Native American Furniture

NATIVE AMERICAN STYLE

Native American broadly describes any Indigenous people in North America and encompasses hundreds of tribes and groups, all with distinct cultures. Native American–style furniture and decor likewise varies widely, from pieces created by Indigenous people to those appropriated by non-native designers.

Indigenous furniture’s rich heritage includes the bentwood boxes of the Northwest Coast carved from cedar for storing household or ceremonial objects. Generations of Native American people have made baskets for holding household items, with those in the Northeast using sweetgrass and those in the Southeast using pine needles and wicker. Artisans in the Plateau region wove watertight pieces like cradles from plant materials. Although these objects were intricately made, they were usually utilitarian rather than decorative.

The colonization of North America and the removal of Indigenous people from their lands led to the suppression of these practices. Many styles that used Native American motifs — such as Southwestern style, which was heavily influenced by the geometric patterns of Navajo textiles — have historically not involved Indigenous creators and, instead, have taken their traditions without their tribal context.

When decorating a home with Native American–style furniture, it is important to do so respectfully, by understanding the origins of motifs and objects and examining who profits from their sale. There are now Indigenous-led companies, such as Cherokee designer Cray Bauxmont-Flynn’s Amatoya and Totem House Design, promoting Indigenous work in furniture and home decor. Supporting Indigenous artists and artisans is essential to confronting the still pervasive issue of cultural appropriation in design.

Step into the serene embrace of Native American design aesthetics, where the elegance of Contemporary Santa Fe seamlessly intertwines with the fusion of Southwestern and Desert Modern styles in this meticulously handwoven Southwestern style rug. Rooted in history, the Storm Pattern, originating between 1897 and 1911 at the Crystal Trading Post, captures the essence of rainstorms with its central rectangle, diagonal lightning bolts, and zig-zag lines—a vibrant tribute to the growing season. Within this remarkable Southwestern style rug, the interplay of contemporary Santa Fe elements and Southwestern eclecticism unfolds with captivating charm. Adorned in organic earthy tones, it weaves a narrative of warmth and sophistication against a richly abrashed brown taupe backdrop. Radiating from the center are four concave hexagons in beige forming a cross motif, complemented by beige chevron bands and small hourglass motifs that enhance the geometric harmony. At each corner, four large-scale red and beige striped geometric shapes command attention, adding focal intrigue. Framed by a sleek black border, this flatweave Southwestern style rug achieves a refined contemporary allure, seamlessly merging the comforting warmth of Desert Modern interior design with the quintessential Southwestern style. Multi-Figure 7 Foot Nuu-chah-nulth TOTEM

By Native American Art

Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID

This large pole was “donated to a church on the northern tip of Vancouver Island for a fundraiser” sometime around 1905. The pole is carved in a folk-art style that is correct for the period. The imagery on this pole is quite fascinating and includes a large bird whose wings form the face of a composite creature holding what appears to be a whale or fish. Below that is what appears to be a Sisiutl, or three-headed sea serpent. Under the Sisiutl is a pair of animal heads flanking the pole, perhaps wolves, over a colonial bald eagle. This pole is a large and early Nuu-chah-nulth totem carving...
