What could the design of a storage cabinet be like today? This is the question DriadeLab, Driade’s observatory on contemporary lifestyles, asked itself when it started to research into this project. The result was Ziqqurat:a cabinet made up of different boxes that can be piled up to create everchanging forms. This system, constructive in all respects, can be used to create arrangements of three different sizes depending on the space available.The project’s source of inspiration, ancient sumerian pyramids, is no random choice: it is such a strong theme that it even gave its name to the cabinet. In 2020 Driade, the aesthetic laboratory par excellence, proposed an expansion of the Ziqqurat collection in the iconic patterns: romantic in the floral version with tassels or pop in the white and black geometric version with black handle. This beautiful two door cabinet is made from Solid pine, laminate and veneered lacquered panels. The top is made from a anthracite laminate and is framed by a solid pine wooden rim. By manipulating wood grain patterns, Strata captures an expression in between the organic and the man-made. The surface consists of tangential layers of oak, veneered at an angle on top of each other, and carefully sanded down into a pattern inspired by the veining of sedimentary rock. The combination of wood grain patterns and stone vein formations creates a mesmerizing texture that draws the mind toward root or burl wood, yet is distinctly different through its repetition and distortion. The technique developed has its roots in conventional intarsia inlay, but in order to find an expression more organic and naturally occurring, the graphical nature of cut-out veneering has been replaced by an extensive process of sanding down transitions between overlapping veneers. Continuing the approach of interpreted nature; all angles, shapes, and proportions of the cabinet relate to pi and the golden ratio. The subsurface of Strata is prepared to compensate for the irregularities caused by the sanding, resulting in a perfectly flush surface. The cabinet is finished with a glossy lacquer and a wax coating. SNICKERIET is a furniture studio with an explorative approach to traditional woodworking craft and philosophy.
