Antique Turkish Hereke Rug
About the Item
The carpet manufactory in Hereke, a city in western Turkey, was founded by the Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecid I in 1841 to produce all of the textiles for his palaces. He gathered the best weavers and artists of the Ottoman Empire to produce high-quality rugs and carpets with unique patterns. This rug has a central circular medallion flanked by animals and cloud bands on a crimson field within a rosette and inscription cartouche border. It has the Hereke manufactory signature woven into the outer guard stripe border in the upper left corner of the rug. 7' 3" x 4' 8" .
