Gothic Revival Furniture

Gothic Revival Style

The Gothic Revival movement (also called Victorian Gothic or Neo-Gothic) emerged in Britain in the 1740s, and reached its height in the late-19th century. Gothic Revival furniture's characteristics include such decorative flourishes as pointed arches, floral details, finials, heraldic motifs and linenfold carving.

The movement was rooted in religious and social conservatism. Gothic Revival's proponents, who included Charles Barry and A.W.N. Pugin, the architects of London’s Houses of Parliament (designed in 1840), believed that the art and architecture of the Middle Ages were authentically spiritual and inherently moral.

In the United States, the Gothic Revival movement shaped both public buildings and private houses. Numerous American schools were built in the early-19th century in a style now called Collegiate Gothic. Many builders and craftsmen were inspired by Andrew Jackson Downing’s widely read 1850 book Architecture for Country Houses, which posited that a family’s home should exemplify their values — and that the Gothic Revival style was particularly well-suited to scholars and clergymen. Furniture with detailing that mirrored that of Gothic Revival buildings appeared in the same period. Such pieces typically feature dark, intricately carved wood, and upholstery in velvet or leather.

Much like the castles or cathedrals that inspired them, Gothic Revival chairs, bookcases and beds make a bold design statement. And while you probably don’t have to cross a moat or raise a portcullis to get through your front door, a Gothic Revival piece will declare that your home is indeed your castle.

Antique Bronze Religious Art Sculpture / Statue Depicting Christ with Children
Located in Lisse, NL
19th century finest bronze group statue. This excellent quality and very refined sculpture of Christ with children is another one of our recent great finds. Anyone who knows what it takes to create a bronze sculpture from start to finish realizes how special these works of art really are. For us to have found this rare, antique specimen more than made our day. Firstly, because we love the subject matter and secondly, because antique bronzes always are the best when it comes to the details and the patina. Both the serenity in Jesus' face and the way His cloth is perfectly draped around His sitting body are details that never fail to impress. The angelic faces of the two children who are clearly enjoying to be in His presence, make this meaningful and striking sculpture even more pleasant to look at. This handcrafted and antique work of beauty simply warms your heart and it will look marvelous, no matter where you decide to have it on display. Our price for this work of religious art...

Large and Extensively Carved Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival Cabinet
Located in Morristown, NJ
Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival cabinet, with interior shelf and central door. Heavily adorned with carved panels to front and sides. The front is comprised of panels flanking a central door. To each side of the door are two beautifully carved panels. The door has brass hinges and escutcheon. It locks with the key retained. The carving is mirrored on both sides of the piece, each comprising five carved panels. The red undertones suggest that this is a chestnut rather than an oak piece. The overall structure owes much to the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century France, with a nod to Renaissance Revival. The door panel is dominated by a lovely example of Gothic tracery in the form of a half moon “window...

Mid-19th Century Gothic Revival English Walnut Reclining Arm Chair
Located in Chicago, IL
Invented Circa 1850, the precursor to the modern recliner was initially designed for its versatility: early models could serve as a chair, a bed, and a chaise lounge. This innovation quickly gained popularity for combining comfort with luxury. Napoleon III, the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte and Emperor of the French, reportedly owned one of the first recliners. This model, constructed in neighboring England during the same era, may even resemble the French monarch’s reclinable chair. Intended for an English drawing room or parlor, this beautiful piece features elegant jacquard upholstery and turned legs. The backrest can extend almost one-hundred-eight degrees from an upright position, facilitated by a graceful manual mechanism similar to the ratcheting recline...
