Jean-Michel Frank (28 February 1895–3 August 1941) was a French interior designer known for Minimalist interiors decorated with plain-lined but sumptuous furniture made of luxury materials, such as shagreen, mica, and intricate straw marquetry.
Jean-Michel Frank was born in Paris, a son of Le´on Frank, a banker, and his wife and cousin, the former Nanette Frank. From 1904, he attended the Lyce´e Janson de Sailly in Paris. He began law school in 1911, but in 1915, he was hit by the double blow of the death of his two elder brothers, Oscar and Georges, on the front lines of World War I and that of his father who committed suicide. In 1928, he lost his mother who had been in a Swiss asylum for several years. From 1920-1925 he traveled and visited the world. In Venice he met the cosmopolitan society that gathered around Stravinsky and Diaghilev. Eugenia Erra´zuriz revealed to him the beauty of 18th century styles and her own modern, minimalist esthetic, and he became her disciple, circa 1927.

Vienna Little Armchair, Contemporary Design Inspired by Straw Traditional Chairs

Vienna is an extraordinarily comfortable and elegant armchair designed by Emmanuel Gallina who loves to quote Brancusi when saying that “simplicity is complexity resolved”. Inspired to the 50’s of Marcel Gascoin, but also to Vienna at the end of the 19th century. A tribute to Alfred Sloan’s American pragmatism joined to European styling and, in this particular case, to the renowned Italian talent constantly aiming to harmonize beauty and functionality.
In solid beech and straw, Vienna is a perfect combination between digital machines and handcraft. The structure is in solid beech. The back is in hand-braided Vienna straw fixed in a milling. The padded seat is upholstered and lined in different fabric categories: cotton, felt, linen, eco-leather, wool, velvet or can be coated with C.O.M. fabric. It is part of Yankatu's Alma-Raiz collection. To create them Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros researched the Brazilian traditions and made innumerous immersions in the riverside community of Urucureá, on the banks of the Arapiuns River and surrounded by the Amazon Forest.
The Alma-Raiz Collection is born from the deepening plunge of the designer Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros into Brazilian identity.
As all the pieces produced by Yankatu, it is accompanied by its soul, a certificate of authenticity in the form of a small book that tells about the inspiration that gave birth to it and leaves blank pages so that its story can continue to be told by those who acquire it, turning it into something more, which does not change with fashion, which does not go by with time. To the contrary, it will move on from a generation to another, from hand to hand, each time with more stories to tell, each time incorporating the lives shared by it.
The wood comes from nature, each one is unique, with its veins, knots and tones. Because it is a natural material it suffers with the climate change, so cracks and shifts in color may emerge over time. The wood can also warp sometimes due to a large variation in relative humidity of the air. Naturally dyed straw has unique characteristics that never repeats itself. Due to this process, colors fade more easily than industrial ones. This isn’t considered a defect, on the contrary it is considered normal, as a way of telling its own story. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
