Seat: 17.5" H x 22" W x 21.5" D Ottoman: 18" H x 24" W x 22" D Carl Malmsten was a famous Swedish furniture designer, architect, and educator born in 1888, in Sweden and passed away in 1972. He collaborated with Gunnar Asplund and Uno Ahren. Malmsten has a lasting influence on Swedish design through the two schools which he founded, the Carl Malmsten furniture studies. In 1945, Malmsten was honored for a design with an inaugural Prince Eugen Medal in Sweden. O.H. Sjögren is one of the oldest Swedish furniture companies which is run by the fourth generation. The company was originally founded in circa 1870 by C. Rosén in Tranås, Sweden. In 1902, the Swedish manufacturer ( known today as O.H. Sjögren ) was taken over by Oskar Herbert Sjögren. Pair of Club Chairs by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani Italy, c 1970, Signed
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This newly reupholstered pair of club chairs by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, circa 1970s, features graceful chrome frames with nubby white bouclé fabric. Signed with 1960s/ 1970s Sormani label as shown in photo gallery. *Note, we have the matching sofa available in another listing. The graceful frames share a design quality with Cassina's LC2 / LC3 design by Le Corbusier, as they are 'buckets of cushions' in similar fashion and comfort. However these Sormani lounge chairs feature some unique subtle details, such as the slight "twist" in the rear legs (see photos). Signed with a Sormani label, this particular rare design is attributed to Claudio Salocchi. While there were several other famous designers who created works for Sormani in this time period, the style best matches Salocchi's work. For collectors looking for something unique and rare within a collection of 1960s/ 1970s Italian designs, this pair of easy chairs are an amazing opportunity. These Cassina LC2 / LC3 style chairs...

Antique, New and Vintage Bouclé Furniture

As the weather grows colder, our minds turn toward nesting and all things soft and cozy. In the wintry months especially, bouclé armchairs, sofas, lounge chairs and other bouclé furniture bring warmth and comfort to our spaces.

This soft fabric is characterized by an irregular pattern of looped threads that yield its rich texture and volume. The yarn from which bouclé fabric is made — the name is French for “buckled” or “curled” and refers to the yarn and the fabric — is made up of twisted fibers. It has been used in furniture to reproduce the look and coarse feel of traditional handwoven textiles since the 1800s. But it was architect and designer Eero Saarinen’s revered Womb chair, crafted for Knoll in the 1940s, that turned this cozy but breathable fabric into a staple of modern furniture design.

Bouclé fabric can be found in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles on 1stDibs, and a range of designers and firms including Pierre Paulin, Christian Sorensen, Fritz Hansen — and, of course, Knoll — have produced covetable bouclé furnishings over the years.

Given that Florence Knoll — a revolutionary modernist designer and former protégé of Eero Saarinen's father, Eliel, at Cranbrook Academy of Art — hoped for "something I could curl up in" when she requested what would become the famous Womb chair (and series), could it have been upholstered in anything other than her company's trademark "Classic Bouclé"?

Find antique, new and vintage bouclé furniture on 1stDibs today.
