Space Age End Tables

SPACE AGE STYLE

Vintage Space Age furniture captured post–World War II optimism with swooping shapes, bowed lines and experimentation with new materials including plastic and fiberglass.

From the launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957 to the landing of Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon in 1969, the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States propelled advancements in technology that transformed culture. Space Age design encompassed fashion, architecture, cars, furniture and objects for the home, bringing wonder and hope for the future into everyday life.

Coinciding with Pop art, Space Age style featured bold colors and forms. Eero Aarnio’s Ball chair, which debuted in 1966, used molded fiberglass for a capsule-like space while Verner Panton’s 1959 Panton chair was a single piece of molded plastic for a gravity-defying S shape. Red versions of Olivier Mourgue’s 1964 Djinn chair were futuristic enough to appear on the space station in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Today, Joe Colombo is revered as a master of modern Italian design thanks to the provocative modular furniture pieces he created, such as the Tube chair and the Elda armchair, both of which embody the future-forward spirit of the Space Age.

The Space Age spirit extended to home building too. The futuristic Case Study Houses, which were designed by the likes of Pierre Koenig, Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra and Whitney R. Smith, are considered a high point of modernism and the Southern California lifestyle.

Sometimes the nods to space exploration were more literal, like moon and star motifs or the 1965 Eclisse lamp by Vico Magistretti that saw the mid-century Italian designer integrating a movable inner shade to “eclipse” the light source. Alongside the pioneering moon missions, JVC manufactured the Videosphere portable television reminiscent of the Apollo 11 space helmets.

Although the style faded in the 1970s — with the 1975 joining of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts signaling a new era of cooperation and the global oil crisis impacting the availability of plastics — the era’s innovations influenced designers into the 21st century such as Zaha Hadid and Djivan Schapira.

Pair of Raymond Loewy Inspired Green Chapter One Nightstands by Broyhill Premier
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Why are the green drawer fronts different tones? Good question. Nightstand "B" was acquired singularly over two years ago and we vowed to wait patiently until a mate turned up. And yes, we're fanatical about Chapter One. Finally one did, but "Nightstand A" was probably close to a window for many decades and the sun faded the green plastic just a touch. The difference is only slightly noticeable, especially when considering that both nightstands were fully re-painted in white lacquer, so they're a perfect match otherwise. Now that you know the exciting backstory, here are the details......... Well it’s 2022, and Broyhill’s Chapter One Collection is officially harder to find and more sought after than the Raymond Loewy orginals. With all due respect to Raymond Loewy, there really is something magical about the Chapter One line. Maybe they’re just more fun and approachable. Maybe it’s the proportions and practicality. Regardless, they’re one of our favourite collections of all time. The restoration team pulled no punches on these nightstands, and the end result exceeded our expectations. Every inch of the wood bodies and bases were professionally sanded, primed and painted to match the original bright white. The laminate top and dark lime green molded plastic drawer fronts were finally buffed and polished to a glassy shine. It’s tough to see these go, but we know they will be loved. Broyhill’s Chapter one collection borrowed from the plastic mold injection designs made famous by legendary designer Raymond Loewy. Like Loewy, this Chapter One Green Dresser employs the futuristic use of color and materials in a way that had not been seen before. The bright green plastic captures the playful spirit of the 1970s. Each cabinet is supported by a white lacquered, curved plinth base that compliments the overall form of the nightstands. Two wide drawers roll-out on metal glides that have been adjusted and oiled to allow for easy functionality, and proper spacing. These colorful, curvaceous commodes could have blended in nicely on the set of 2001 A Space Odyssey. The space-age look has never been more desirable, which may help explain the recent scarcity of all things Chapter One. Chapter One green nightstands...
