Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

Extraordinary Polychrome Paint Decorated Venetian Rococo Bombe Commode C1870
Located in Swedesboro, NJ
This extraordinary Venetian Rococo bombe commode, dating to circa 1870, is a true masterpiece of Italian decorative arts. Lavishly polychrome paint decorated, the commode features a beautifully aged palette of soft aquamarine, cream, and gilt highlights, adorned with exquisite hand-painted floral motifs across its bombe-shaped drawers, sides, and top. The graceful Rococo form, with its curvaceous silhouette and cabriole legs, perfectly captures the opulence and romance of 18th-century Venetian design while showcasing the artistry of 19th-century craftsmanship. The commode’s three spacious bombe drawers are richly detailed with scrolling gilt accents and ornate hardware, providing both elegance and practicality. The top surface is equally striking, featuring a central floral bouquet framed with scrolling cartouches, making this piece a stunning focal point in any room. Its distressed patina enhances its authenticity, reflecting over a century of refined European taste and charm. Ideal for a collector of antique Venetian...

Late 19th Century French Aubusson Tapestry Cushion with Rococo Style
Located in Dallas, TX
79199 Late 19th Century Antique French Aubusson Tapestry Cushion, 01'09 x 01'06 x 00'06. Woven with whispers of bygone grandeur, this handwoven wool French Aubusson tapestry cushion from the Late 19th Century captures the lyrical heart of a pastoral fable, rendered in threads of gentle nostalgia and refined artistry. At its center, a fox gazes longingly upward toward a pair of birds perched delicately on a tree branch, evoking the timeless tale of La Fontaine’s The Fox and the Crow—a moral parable spun into the language of tapestry. The scene is framed by a lush wreath of scrolling acanthus leaves and voluptuous blossoms—roses, peonies, and wildflowers—blooming in softened tones of pink, ochre, and antique gold. Each carefully handwoven detail reveals the elegant precision of the Aubusson weaver’s loom, where every knot and weft captures a painterly sensitivity to light, form, and emotion. The background shimmers with subtle gradations of mossy green and parchment beige, conjuring the feel of a sun-dappled glade, while the figures themselves seem to pause in narrative stillness—caught in a moment of wit, desire, and the age-old dance of cunning and vanity. The Aubusson pillow becomes a miniature stage for moral reflection, set within the poetic landscape of 19th-century French salon decor. Beneath the pastoral charm lies the hallmark of the Aubusson tradition: a low-warp tapestry technique prized for its fine execution and seamless color transitions. This cushion, originally born of a larger wall tapestry fragment, has been lovingly preserved and reimagined with a sumptuous velvet backing—ensuring the legacy of the weaver’s hand continues to offer comfort and delight. The delicately frayed edges and mellowed palette speak not of wear, but of history—an aged beauty that softens with time, like a well-loved verse recited over generations. More than a decorative object, this antique Aubusson pillow...
