This beautiful and elegant free-form table by German sculptor Knut Hesterberg was produced by the German company, Ronald Schmidt, in very small numbers during the short period of 1974-1975 and so is very rarely seen on the market. The sculptural base is made of pressure die cast aluminium. This design is published as Figure 30 in Belloli's monograph on Hesterberg's work entitled "Knut Hesterberg, Skulptur and design" by Carlo Belloli, Milan, Italy which was published in 1983. A copy of the original page documenting this table will be provided to the buyer. (please see image 4). Knut Hesterberg is a world famous German sculptor who started his career at the graphic arts and design studio in Zurich, Switzerland where he came into contact with the architect and artist Max Bill who had a great influence on his future work. He has exhibited his sculptures all over Europe and many of his large scale sculptures are permanently installed in public spaces throughout Germany and a few in Italy (please see image 10 for an example) . In the late 1960s he was asked to design a series of limited production sculptural form tables...

This original 18th century Baroque console table stands out for its finely carved gilt wood details. It is the perfect little eye catcher for a smaller entryway. It shows the typical features of the 17th-18th century baroque design vocabulary. Consequently acanthus leaves and scrollwork embellish its otherwise symmetrical structure. It comes in original condition with the expected wear and tear and some retouches from earlier restorations and measures H 29.53 x W 25.99 x D 13.78 inches (H 75 cm x W 66 cm x D 35 cm). During the 17th century, the Baroque style had a marked effect upon furniture design throughout western Europe. Large wardrobes, cupboards, and cabinets had twisted columns, broken pediments, and heavy moldings. The Baroque style was adopted in the Low Countries in the 1620s and extended late into the 17th century, when Germany and England began to develop it. In southern Germany the French influence on furniture design was more prominent than in the western or northern parts, where Dutch and English styles were predominant.
