CHINOISERIE STYLE

Emerging in the 17th century, chinoiserie appropriated the aesthetics and imagery of popular East Asian design for European-made versions. Reflecting the exoticization of China, Japan and other countries in this era, the word directly translates from French to “Chinese-esque,” which reveals its shortcomings as a style of furniture and decor that often stereotypically and reductively mimics Asian culture rather than showcasing and paying tribute to its artistic traditions.

The enthusiastically decorative chinoiserie style was propelled by influential tastemakers including French King Louis XIV, whose Trianon de Porcelaine in 1670 was inspired by Chinese architecture. Expanded trade between the East and West led to a demand for porcelain, lacquer objects, silk and other goods, which further informed the fanciful furniture being crafted in Europe.

Artisans working in the chinoiserie style used materials and elements like pagoda shapes, bamboo, lacquer surfaces, bird and flower motifs and other interpretations of Asian design on pieces that were frequently set against vibrant wallcoverings. This whimsical approach yielded chinoiserie furniture that boasted dramatic flourishes drawing on the natural world and reflected the dominance of Rococo during the 18th century.

As chinoiserie was shaped by approximations of Asian design by European creators, it had regional variations, such as Chinese Chippendale in England where cabinets, chairs and tea tables had wooden fretwork designs and “japanned” surfaces intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia. In North America, furniture makers in Boston and New York integrated chinoiserie-painted scenes into Queen Anne furniture.

Antique chinoiserie furniture has continued to be fashionable, from its popularity with decorators of the Hollywood Regency era — James Mont, Tommi Parzinger, William Haines and Samuel Marx favored the style — to contemporary interior designers, although it brings with it a complex history.

Silk embroidery depicting two guardian lions, framed in a gilt frame, 19th century. An elegant, hand-embroidered silk piece depicting two Foo lions (or imperial guardian dogs) surrounding a symbolic central medallion. Executed with exquisite detail in cream, blue, brown, and beige tones, this circular composition exemplifies the refinement of Asian-inspired textile arts from the late 19th century. The richness of the embroidery stitches highlights the details of the mythological creatures as well as the stylized clouds that encircle them. Presented under glass in a circular gilt frame with a turquoise blue mat, the work is displayed with particular elegance. At the crossroads of Oriental influences and the European taste for the exotic, this decorative piece is a beautiful collector's item for enthusiasts of textile art, Orientalism, and antique decoration. Antique European Papier Mâché Tray, Hand-Painted Japonaiserie Scene, circa 1870
Antique European Papier Mâché Tray, Hand-Painted Japonaiserie Scene, circa 1870

Antique European Papier Mâché Tray, Hand-Painted Japonaiserie Scene, circa 1870

Located in COLMAR, FR

A charming and atmospheric small antique papier mâché tray, hand-painted in the Japonaiserie taste that swept through European decorative arts following the landmark Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867. Sourced in Alsace (France) — a region at the cultural crossroads of France and Germany — this intimate rectangular tray carries all the hallmarks of quality late 19th century lacquerwork: a deep black ground, delicate gilt detailing and a richly observed polychrome scene painted with evident skill and affection. The composition is alive with telling detail: a sword-carrying man in a floral kimono walks with a child — who pushes a toy rabbit on a wheeled stick — and a small dog along a waterside path, a cherry blossom tree arching overhead, while boats laden with figures cross a river toward a distant pavilion set among hills and pines. Ducks rest in the reeds below. The presence of a male protagonist is a rarity in European Japonaiserie of this period, which typically favored female figures — a samurai, sword at his side, watching his child's wheeled rabbit toy...
