Mid-Century Modern Pair of Armchairs in Hardwood & Bouclé, Fatima, c. 1960
Located in New York, NY
Available today in NYC, including free domestic shipping, this Mid-Century Modern Pair of Armchairs in Hardwood & Bouclé designed by Fatima is nothing less than a beauty! Introducing a pair of cozy armchairs expertly crafted by Fatima during the 1960s, boasting a sturdy structure made from Brazilian Rosewood, commonly known as Jacaranda, and elegantly upholstered in a sophisticated off white boucle. The arms and legs of these armchairs are exquisitely sculpted, enhancing their overall aesthetic appeal. The deep color of the Rosewood further accentuates the shape of each armchair, while the wood itself has been skillfully refinished. Additionally, the upholstery has been recently replaced, ensuring a fresh and new look. The matching sofa, designated as lot 550, is available for purchase separately (Sofa can be seeing in images). A beautiful set like this could fit into any environment, from mid-century modern, modern, contemporary, eclectic and even farmhouse. Attached vintage press featuring the elegant set. About the designer: FAI, also known as Fatima Arquitetura Interiores, was founded in 1960 by architects Guilherme Nunes and Sávio Visconti in Rio de Janeiro. The company aimed to bring together architecture, decoration, and art, providing a gallery space for artistic expressions related to architecture. Additionally, Sávio and Guilherme aimed to push the boundaries of the local scene by organizing furniture...

Brazilian Wood Three-Seater Sofa by Rino Levi, Brazil 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Rino Levi was one of the pioneers of the modern movement in Brazil, advocating for simple, practical and economical design, disparaging the imitation of classicism. ‘Classical spirit’ rather than classical forms was his ideal. Levi was instrumental in spreading the fame of Brazilian modernism through his furniture designs as well. As this beautiful Brazilian wood sofa shows, by the 1960s, Levi abandoned Italian rationalism in favour of an approach closer to that of the Rio modernists both in his architectural and furniture designs. As a piece of true Brazilian mid-century design, the beauty of the wood and organic shapes and lines dominate this three-seater sofa. The tilted, architectural lines of wood making up the armrests create a visually distinct and exciting appearance. The additional horizontal lines connecting to the backrest are a creative addition, while also supporting the overall stability. The frame with its joinery praises Rino Levi’s craftsmanship and architectural expertise. The beautiful colour of the wood is highlighted by the light upholstery of the body in a premium bouclé fabric, including the three removable cushions. This sofa model is rare to find, for as during Brazil's military dictatorship, it was against the law to export furniture. The ban on exports only ended in the 1980s, but it still took some time for things to change, not to mention that handmade pieces were created in limited editions. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that this sofa is special, and a real rarity. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some scratches and marks on the wood. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 86.41 in W x 28.74 in D x 30.31 in H; Seat height 16.14 in 219.5 cm W x 73 cm D x 77 cm H; Seat height 41 cm About the Designer: Rino Levi was a Brazilian architect important to the development of modernism in Brazil. Levi was born to Italian Jewish parents on December 31, 1901 in São Paulo, Brazil. After graduating from Colégio Dante Alighieri in São Paulo, Levi studied in Milan and Rome under Marcello Piacentini. In 1924, he moved to the School of Architecture of Rome. There, he met Adalberto...

Antique, New and Vintage Bouclé Furniture

As the weather grows colder, our minds turn toward nesting and all things soft and cozy. In the wintry months especially, bouclé armchairs, sofas, lounge chairs and other bouclé furniture bring warmth and comfort to our spaces.

This soft fabric is characterized by an irregular pattern of looped threads that yield its rich texture and volume. The yarn from which bouclé fabric is made — the name is French for “buckled” or “curled” and refers to the yarn and the fabric — is made up of twisted fibers. It has been used in furniture to reproduce the look and coarse feel of traditional handwoven textiles since the 1800s. But it was architect and designer Eero Saarinen’s revered Womb chair, crafted for Knoll in the 1940s, that turned this cozy but breathable fabric into a staple of modern furniture design.

Bouclé fabric can be found in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles on 1stDibs, and a range of designers and firms including Pierre Paulin, Christian Sorensen, Fritz Hansen — and, of course, Knoll — have produced covetable bouclé furnishings over the years.

Given that Florence Knoll — a revolutionary modernist designer and former protégé of Eero Saarinen's father, Eliel, at Cranbrook Academy of Art — hoped for "something I could curl up in" when she requested what would become the famous Womb chair (and series), could it have been upholstered in anything other than her company's trademark "Classic Bouclé"?

Find antique, new and vintage bouclé furniture on 1stDibs today.
