Medieval Egyptian Mamluk Brass Tray Stand with Silver Inlay
Located in London, GB
This exceptionally beautiful and rare silver-inlaid brass tray stand dates from the medieval period, when the Mamluks ruled Egypt and Syria (1250-1517). The Mamluks originated as slave-soldiers, who served the Muslim caliphs and Ottoman Empire. With time, the Mamluks became a powerful military caste, and they managed to take control and establish themselves as rulers of certain areas within the Abbasid caliphate. The Mamluk dynasty commissioned great works of art and architecture, particularly in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt, which was described in the 14th Century as ‘the centre of the universe and garden of the world’ (Ibn Khaldun, 1382). This tray stand is of biconical form, with a raised central band and flared base and rim. It is decorated with scrolling vines, overlaid with Thuluth inscriptions and roundels. On the lower body, the roundels contain floral motifs, and in the upper, stylised depictions of birds. The Thuluth inscriptions praise the patron, referring to him as ‘The High authority, the Lordly, the Possessor’, and ‘the learned’. The underside of the rim is engraved with a heraldic medallion, possibly the patron’s symbol. In the middle ages, when this piece was made, this item would have stood in a grand interior, supporting a tray full of fruit and fine food. The owner of this lavish piece which still bears traces of its original silver inlay would likely have been an Amir (prince) or some other important figure who was close to the Sultan in the Mamluk court. Mamluk tray...

Large Romanian Knotted Carpet, Attributed to Tuduc
By Theodor Tuduc 1
Located in London, GB
This beautiful, vibrant carpet has been attributed to the important Romanian carpet-maker, Theodor Tuduc (1888-1893). Tuduc ran a prestigious workshop in the 19th century which specialised in the restoration and replication of antique rugs. This item, for instance, is one of a small group of carpets which were knotted after early Caucasian ‘dragon’ rugs. Tuduc's copies of antique rugs were so beautiful and accurate that they have become almost as collectable as the originals. The carpet field is knotted with beautiful stylised depictions of animals, birds and dragons, as well as fruit trees, flowers, and foliage. These designs have been rendered in red, orange, light blue, turquoise, navy, green, mustard yellow, and off-white. This field is set within a border, knotted with similarly colored foliate motifs against an off-white background. Literature: For early Caucasian dragon carpets...

Ottoman Mother-of-Pearl and Ebony Inlaid Wall Bracket
Located in London, GB
Ottoman Mother-of-Pearl and Ebony Inlaid Wall Bracket Syrian, 19th Century Height 103cm, width 39cm, depth 21cm Inlaid with mother-of-pearl and ebony in intricate geometric and foliate parquetry patterns, this beautiful piece was made in Syria in the nineteenth century during the time of the Ottoman Empire. With a central latticed rectangular panel at the back of the central shelf, with canted corners, it is flanked on each side by pillars with isometric triangular shaped cresting. The upper section, like the lower part, features foliate rather than geometric designs, and the surmount with a crescent finial features a large central roundel enclosing a mother-of-pearl inlaid tughra. All in all, the ebony and mother of pearl dance beautifully throughout various patterns and motifs, creating a fine decorative piece, and an excellent antique ware...

Antique Porcelain Huqqa for Persian Market
Located in London, GB
This beautiful huqqa (or hookah), an instrument used for smoking—is a highly collectable antique piece. It created in the late 19th century, most likely in Russia. The huqqa is finely decorated with depictions of Qajar kings, suggesting that it was created for the Persian market. The huqqa features a bell-shaped base with a ribbed cylindrical top. This is covered by a cup-shaped feature on a knopped stem. The huqqa is crafted from porcelain which is white and finely decorated with deep blue stylised vines, leaves and flowers. Large Viennese Cold-Painted Bronze Lamp of a Mandolin Player by Bergman
Located in London, GB
Large Viennese cold-painted bronze lamp of a mandolin player by Bergman Austrian, c. 1910 Height 39cm, width 15cm, depth 15cm Crafted around 1910 by Franz Xaver Bergman (Austrian, 1861-1936), this Orientalist sculptural lamp depicts a young woman playing a mandolin and singing. She is sitting on a green cushioned seat while beneath her feet is a polychrome patterned rug draped on two steps. Dressed in typical Orientalist clothing, her beautifully executed facial expression suggests she is in a joyful mood. Above the main figure is a domed canopy. Its construction includes a pierced window draped by a striped red and gold curtain. A gold shield and a flag also hang on the construction. The domed cover is superbly decorated with trefoil windows filled with coloured glass and is surmounted by a crescent moon which is an important symbol of Islam. A similar motif can also be observed on the flagpole. The lamp is stamped with a ‘B’ in an urn-shaped cartouche, ‘GESCH’ as well as ‘3’. The cold-painting technique has been superbly used to highlight even the smallest details of the scene, such as the patterns on the rug or the texture of the seat. An almost identical example is featured in Joseph Zobel, Antique Vienna Bronzes...

Austrian Orientalist Cold-Painted Bronze Lamp of a Shoe Cobbler
Located in London, GB
Austrian Orientalist cold-painted bronze lamp of a shoe cobbler Austrian, Early 20th Century Height 23cm, width 21cm, depth 16cm The story presented by the makers of this sculptural lamp is set at a shoe cobbler’s workshop. Made in the traditional Viennese manner of cold-painted bronze, the piece is an outstanding example of high quality Orientalist design. Three shoe cobblers are depicted working together in a traditional Orientalist building, one covered by textiles to protect them from the elements. The wall is decorated with a large pair of scissors, a tool often used by shoe cobblers. In the foreground is a male figure reaching towards a wooden bench on which shoes needing repair are displayed. Behind him, sitting on a bamboo-supported table sit two other male figures. The first one is caught mid-speaking, in a pose suggesting he is excited. On his legs is a piece of textile. The man next to him is seen holding threads in both hands, repairing a vibrant red shoe.
