to the broader Hispano-Moresque and Andalusian decorative tradition. Raised on a narrow foot, the shallow profile allows the painted and metalwork decoration to remain fully visible when displayed on a table, console or collector's cabinet. It would also make a compelling addition to a grouping of Moroccan ceramics, Islamic metalwork or North African decorative arts. The bowl has a wonderfully layered appearance that works equally well within Moorish, Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, Islamic, Moroccan and eclectic collector interiors.
