Native American Furniture

NATIVE AMERICAN STYLE

Native American broadly describes any Indigenous people in North America and encompasses hundreds of tribes and groups, all with distinct cultures. Native American–style furniture and decor likewise varies widely, from pieces created by Indigenous people to those appropriated by non-native designers.

Indigenous furniture’s rich heritage includes the bentwood boxes of the Northwest Coast carved from cedar for storing household or ceremonial objects. Generations of Native American people have made baskets for holding household items, with those in the Northeast using sweetgrass and those in the Southeast using pine needles and wicker. Artisans in the Plateau region wove watertight pieces like cradles from plant materials. Although these objects were intricately made, they were usually utilitarian rather than decorative.

The colonization of North America and the removal of Indigenous people from their lands led to the suppression of these practices. Many styles that used Native American motifs — such as Southwestern style, which was heavily influenced by the geometric patterns of Navajo textiles — have historically not involved Indigenous creators and, instead, have taken their traditions without their tribal context.

When decorating a home with Native American–style furniture, it is important to do so respectfully, by understanding the origins of motifs and objects and examining who profits from their sale. There are now Indigenous-led companies, such as Cherokee designer Cray Bauxmont-Flynn’s Amatoya and Totem House Design, promoting Indigenous work in furniture and home decor. Supporting Indigenous artists and artisans is essential to confronting the still pervasive issue of cultural appropriation in design.

1930s Skookum Native American Dolls Mix Match Set of 4
Located in Van Nuys, CA
The history of Skookum dolls starts with Mary McAboy filing two applications for patents for a doll or toy figure on November 29, 1913. After the popularity rose in 1920, They were factory-made dolls from the 1920s-1960s that resembled Native American people and were usually sold in tourist spots The word Skookum originated from the Chinook or Siwash traders of the American Northwest and has a few meanings. The main one attributed to the Skookum doll is Bully Good! In this rare set, there are 4 Native American depicted dolls, 3 skookum, and one male figurine with an unknown background. These skookum dolls are suspected of being created in the early 1930s. 1- Figure of a woman and her baby on her back, with a wrapped blanket, flowered pants, and beaded mocassins 14in X 7in 1- A male figure wrapped/ clothed in fringed hide clothing. Monumental Makah TOTEM by Young Doctor 108"H
Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
Makah TOTEM by Young Doctor (1851-1934). Neah Bay, Washington. This monumental pole is a significant piece of Northwest Coast art and Seattle history that was previously owned by Joseph Edward “Daddy” Standley, the founder of the iconic Ye Olde Curiosity Shop in Seattle, Washington. The pole was displayed for years on the grounds of Standley’s “TOTEM Place” estate in West Seattle, across the bay from his iconic ethnographic art and curio shop on the Seattle Waterfront. So popular amongst tourists was the TOTEM Place estate grounds, that the Southwest Seattle Historical Society has stated that “for decades... it was a place where tour buses stopped, and flashbulbs popped. It probably was the most gawked-at, talked-about residence in West Seattle.” This pole was even featured in situ at Standley’s West Seattle home on a postcard that was sold to visitors through Ye Olde Curiosity Shop. While there are multitudes of model poles and other artifacts available to collectors that were sold as souvenirs from Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, objects that were actually owned by Standley are virtually unknown in the art market. The vast majority of objects that Standley esteemed and considered his private collection have remained with his family and descendants and are on permanent display in the store. Among the objects owned by Standley to make their way into the Smithsonian was a Spirit Canoe sculpture by Makah master carver Young Doctor (1851-1934), the likely carver of this pole. It would appear that Standley and Young Doctor had a good working relationship as a number of pieces, including this TOTEM, an elaborate transformation mask, the aforementioned Spirit Canoe model at NMAI, and a full model set of a Makah whaling crew and canoe were made for Standley by the artist. This large-scale TOTEM pole is an exceptional example of turn-of-the-20th-century Northwest Coast carving...

Antique Native American Indian Teec Nos Pos Navajo-Style Rug Textile
Located in Dallas, TX
78662 Small Square Antique Teec Nos Pos Navajo Rug, 02'00 x 02'00. Behold the modern desert elegance of the Southwest, marrying the nomadic charm of Native American culture in this small handwoven wool antique Teec Nos Pos Navajo rug. This enchanted Navajo rug weaves together the geometric patterns of the Native American spirit with the earthy hues of the desert, forming a beguiling work of art. The described Teec Nos Pos Navajo rug is a visually striking piece, characterized by its 2 x 2 square dimensions and a vibrant color palette. Central to its design is a stepped cross and diamond motif in the middle, prominently featuring the colors red, gray, and orange. In each of the four corners of the rug, there are concentric squares on a neutral gray backdrop that add to its symmetry and balance. The top left and bottom right corners feature concentric squares in red and golden ochre, while the top right and bottom left corners display squares in purple and golden ochre.
